About Betsy Reinard Tropical Destinations LLC

I fell in love with this amazing property. The minute I walked onto this place I was in awe of it and totally blessed to have it.

An ICU nursing background with complimentary medicine interests.

I have always wanted to be involved with healing through natural means. To connect western technology & medicine with the mind body connection. This teaches us that environment can be great medicine for someone with a stressful lifestyle. Mermaid's Oasis offers a respite from the daily grind and have seen the effect this has on guests that arrive stressed, nervous, agitated and leave rested, with serenity, tranquility, peacefulness.

We are in touch with the reputable healing centers and therapists on this island. There are massage therapists close by and will make house calls.

Kalani health retreat less than 1 mile away teaches art, yoga, hula, cocnut and lahala weaving , ecstatic dance, 12 step programs, massage therapy with lomi lomi, hot rocks and has great food too!

Why Betsy Reinard Tropical Destinations LLC chose Puna District

Whats not to love? Ocean front, no visible neighbors or road, seclusion, privacy, the ultimate destination for serenity, peace, tranquility.

Eye candy views, the tidal pools, expansive lawns and the jungle canopy of flora that keeps the road far away from the guest. There is a peaceful uplifting feeling for those that come here. Many people comment on the 'good feeling' spiritual experience they get here. Let the surf lull you to sleep every night! Watch the pink orange sun rise over the ocean each morning.

What makes this cottage unique

Oceanfront, unobstructed views, no street or houses between the cottage and the beach, tidal pools to play, examine and soak in. Abundant sea life such as whales, dolphins, sea turtles and reef creatures to marvel at. Very private on all 4 sides, so unique! Not visible from the street. Play croquet or volleyball or just dig your toes in the lawn.

There is a kayak and a paddleboard to rent along with the snorkel equipment, boogie boards etc. to use free of charge.

Camping is available for the extra guests. There are tents available for rent. There is a 3/4 bath detached. A delightful bamboo and river rock outdoor shower with hot and cold running water.

The kitchen is Jimmy Buffet style (complete with the parrot picture) outdoor and open with a propane stove and refrigerator, stainless steel sink, large cupboard to stow away your goods. All with a million dollar view!!

Our guests have a commercial stainless steel propane grill at their disposal with a side burner to grill, roast, make rice and cook a complete meal.

Enjoy your gourmet meal or snack on the open lanai/kitchen/dining room with the best view in Puna.

DISCLOSURE: This is a lava zone 2. The lava flows on this Island which many people are counting on when visiting. The flow is stopped and not progressing for many months. The alternate routes have been done in case of future needs. Insurance and mortgage companies are offering sales in the areas of the previous threat. There are 9,000 residents who all need a route to do commerce here. I know of 2 alternate routes being opened up. One will reconnect hwy 130 to Volcano and the other to Hilo will be a shorter distance then the current route. This is the Big Island experience as it happens!

The best nine days of our lives

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have been to a Hawaiian island four times, twice to the Big Island. This stay was our best; we did not want to go home.

We spent 9 days at this location. For those who are looking for a high-end resort this is not the place. For those looking to unplug and enjoy the beauty of the Kalapana are this is it.

The cottage is a single room, with bed and futon inside. The kitchen area is out front on the deck. We enjoyed cooking breakfast with an ocean front view, taking our morning coffee and tea down to the chairs by the lava rocks beside the ocean watching the waves come in. Betsy is the owner and host, and she was the best. She has a couple of dog and cats, and they were welcome guests with us (against Betsy's rules, but we couldn't help ourselves...). Her house is on the property as well, but she is very good about giving privacy to her guests. Her main goal is to make sure that her guests are set in the cottage and educated about all of the excellent locations to see nearby.

We were able to leave our four sons at home (college and late high school age) while we traveled. It was nice to be able to relax together, not having to worry about the day-to-day of work and family life. The Hilo side of the island has a lot to offer.

The Big Island has coqui frogs, which are loud at night but surprisingly good for sleep. There is a lot of rain as well, but in short bursts, typical of Hawaii. When done the sun dries it up quickly. All of this for us enhanced the experience.

I would highly recommend a stay here if unplugging and a dose of tropical Hawaii is what you are looking for.

