Our beautiful creek side property was purchased for family enjoyment. We are greatful to be able to share it with our daughters, their husbands, and our 8 grandchildren and now, through the rental cabins, with others. Our goal is to keep it as natural as possible, providing a legacy of enjoying the out of doors for our family. If you need more space we have an adjacent cottage that sleeps 8.
Dayle Smith purchased this cabin in 2001
All we could think about when we saw it is 'what a beautiful, healthy, safe place to be a child'....just drive into the driveway and all the distractions of the world go away.
This property has given us a 'both/and' experience. We are away, in a quiet, natural setting, yet we are only 10 miles from the enchanting town of West Jefferson and 40 miles from Boone.
The benefits of being right on the creek are too numerous to mention! The sounds, the fishing, the kayaking/rafting, and just the watching of all the birds, deer, and other critters is more entertainment than we can almost take in!
Our family of six thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend stay at the creek side cabin. We have two college students as well as an eleven and ten year old. We all enjoyed hiking by the beautiful creek, fishing, skimming rocks, relaxing with the picturesque view, nightly campfires with smores, the wildlife (daily visits by the deer to Mr Dayle's corn pile) and the kids especially loved riding mountain bikes down the hills on the beautiful property. We visited Grayson Highlands State Park and downtown West Jefferson. We enjoyed the Ashe County Cheese Factory and The Honey Hole shoppe. We had lunch at The Park Vista Inn restaurant and highly recommend it. Although we did visit those places, what we enjoyed most was the peace and tranquility of the property as well as the hospitality of the caretakers, Mr Dayle and Mrs Linda. The cabin had everything you could possibly need and more. We have stayed at many different places in the NC mountains but none have compared to this. The attention to detail is amazing. We are already planning a return trip in the summer and have shared the info with all of our friends. Thank you for sharing your little piece of Heaven on earth with us!
We stayed at the cabin for two nights in mid-July, our first visit to the property but surely not our last. We love vacation rentals for quick escapes and are always on the lookout for the perfect combination of lodging, land and activities. This place absolutely checked all of the boxes (and is a steal at the price; others would certainly charge far more for far less). The cabin was cozy, clean and well-stocked; the setting was postcard-perfect with lots of room to run and explore; and West Jefferson and Grayson Highlands State Park are both just a short drive away.
We spent our first afternoon playing in the river. There is a separate shed on the property, just packed with equipment for guest use. We borrowed water tubes and had our eye on the kayaks too! In the evening, we made s’mores by the campfire. On the second day, we drove to Grayson Highlands for a hike. We could have easily spent more time at the park, but we wanted to get back to our secluded cabin and creek for the afternoon. Instead of tubing again, we borrowed nets from the shed and let our four-year-old play in the shallows. She loved to catch minnows and crawfish, and was generally the happiest kid ever in the water. Given her age and swimming ability, we held her hand or carried her in some parts. But there were also little side banks along the creek where the water was much slower, and we were able to let her play on her own in those spots without any trouble at all. Older or more confident swimmers would surely find even more to explore! There is also another, larger rental on the property, but it was unoccupied during our visit. However, there seems like plenty of space, chairs, fire pits and creek to go around, even if another family is nearby. The days were hot during our stay, and the cabin is not air-conditioned. But the cabin has plenty of fans for the windows, and the evenings and nights cooled us down completely.
This cabin/property really seems like a labor of love for the caretakers and owners. They’ve put a lot of attention and resources into the place to ensure the comfort of their guests, and it shows. It was a really memorable vacation, and we can't wait to go back!
We just returned from a week in this lovely place and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. WE enjoyed fishing and caught plenty. We didn't venture out too much because it was so nice there at the cabin. The dogs especially the small one loved the mountain stream and thought she had to go get in it everyday! I highly recommend this place. Dale and Linda are wonderful people and make you feel right at home. Have already booked my stay for next year but also hope to go back up again in September or October and take my grandson!
I recently took my teenage son and two of his fishing buddies for a two-night stay and found this cabin and valley to be outstanding. We have fished Helton Creek many times but wanted a place to stay a few nights without making it just a day-trip. My son and his friends are avid fly-fishermen and were in the water nearly all day catching trout. Without a worry about the boy's safety, I was able to fish, relax, roam the property, cook, sit on the porch, sit by a great fire on the creek and soak in the beauty of this valley. Linda and Dale made us feel like family and we promised them they would be seeing a lot of us in the future. I felt like I was at home and the boys are still talking about the trip.
We really enjoyed our stay at this cabin on the creek. The atmosphere is very relaxing, private, and scenic. We were made to feel welcome and at home by the manager, Mr. Smith, when we arrived. The cabin is very well designed and decorated and had all that we needed, and then some. We explored the creek, sat in the rockers on the front porch in the mornings and evenings taking in the scenery, and had a great time fishing. We truly enjoyed our entire stay and would definitely recommend this location to anyone.
We just returned from a weekend get away to this amazing cabin! I always read reviews about vacation spots before choosing, but seldom write them myself, but after a relaxing weekend of peace and tranquility I had to do so. I have fished Helton Creek many times and love the area, so when I seen this cabin I couldn't wait to stay. My wife and I were joined by her sister and boyfriend, and each of us wished we had another week to enjoy this piece of heaven. The cabin is beautiful and has everything you need to enjoy your stay. The pictures don't do it justice, its even prettier in person, all you need to bring is food. As others have said the caretakers (Dayle and Linda) are so nice and will make sure you have great visit. You feel like your part of their family. We enjoyed grilling out and campfires by the creek, when we weren't just sitting on the porch listening to nothing but nature.
The fishing, Wow! Dayle had told me if I didn't catch at least 30 trout while I was there I needed to change flies. Well I didn't catch 30.....I lost count at 50!!! I have fished in many different areas of the country and this was as good as it gets for catching big trout, you will be spoiled after fishing here!
We are already planning our next stay later this year.
I would definitely recommend this cabin to anyone who wants a quite relaxing get away yet close enough to town with many other activities.
The cabin is located on one of North Carolina's primier trout streams and the owner routinely stocks the water in addition to the state stocking program. Located on a dead end with only three other cabins on the 6 plus acres this is an ideal seculded get away yet only 300 yards back to a paved state road. The property has open grass
areas for games and biking riding on the local gravel roads with little traffic. An outdoor fireplace with wood provided is a great gathering place down by the creek. Local canoe outfitters can provide services for canoeing or tubing the New River. The historic town of West Jefferson is located just 10 minutes away with all the necessary services, grocery stores, restaurants and liquor store. For those who want a break from the pease and quiet the townes of Boone and Blowing Rock are 45 mintures away on good roads. These locations provide great outlet shopping, snow skiing, and dinning options. To the north one will find Grayson Highlands National Park with great hiking options and the Virginia Creeper Bike Trail, one of the highlights of the ares.
