About Cynthia Bidwell-owner or owner's daughter Lynne Barker

My name is Cynthia and I was born and grew up in a small village north of Cambridge in England. I have a grown up son and daughter and four grand daughters aged 14, 12 ,4 and a few months. Family is very important to me. My daughter Lynne helps me to manage the Penthouse View apartment. As a family we visit the apartment often and it is very much home from home to us. We have enjoyed making it a comfortable and relaxing retreat and we have made very good friends in Okrug Gornji village.

I have lived in the same village all my life and am very much involved in the community being a member of the Parish Council, a trustee of the local Day Centre for the elderly and a trustee of our Town Lands Charity. I belong to the Gardening Club and the local branch of the British Legion and was Chairman of our Carnival Committee for many years. I am the practice manager at a local GP practice and have worked there for over 40 years.

My roots will always be in my home village but I love to travel and visit other countries. My partner Simon and I spent 5 years building a 36ft yacht and we sailed thousands of miles around the coast of Britain, across the North Sea and eventually down to the Mediterranean Sea where we kept our yacht for many years and sailed all around the Med. Simon is currently building a 50ft steel yacht behind our house so that we can continue our sailing into our retirement days. Having an apartment base on the beautiful Adriatic coast where we can moor our yacht within view of our own balcony and knowing that it will be safe when we are back home in Britain is I think having the best of both worlds.

We are not wealthy and have worked hard to achieve what we have now but have been lucky that we grew up in a time when that was possible. I think things will be tougher for the younger generations.

Cynthia Bidwell-owner or owner's daughter Lynne Barker purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Cynthia Bidwell-owner or owner's daughter Lynne Barker chose Ciovo

We heard from a friend that the apartment block was due to be built by a local builder who they knew well. We visited the area and fell in love with both the island and the site. We stayed locally several times during the build and were impressed with the quality of the work. We were involved in choosing the floor coverings, kitchen and bathroom fittings and other details which have all meant that this is an apartment which is individual to us. We have become friends with the builder Mijo and his wife Bozena and their family. They live in the apartment block next door and they look after our property for us. We know that Penthouse View and our guests are in safe hands.

What makes this apartment unique

The views from this apartment are amazing and we never fail to be moved by the spectacular sunsets from our balcony. I was determined to have a swinging seat on the balcony and I have spent many a happy hour gently swinging and soaking up the atmosphere. Penthouse View is a wonderful place to recharge the batteries and to take some 'me' time in an otherwise very busy life. It is easily accessible from Britain with a short flight time and then just a 10 minute drive from the local Split airport which is modern and efficient. Our friendly taxi driver Vjenceslav (or Mr V) can meet you at the airport and deliver you to the front door where Bozena will greet you and show you the apartment. I'm afraid there are three short flights of stairs to the top of the building but the view is definitely worth it.

Ciovo Island and Okrug Gornji are an ideal location to enjoy the unique delights of the Dalmatian Coast. You are based in a beautiful island community but have the added benefits of road links to the mainland by bridge which means you can easily explore the wider Dalmatian coast area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Yes the arrangements were exellent and we had a wonderful time. The apartment is absolutely lovely and the views amazing. I think something very special about the

accommodation is that it feels as if every item is chosen with personal care and that makes you feel welcome. The Island is beautiful and there is so much to explore nearby.

Wonderful Apartment - Fantastic Sunsets

  • 4 of 5

The apartment had every home comfort that you would want. It was very clean and very well maintained. The owner provided us with a lot of information before we went - which was useful. It was lovely sitting out on the balcony watching the beautiful sunsets. However the dates that we went 17th - 27th Sept - the building ban for the Summer was over so nearly everyday, (well the days that we had a 'local' day and apart from the weekend), there was a digger working nearby cutting through rock so that they could build a swimming pool. It did spoil things a little. One day it didn't stop until 6.00pm.

You need to be fit to rent this apartment - 40 steps (5 flights) up to the front door and apartment on the top of a steep hill (or have a car). However the roads are very narrow and loads of scooters, so driving was a nightmare.

Having said all this we did have a lovely relaxing holiday. Great visits to Split, Hvar and the blue cave. We really enjoyed the little ferry to Trogir - spent most of our time here. Beautiful town with some fantastic restaurants.

