About the property


The Zen Hale is the perfect home base for your exploration of the Big Island. We are conveniently located on the sunny side of Waimea Town only a 10 minute drive to the best Kohala beaches and minutes from HPA. Our convenient central location is ideal for setting out on day hikes or exploring all the sites on Hawaii Island. The unique serenity of this one bedroom, one bath cottage offers ocean and mountain views enhanced by cool breezes and mild temperatures. The kitchen is fully furnished with full size refrigerator, large convection/toaster oven, microwave and a 2 burner state of the art induction cook top. Luxurious linens adorn the separate bedroom and a beautiful stone shower appoint the bathroom.

Use the gas BBQ outdoors to prepare the local foods purchased at the farmers market then relax while viewing the blanket of stars. A separate laundry room with washer and dryer is available for use and laundry detergent is provided.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, bodyboarding and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing opportunities. Head to the Paniolo Town of Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries. From there is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park or a glimpse of the stars and planets at Mauna Kea Observatory.

There's no better way to experience the amazing cultural diversity of Hawaii Island than to visit one of the farmers’ markets that take place all around the island. You’ll find fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables used in Hawaii Regional Cuisine, exotic varieties that are as intriguing as they are tasty plus an eclectic collection of prepared foods.The market is also a great place to pick up handmade artwork or a unique gift and strike up a conversation with the artist who made them.

About Matthew

Moved to the Big Island 10 years ago from Portland, Oregon. I have lived all around the U.S. but I feel that this is my true home. Rose and I just spent an amazing month in Nepal and India, but the best part was coming back to Hawaii. In 1999, while attending an alternative building design seminar in Cottage Grove, Oregon, I was introduced to the concept of permaculture. Although the original focus of permaculture was sustainable food production, over time the philosophy of permaculture has expanded to encompass economic and social systems. Today I have my Permaculture Design Certification and also my Permaculture Teacher Training Certification. My passion now is working to make our Big Island property an example of permaculture design, and in cultivating Bodhisattva Healing Gardens to become a place where these healing ideas are shared.

Very cozy and peaceful. Owner super nice.

Couple of small suggestions: needs new hammock and firmer mattress.

Very cute, cozy, clean cottage, away from tourist crowds.

Matthew was a gracious host, Lynette an accommodating assistant (tho in Arizona and a different time zone, which wasn't clear when I tried to contact her), the property is peacefully adjacent to a fruit farm and green hills. Received a lovely fruit basket on the 4th day of our stay. Would have liked larger windows to admire the scenery from inside, and to let more light in on dark dreary days (admittedly rare). Nice accessible washer/dryer. DVD player unreliable; suboptimal volume when DVD did work--did not communicate this to Matthew. Bed was ok but not totally comfortable for 2 people of different weights (sagging into the middle). All in all, a peaceful getaway!

"Cute, Cozy and clean" is what we strive to offer to each of our guests.....the lush and private property definitely provides a relaxing space away from crowds while still being close to the best Kohala Coast beaches and Waimea Town. The ripe fruits and veggies from our gardens is a bonus we always like to share. Lynette is my sister and she helps Rose and I with reservations and assists guests with arrival information. When she is not here in Waimea she is spending time in Arizona with her family. Even though there is a 3 hour time difference when she is in Prescott, she will always make herself available to a guest. I'm happy she was able to answer your call and help when you arrived. I don't know what the issue with the DVD was but I have replaced it and would have done so while you were here had I known you were having difficulty. Living in this paradise has always been my dream and is a plus for my guests because I'm generally here to help with their requests immediately or as soon as possible. Beds are a highly personal preference and I apologize that you didn't find it to your liking. We have never had a prior complaint about it being uncomfortable Thank you again for allowing Rose and I to be your hosts and for taking the time to write a review. privacy and perfect location

I was so very lucky to find Zen Hale available when I chose to leave early from a substandard rental. It was exactly right for a single person (though would be equally great for a couple). Though a studio, the bedroom area is separated by a dramatic lava rock wall. The kitchen is quite adequate, and the bathroom is also comfortably sized and has a huge shower. Plenty of windows allow for cross breezes. Two amazing advantages, on top of the very pleasant accommodations, are the quiet privacy and the superb location just ten minutes from Waimea (with all of its great restaurants) and the top-rated beaches of Hapuna and at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. If you don't make to the top of Mauna Kea for star-gazing, the Milky Way is astounding right outside the door!

Zen Hale was just what the doctor ordered. Relaxing, quiet, gorgeous, and welcoming. The owner, Matthew is kind and welcoming and has done an amazing job with the rentals on property. I grew up in the area so knew this is where I wanted to be. You are only 10 minutes from one of the best beaches in the world. Waimea is a great central location. The scenery and ambiance cannot be beat. Lynette was very helpful and informative when I booked my stay as well as when I arrived and needed guidance (she and Matthew make a great team). I stayed for a week and wished it hadn't ended. I will be back! Thank you Matthew and Lynette!

Zen Hale is a very pretty property with nice landscaping, and cute interior decorating. It's clean, and nicely located for the northwest side beaches and making trips to the eastern side also and only a quick few miles to town for groceries, and gas etc. The owner (Matthew) and manager (Lynette) were very wlecoming, responsive, and prompt in communications - we appreciated the fresh eggs and use of some beach equipment, and the hens even chipped in for our composting needs! It's a tranquil location with some lovely open views - we enjoyed the quiet, peaceful, and relaxed ambience, and chatting with Matthew. Wished we could have stayed longer!

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
