Located 6.3 miles north of downtown Ketchum our home is a quiet oasis in a residential neighborhood called Eagle Creek. It features a great room with a unique 4 sided glass fireplace, a large, 50 inch, flat screen television, Blue ray DVD Player and wireless internet. The back deck has a hot tub under a covered gazebo to help you relax after a hard day of skiing the sloops in the Winter or hiking and biking the trails in the Summer.
It comes with a washer and dryer and fully equipped
kitchen. It has a large dining room table that seats 14 and can be expanded to seat 20. The downstairs has one bedroom, which is our bunk room and sleeps, 4 with the bathroom room located right across the hall. Upstairs has 3 bedrooms and two full baths. All have queen size bed with flannel sheets and down comforters for the Winter.
The master bedroom also has a set of bunk beds, with cable TV, a new 40 inch Flat Screen, Blue Ray DVD Player and private bath. The other two bedrooms also have queen beds and share a full bath.
The house comes with a double car garage and cleaning service so at the end or your stay you just walk out the door.
My wife & I love to ski. We live and work in Portland Oregon, but love Sun Valley and the Wood River Valley. Good friends recommended the Sun Valley Ski School as one of the best in the nation and we took our first lessons on Baldy in the mid 70's. The 300 days of sunshine, the snowmaking, the grooming and the improvements made by Earl Holding, have made it our favorite winter resort. The groomed corduroy with an inch of 'cheater snow' make everyone a wonderful skier, you just can't make a mistake! But as the saying goes people come to Sun Valley for the Winters but stay because of the Summers. As good as Sun Valley is in the Winter, it is even better in the Summer.
Jim Pittman purchased this house in 1979
With a name like 'The Red Neck Retreat' you know there has to be a story and there is! After way too many drinks on a ski trip to Park City in the 70's we decided we could do our own version of a 'time share.' We took a vote and Sun Valley was everybody's favorite. When we sobered up the next day it still seemed like a good idea. So 5 guys formed a partnership in 1979 with a mandatory Buy/Sell in the event of death, disability or divorce and came up with the name 'The Red Neck Retreat,' after the Jerry Jeff Walker song 'Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother.' There is a ski sign over the garage with double black diamond's that says 'Hardcore.'
Hardcore is what we call the boys 3 day ski trip in January that has being going on since the mid 60's. It still only has two rules: One, no matter what you do the night before you are on the lift at 9 am. Two, you ski the last run of the day from top to bottom and the last guy down buys the first round of beer.
My last remaining partner died on the chairlift in Feb. 2012. He skied the bowls all day in a foot of new snow, had lunch at Seattle Ridge and died of a heart attack on the Cold Springs lift heading home. Not a bad way to go, but way too young at age 69. As a result we have decided to expand the rental beyond the handful of friends who go every year.
We choose the house out North of town because it is out of the hustle and bustle of downtown Ketchum, yet only 15 minutes from the Warm Springs and 11 minutes to the River Run lifts in the Winter. It also catches the afternoon sun.
With an easement to the Big Wood River we enjoy some of the best fly fishing in the Wood River Valley. Only a few locals know of the access to the river from our neighborhood. In the Summer when the town is packed with tourists, you are not affected. You are just 2 miles to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the Harriman trails for Cross Country Skiing in the Winter and Mt. Biking and Hiking in the Summer. Galena Lodge is just 17 miles North and Red Fish Lake Stanley 33 miles from there.
During the Winter we drive 11 minuets to the River Run Lodge and ride the Gondola, to the Round House, to begin our day.
We have stayed at this house many times over the years and appreciate all of the improvements the owners have made.
The gas log lighter is the best, along with the new convection oven and gas counter top stove.
We love the new washer, dryer and dishwasher as well as the white quartz counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms.
The Pendleton blankets on all of the beds were a nice upgrade along with the stained glass lamps. We will be back for closing weekend next April
Great fireplace and open area for relaxation!
This is our second year staying in this home. It's super roomy and a terrific getaway for kids of all ages. The bedrooms are big and the floor plan allows for private time as well as family time. The kitchen is well-stocked. The home is very close to skiing, bike trails, and downtown restaurants and shops. A total find!
This home fit 3 families comfortably. There was plenty of kitchen utensils and cookware for a large group. Hot tub was a great apes ski option. Board games for the kids, and they had their own bunk room and bathroom off the kitchen. It is a few miles north of Ketchum and you will need a car (or bike) to get to town. The only recommendation I would have is to put some sort of railings on the top bunks to keep the kids from rolling off. Overall it was a terrific home base for us during the Western States Youth Nordic Races at Hulen Meadows.
5 stars for accurate description, good value and fun place.
The cabin is a little older, but it is well kept and in good condition. Sleeps 12 comfortably.
Location is only 10 minutes north of Ketchum and Sun Valley.
We had a great time!!
This is our second year staying here during the Sun Valley Nordic Festival/Boulder Mountain Tour weekend. The accommodations were perfect for our group. Our crew of 8 was very comfortable here and will likely return next year. The kitchen was well equipped. The hot tub was most appreciated after the difficult BMT this year. The great room with large dining table, sitting area, and 360 degree fireplace is very cozy. The garage was well used as our ski prep area. This quiet location is close enough to Ketchum to go downhill skiing or visit restaurants but right in the middle of a tremendous amount of world-class Nordic skiing. Sure it would be ideal as a base for summer hiking, mountain biking, or fly fishing in the Wood River Valley, and not too far for longer excursions north over Galena Pass to the Sawtooths and Stanley area.
Our home is 6.3 miles North from the center of town in Ketchum, Idaho off highway 75, on the West side of the road. Located 2 miles from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and just 17 miles from Galena Lodge with world class cross country skiing in the winter and mountain biking and hiking in the Summer. We are 100 yards from the Big Wood River with an easement to the river. The Wood River trail system runs directly behind our house for mountain biking and hiking in the Summer and snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the Winter.