Owner's Response: It was such a shame that there was building work nearby during your holiday. I'm glad it didn't spoil your relaxation too much. It was completely unexpected as neither us or any of our guests have had any noise problems in September before, although we do know that building work is allowed to recommence during the winter months. Our "penthouse" position at the top of the building and a hill is the reason for the fantastic unrivalled views we enjoy from the apartment. This is something to consider when making your holiday choice as there will inevitably be some steps and a bit of a climb up from the beach. I do think though that you will find it is not that onerous and definitely worth the extra effort.

Beautiful apartment with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week and it was perfect! Mr V was waiting for us from the airport as arranged and dropped us at the apartment where we where met by Bozina, a really friendly lady. The apartment has everything in it that you should ever need and was beautifully clean and tidy when we arrived. The views from the apartment are stunning and the sunsets to die for. The apartment is up high and if you weren't fit when you arrive, you will be when you leave...

It was so easy to get from the beach to Trogir by water taxi, cost 20 Kuna each way per person. The water taxi is such a lovely way to get to and fro as it provides a cooling breeze and is so relaxing. Trogir is great with tiny streets and plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from to suit any budget.

The trip into Split was easy too on the number 37 local bus, although we did return on the ferry which provided a fabulous cruise back to Trogir.

There is lots to do and see in this area of Croatia, but also there is the opportunity to just relax and do nothing.

We would definitely return and be most happy to stay in this lovely apartment again.

Lovely apartment with great views

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was lovely. Modern with all amenities. Clean and very comfortable. The balcony was great with table, chairs and swing for up to three people. Wonderful to relax there, drink a glass of wine and watch the beautiful scenery. The whole are was lovely, very typically Croation with plenty of delicious places to eat or buy food. The main beach was clean and the water clear with many places to sit and sun beds for cheap hire. Even huge parasols near some of the bars to shade whole families. Many are not charged if you are patrons of the bar but prices very good. lots of fresh salad, fish and local delicacies such as calamari - delicious! The ferries are very regular and cheap to Trogir which is an old town with lots of small shops and market, more bars and restaurants.

The only drawback to the apartment was that there is a steep walk on the road, up from the beach but that means you can eat more delicious croissants for breakfast with no guilt!

We really loved it and were very sad to leave. We would definitely go back again for another relaxing break and would recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your holiday experience and giving lots of helpful information about the area. It's always a pleasure to hear that our guests have loved the region and the apartment. It is a steep climb up from the beach but everyone seems to think as we do that the view from the balcony is worth the effort. We always take it slowly and often stop en route for a drink in one of the bars on the way. After all there's no rush when you are on holiday and the locals are very friendly.

What a fantastic apartment and wonderful place Croatia is. The people of Croatia are lovely and warm

  • 4 of 5

Myself and wife stayed for one week and the only problem was it wasn't long enough! The apartment was well maintained, clean and in a great location for shops, restaurants and the beaches. To top it all off the view from the balcony looking over the bay was simply stunning from sun rise to sunset. (Camera at the ready!)

Local restaurants offered every dish you could think of, and every meal was so delicious. If you love fish then you can't go wrong.

We went on a trip to the national water parks seeing the stunning water falls and was a great day out that is highly recommended.

We had a quad bike experience that took you out through the countryside to give you a different view of the Island, again worth a booking.

We walked over to the old town which was beautiful. Great restaurants, shops and markets to see.

We had a coastal walk which took us too beaches that had clear blue waters and great for sunbathing. Restaurants were along the way a must for a glass of wine or beers looking out to sea.

Just writing this review makes me want to go back again, thank you to Cynthia and family for a wonderful week, one that me and my wife will always remember.

Looking forward to going back very soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your holiday experiences with us. It's good to hear about the quad bike trip as this is something we have not yet tried ourselves but sounds like it's something we should do. I am really pleased that your holiday worked so well for you. It is a lovely area with so much to do and see and we are looking forward to our own late season visit.

Fantastic apartment with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

We felt thoroughly chilled after our stay at Penthouse apartment. It is so clean and comfortable with the benefit of so many extra home comforts that you don't normally expect in a holiday apartment. It really felt like home from home & Cynthia has thought of all you could possibly need !

The main beach in Okrug Gornji can get busy but we found just by walking further around the coast you can find quieter areas. We particularly enjoyed the walk to Mavarcica beach which has lovely pine forests for shade and is much quieter. The sea is crystal clear and great for snorkelling. We also hired a boat from here.

The communication from Cynthia was fantastic and the taxi service from Mr V excellent. Bozena was so helpful and even drove us down to the beach at Duga Uvala which was so kind of her.

