As our reviews reflect, we work hard to make the cottage clean, inviting and a place to make lifetime memories. Whether you are traveling with several family members, a group of friends, or only a couple - we know that you will find relaxation on the big porch rocking chairs or around the fire pit. Special visits from the farm dogs and red hens that free-range the farm are a real treat. There is just something so amazingly peaceful about watching the hens and cattle going about their leisurely lives of grazing and resting. The property has plenty of room to toss a ball or frisbee; play flashlight tag, chase fireflies or catch snowflakes on your tongue. There is a cornhole board and bags set and board games for inside. We have decorated the cottage in an inviting, comfortable country theme. There are books and inside toys for the children to enjoy (if you can ever get them inside).
The kitchen offers everything needed for your stay. With two separate round tables and bar stools, you can all enjoy a sit-down meal in the house - or a picnic style meal in the pole barn which is lighted with strings of clear lights.
The master bedroom has a queen sleigh bed, large walk in closet and a full bath. The south bedroom has a queen sleigh bed and a twin bed with antique dresser. The north bedroom has a brass, full bed and a twin bed with beautiful views of the rose garden and hay barn. The south and north bedrooms share a full bath and walk in closet. The living room has TV with cable and DVD, game chest, seating for 10 and lots of floor space to play games. There is also a game table in the living room. The kitchen/dining room is very spacious with beautiful oak table/chairs and an island with bar stool seating. The kitchen is fully furnished with stove, oven, side-by-side refrigerator with ice/water dispenser, dishwasher, microwave, coffeepot, blender, dishes and cookware.
Our names are Steve and Tammy Henderson. We live and raise cattle, chickens (for eggs), apples and a garden on this 40 acre farm. Steve also works away from the farm, but we enjoy being here for most of our spare time. Since offering out the rental cottage, we have been blessed to meet many wonderful people from states near and far. We certainly enjoy giving tours and welcoming our guests with gifts such as apple butter or eggs from the farm.
Tammy Henderson purchased this cottage in 2011
This farm was originally owned by Tammy's parents. We built our house here shortly after we married and have lived here for almost 31 years. The location has been very convenient to schools and jobs, yet offers a peaceful retreat from the hectic city life.
Guests to our cottage most always comment on the wonderful front porch, 8 ft x 50 ft with 10 rocking chairs. The fresh mountain air and peacefulness seems to melt the stress out of your body and put a smile on your face. Sunsets are beautiful from the porch or the pavilion out back. We have a barn-wood pavilion out back where families can spend evenings under twinkling lights and play corn-hole or other games or enjoy a picnic. One of my favorite places in the cottage is standing at the kitchen window looking out at the big red hay barn. There are often cattle, chickens and guineas in the pasture by the barn.
We stayed here last year and were very happy. Sadly couldn't make it this year. Tammy was great to work with dealing with our last minute change.
Everything you need before an Ironman Race- peace and tranquility, took me to my zen place.
Our family of four (two adults, one 1 year old, and one 3 year old) plus one set of grandparents for part of the week had a wonderful time at the Big Porch Cottage. Tammy and Steve were wonderful hosts - very helpful and concerned about our comfort but not intrusive at all. The cottage is in a perfect location as it is out in the country, yet most activities (zoo, Rock City, parks, aquarium, kayaking/canoeing, hiking, children's museum, great restaurants) are only a short and very enjoyable 15-20 minute drive away. Our kids were never bored as the cottage was well-stocked with children's toys, books, and activities and we spent a lot of our time outside just enjoying the setting. Visits from the chickens and Bo and Luke (farm dogs) were particularly enjoyable for our children. We loved our time in Chattanooga and Big Porch Cottage and will definitely be back!
We were very pleased that the place was out in the country, but only 15 minutes from Chattanooga. Tammy and Steve were great to meet, very helpful and accommodating. The place was nice, very roomy and homey. We enjoyed looking out at the many stars at night, and the chickens that came by in the morning. One morning while reading on the porch, a humming bird came about 2 feet away from my face and smiled at me. Our family also enjoyed a corn hold tournament in the barn. A hike to Snooper's Rock, not too far from their house to see out over a beautiful ravine, was also a highlight. We also enjoyed Chicamauga Battlefield, walking over Walnut Bridge, eating a moonpie ice cream sandwich at the original moonpie factory, Ruby Falls and Rock City.
We loved our stay! My husband and I took our four kids for a four night stay. The cottage is very clean. We loved feeding the chickens, feeding the cows, playing catch on the property, playing cornhole, rocking on the big porch, and just enjoying family time! The pavilion was a nice little surprise as well! We knew it was there, but the little twinkle lights strung along the ceiling made night time okay fun! Tammy and Steve gave great info for things to do. One of our favorites was Snoopers Rock, not far from the cottage. Big Porch Cottage is a hidden gem, and we are glad we found it!
We had wonderful time at the Big Porch Cottage! We were looking for a clean and quiet place for our family vacation that was close to Chattanooga area attractions, but would give our kids a place to roam and play. This was definitely it! The cottage exceeded our expectations! It was super clean, so having our young kids play on the floor with their toys when they were not out in the spacious yard was not a big deal. The cottage is definitely family friendly, as the electrical outlets are covered, there is a high chair that attaches to a dining room chair, and there are numerous items for the kids to play with such as a play kitchen, balls, corn hole game, and toy barn. We enjoyed seeing the cows with their calves graze in the field, chickens come by each morning for a visit, and the two dogs. The property was so peaceful and relaxing! We will definitely be back again! The owners, Tammy and Steve, are extremely friendly and wanted to make sure our stay was perfect! We would recommend this property to anyone wanting to get away from it all, but yet be close to it all at the same time. If you are looking to have a quiet place to relax after a day of sight-seeing, this is it!
Our cottage is located in a convenient location to all the activities of Chattanooga, but also on a rural mountain-top farm. To the west is the beautiful Sequatchie Valley in Marion County, TN with a small airport in Jasper, TN; Nickajack Lake in Jasper; the Children's Holocaust Museum in Whitwell, TN; the Dunlap Coke Oven Museum, in Dunlap, TN and many craft fairs and local events such as Ketner's Mill, the National Cornbread Festival, etc.
Chattanooga offers something for everyone of all ages: the Children's Discovery Museum, Tennessee Aquarium, Imax Theatre, Chickamauga National Battlefield, Ghost Tours, Coolidge Park, Chattanooga Zoo, Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park, Chattanooga Theatre, UTC Mocs sporting events, Chattanooga Lookouts baseball, the Riverbend Music Festival in June, RiverRocks events in October and the list goes on.
If your family enjoys retreating to a quiet, home-like setting after a full day of activities, our cottage can offer that family-centered atmosphere you want. There is approximately 3 acres of yard with room to play ball, bean-bag toss, swing, fish in the pond, sit around the fire pit or relax in the rocking chairs on the 50 ft front porch. You could spend your entire vacation just being relaxed and doing family things and never leave the property.
Another wonderful opportunity awaits just outside the property. We are adjacent to a state forest, Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. There are 23,000 acres of forest with abundant wildlife (deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbits, birds) and miles and miles of roads and hiking trails leading to wonderful areas overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge or the beautiful Sequatchie Valley.
Your family will find much to do and will want to come again to have more time for other activities.
