Overview

About the property

The cottage is 1600 sq ft with a rocking chair front porch - 3 large bedrooms

As our reviews reflect, we work hard to make the cottage clean, inviting and a place to make lifetime memories. Whether you are traveling with several family members, a group of friends, or only a couple - we know that you will find relaxation on the big porch rocking chairs or around the fire pit. Special visits from the farm dogs and red hens that free-range the farm are a real treat. There is just something so amazingly peaceful about watching the hens and cattle going about their leisurely lives of grazing and resting. The property has plenty of room to toss a ball or frisbee; play flashlight tag, chase fireflies or catch snowflakes on your tongue. There is a cornhole board and bags set and board games for inside. We have decorated the cottage in an inviting, comfortable country theme. There are books and inside toys for the children to enjoy (if you can ever get them inside).

The kitchen offers everything needed for your stay. With two separate round tables and bar stools, you can all enjoy a sit-down meal in the house - or a picnic style meal in the pole barn which is lighted with strings of clear lights.

The master bedroom has a queen sleigh bed, large walk in closet and a full bath. The south bedroom has a queen sleigh bed and a twin bed with antique dresser. The north bedroom has a unique door-headboard, full bed and a twin bed with beautiful views hay barn. The south and north bedrooms share a full bath and walk in closet. The living room has TV with cable and DVD, game chest, seating for 10 and lots of floor space to play games. There is also a game table in the living room. The kitchen/dining room is very spacious with beautiful oak table/chairs and an island with bar stool seating. The kitchen is fully furnished with stove, oven, side-by-side refrigerator with ice/water dispenser, dishwasher, microwave, coffeepot, blender, dishes and cookware.

About Tammy Henderson

Our names are Steve and Tammy Henderson. We live and raise cattle, chickens (for eggs), apples and a garden on this 40 acre farm. Steve also works away from the farm, but we enjoy being here for most of our spare time. Since offering out the rental cottage, we have been blessed to meet many wonderful people from states near and far. We certainly enjoy giving tours and welcoming our guests with gifts such as apple butter or eggs from the farm.

Tammy Henderson purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Tammy Henderson chose Tennessee

This farm was originally owned by Tammy's parents. We built our house here shortly after we married and have lived here for almost 31 years. The location has been very convenient to schools and jobs, yet offers a peaceful retreat from the hectic city life.

What makes this cottage unique

Guests to our cottage most always comment on the wonderful front porch, 8 ft x 50 ft with 10 rocking chairs. The fresh mountain air and peacefulness seems to melt the stress out of your body and put a smile on your face. Sunsets are beautiful from the porch or the pavilion out back. We have a barn-wood pavilion out back where families can spend evenings under twinkling lights and play corn-hole or other games or enjoy a picnic. One of my favorite places in the cottage is standing at the kitchen window looking out at the big red hay barn. There are often cattle, chickens and guineas in the pasture by the barn.

Exactly as advertised

  • 5 of 5

The Big Porch Cottage was a perfect home for me and a few friends for the better part of a week in June 2017. It was quiet, comfortable and exactly what we wanted and needed.

We spent many hours on the porches relaxing and taking in the sights and sounds of Tennessee. There were farm animals nearby and bunnies, deer and birds in the fields and nearby woods. There was also a family of hawks that kept the rest of the animals on their toes.

if you want peace and quiet, the Big Porch Cottage is your place.

Our second stay was just as good as the first!!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Big Porch Cottage and it did not disappoint! After our first stay in 2016, we knew that we would definitely be coming back and after booking our most recent trip, we had a calendar counting down the days until our arrival :)

Tammy and Steve are the sweetest people and deserve an A++++++ in hospitality. I sent Tammy an email a few months ago after I'd booked this trip and told her how much my 3 year old son loves cows and asked if they had some spare time, if they would mind letting my son learn a little more about their cows. It just happened to work out they have a calf right now that they're bottle feeding and trying to wean to eating "real food" that cows eat. I think they said this is only the 2nd calf they've had to bottle feed and they invited us to come watch them give him a bottle. It was a cool experience for all of my family to see!

The cottage has everything that you could imagine needing, from a booster/high chair seat to bandaids... If there's anything that you might need, they're happy to help. They really do have all of the bases covered though, there wasn't a single time during either of our trips that we didn't have everything that we needed.

In addition to the necessities, there are games, movies, books for everyone as well as toys and books for children, and that's just in the cottage itself. The barn has corn hole games, sidewalk chalk, rocking chairs. It was raining one afternoon and we all sat out on the rocking chairs and swing under the covered porch and enjoyed the tranquility.

The cottage is equipped with cable and WiFi, so you can be as connected as you want to be or take a break from everything. My 9 year old son actually chose to play some "in real life" rather than play games on the computer the whole time like he does at home.

I highly recommend Big Porch Cottage to anyone, you will love it! We look forward to staying again next summer! :)

My husband, 2-year old daughter and I had such a fabulous time at Big Porch Cottage. The property is gorgeous, the enormous wrap around porch is the epitome of relaxation, the cottage had everything we needed and was so clean, there were toys that kept our daughter delighted, and Tammy and Steve couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. We will be back for sure!!

Perfect place to vacation with our grown children

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Big Porch Cottage the minute we arrived. It is spacious and fit our family perfectly. This was our first ever weekend get away with our adult children and their spouses. It is such a relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful spot for pictures. Our "cow" loving daughter was thrilled to see the two newborn calves born the weekend we were there. I wanted to download a picture of her and one of the calves but don't see any way to do that on this review. Tammy and Steve made us feel like family! If we get to take another family vacation to Chattanooga I am definitely renting "Big Porch Cottage" again. P.S. Tammy, thanks for running to your house to get us ketchup so we could have it for our burgers and fries :)

Our cottage is located in a convenient location to all the activities of Chattanooga, but also on a rural mountain-top farm. To the west is the beautiful Sequatchie Valley in Marion County, TN with a small airport in Jasper, TN; Nickajack Lake in Jasper; the Children's Holocaust Museum in Whitwell, TN; the Dunlap Coke Oven Museum, in Dunlap, TN and many craft fairs and local events such as Ketner's Mill, the National Cornbread Festival, etc.

Chattanooga offers something for everyone of all ages: the Children's Discovery Museum, Tennessee Aquarium, Imax Theatre, Chickamauga National Battlefield, Ghost Tours, Coolidge Park, Chattanooga Zoo, Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park, Chattanooga Theatre, UTC Mocs sporting events, Chattanooga Lookouts baseball, the Riverbend Music Festival in June, RiverRocks events in October and the list goes on.

If your family enjoys retreating to a quiet, home-like setting after a full day of activities, our cottage can offer that family-centered atmosphere you want. There is approximately 3 acres of yard with room to play ball, bean-bag toss, swing, fish in the pond, sit around the fire pit or relax in the rocking chairs on the 50 ft front porch. You could spend your entire vacation just being relaxed and doing family things and never leave the property.

Another wonderful opportunity awaits just outside the property. We are adjacent to a state forest, Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. There are 23,000 acres of forest with abundant wildlife (deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbits, birds) and miles and miles of roads and hiking trails leading to wonderful areas overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge or the beautiful Sequatchie Valley.

Your family will find much to do and will want to come again to have more time for other activities.