There are great restaurants, we particularly like Leonardos.

I have to say it was a great and relaxing holiday and quite difficult to tear ourselves away from the view from the apartment.

Cynthia really helped make the whole booking process a joy and we felt very looked after.

THE BEAUTIFUL DAMLATIAN COAST has a host of delights to explore. A water taxi boat trip from the local harbour (15 mins) will take you to the Unesco World Heritage City of Trogir, or go by bus or a leisurely walk (30-40 min). Enjoy a meal or a drink by the waterfront where luxurious yachts moor up whilst their owners explore the delightful Venetian architecture of the historic centre. Wander around the narrow cobbled alleyways, courtyards, restaurants, shops and street stalls or visit the castle. The old city walls shelter many beautiful buildings including the awe-inspiring Trogir Cathedral and just outside one of the ancient gates is a bustling market. Visit the old city of Split (just 25 min drive away) with its amazing Roman Architecture and Diocletian Palace. Explore the vast Roman ruins site at Salona. The Krka National Park (40 min drive) has spectacular waterfalls, lakes and forests to explore. Or why not take a boat trip to one of the many local islands such as Brac, Hvar, Vis or Korcula.

If you feel particularly laid back why not just spend the whole day reading and sunbathing on the balcony. Stock up with plenty of liquid refreshment and goodies and relax on the swinging seat or sun lounger. Put your favourite music on the CD player and mix up one of the delicious recipes in our Cocktail Book. Watch the boats and water activities in the bay and then cook yourself a delicious meal and dine on the balcony whilst watching the spectacular sunset. Finish off with a nightcap on the balcony and admire the night time view or snuggle up on the settee and watch a DVD.

A short 10–15 minute downhill walk from the apartment will take you to the local beach. It is tempting to spend the whole day relaxing on the beach where you can hire a sun lounger and parasol for the day. The many beach bars offer fast food snacks, ice creams, cool beers, soft drinks and cocktails just yards from you. Stalls sell fresh fruit, juices, pancakes, jewellery, gifts and beach goods and you can even have a massage. The warm sea is a delight for swimmers and the long gently shelving beach with its safety nets makes it a haven for children and non swimmers. Whether floating on your lilo or body board or going for a strong swim this beach is perfect. There is a warm refreshing breeze from the sea especially in the afternoons.

Try your hand at snorkelling to see the wide variety of fish species which live in the rocky crevices. Make sure to wear jelly shoes or similar for comfort on the shingly beach and remember to apply the sunscreen. If you want something a little more energetic hire a pedalo, jet ski or small boat from the local Beach Sports Centre at the end of the beach or try your hand at paragliding or banana boat and rubber ring rides. For more solitude you can take a walk through the pinewoods beyond the harbour to secluded local coves but make sure to take a bottle of water.

After your relaxing day on the beach visit one of the various restaurants close to the beach or by the harbour for a lovely evening meal in the perfect setting. The menus are varied and delicious and the waiters are attentive. Finish your evening with a cocktail or two in one of the beach bars whilst watching the sun set spectacularly out at sea. Take a leisurely evening stroll along the beach and listen to the live entertainment or disco music in each bar. The beach area at night is a vibrant and colourful place with a real holiday island atmosphere and the view at night is every bit as beautiful as it is by day. Join one of the weekly Fishermans' Nights with live music, numerous stalls and a beach barbeque. The uphill walk back to the apartment is not so onerous in the cool of the evening especially when you have had a drink or two and once you are back on your own balcony sitting with a nightcap in your hand watching the bright lights and the stars twinkling in the bay all seems well with the world. Just a perfect day……….

For a good day out take a 'Fish Picnic' boat excursion to the nearby island of Solta and the Blue Lagoon with lunch and plenty of local schnaps and red wine included. Tickets can be booked the day before. Various other boat trips are advertised by the harbour, some starting in Okrug and others in Trogir. These range in price and distance, one of the most expensive being a speed boat excursion to the famous Blue Cave.

Why not be even more adventurous and take a Quad & Buggy Safari through the forest and mountain trails of Ciovo or visit the island's Paintballing Centre.

WATER TAXI TO TROGIR This operates from the local harbour every half an hour during the summer (from 8.30am – 11.30pm in peak season) adults 20 kunas, children 10 kunas. It's a short trip along the coast and past the boatyard which takes approx 20 mins and is a very pleasant and scenic way of travelling into Trogir.