10 Year Anniversary

  • 5 of 5

WOW! What a unique experience. My wife and I spent a whole week here and everyday was a new adventure. Betsy welcomed us and made us feel right at home. The drive down to the cottage was amazing. You really feel like you are going into another world. The views from the property are worth the price and then some. The outdoor kitchen and shower were brand new experiences for us, but it was awesome! Betsy hooked us up with places to go, things to do, snorkel gear, and showed us how to open a fresh coconut. If you want to see the real Hawaii, then this place is right on the money. Thank you again Betsy for everything. We cannot wait to come back!

Owner's Response: I love meeting my guests. this was a 10 yr anniversary for these folks. They were here to see and do everything they could. The passion fruit vine had climbed into the kitchen space and shower but the guests loved the beauty of the flowers. there was a romantic vine covered cottage theme going on. I just recently did a major pull back of the vines. the flora is amazingly beautiful even the "weeds" can awe us. Loved having these guests and hearing about their trip. May all their anniversaries be as special as this one.

Oceanfront cottage that exceeded all our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 3 lovely days/nights at this oceanfront cottage which truly has a breathtaking view. The cottage is very comfortable and the outdoor (covered) kitchen has everything you need. The owner is so warm, welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, we didn't want to leave! The owner's tips/suggestions for daily activities were spot on - from the best hike in the national park, to the coolest beaches (beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards and snorkel equipment free to use!), to the Wednesday night food and music at Uncle Roberts. Now that we are home, we are asking ourselves why we ever left! We highly recommend a stay at this lovely oasis as you will feel so welcome, so comfortable and will have everything you could imagine! The outdoor shower was the icing on the cake!

Owner's Response: These guests did more in 3 short days than most do in a week. Definitely hit some of the best options on the must do list with volcano day trip and the local beaches all a short drive 1-5 miles. They also did a Hilo waterfall day trip including the Botanical Gardens and the waterfalls. It's not hard to plan your days with so many options and just staying here all day basking in the sun is a great choice. Many guests become good friends and return. Will you? The open kitchen lanai is covered in a Lilikoi vine that is in full bloom . It's beauty and fragrance makes this a romantic getaway for any couple.

Lovely getaway

  • 5 of 5

The property is a lovely, basic setup right by the water. We loved cooking and eating on the porch. Showering outside with a view of the ocean was wonderful. Betsy is a great hostess who thinks of every possible thing you could need-beach towels, snorkel gear, bug spray, french press, coconuts. We miss Yoda, Penny, and Pharaoh, our four legged hosts;) It was a blissful trip and we plan to come back. It's perfect for those of you who want to unplug and relax. Great for a couple, a family with 1-2 grade school age kids, or one person who just wants peace and quiet.

Owner's Response: The staff at Mermaid's Oasis (the pets and myself) wish to graciously accept this review and comment on the snorkel gear. Now available include a paddleboard, kayak along with 2 bikes. I see the bulky towels are hard to bring and may require some shopping to find a perfect one so providing these things to help folks have the best vacation ever is my goal. Each visitor becomes a friend and a return guest if desired. Opening a coconut with my guests is fun and a great experience for them as well as an opportunity for some hands on skills.

Great oceanfront cottage with a great hostess

  • 5 of 5

Had such a great time in this rustic yet very comfortable cottage. Breathtaking view is a step away, the outdoor shower and lanai surrounded by palm trees, ocean waves and birds singing all night were quite something I would never forget. Betsy is a great hostess, very helpful and thoughtful. Can't wait to go back. I would prepare a mosquitos repellent next time.

Owner's Response: aloha and thank you for the review. I love to respond and hopefully we can stay in touch with many members of the Mermaid Oasis fan club. I do like to provide towels and snorkel gear although that can be very hard to fit so if can bring your mask and snorkel. The chairs and coolers give you opportunity to have a picnic anywhere you like to go. the day trips can be fun and coming home to a nice comfy cottage with this view and great bed will make the vacation worthwhile. I have stayed in very posh places but felt isolated from the outdoors. that wont happen here. You are part of the great views and ocean breezes.

This property was perfectly as described. Don't expect to check into the Ritz. We enjoyed every minute of it. Authentic lush Hawaiian landscape. It was great to eat meals while watching palm trees and ocean. Betsy is a great hostess, very helpful and gives you the amount of privacy that you want. I miss Penny and Yoda(sweet puppies) and Farrel(if it's possible to miss a cat). It was nice to spend time on this side of the island this year. We would definitely return to this great rental!

Owner's Response: The jungle canopy meets the ocean at this pristine location which would be forever altered with a Ritz Hotel . We do have private driveway and canopy to park under. Park 20ft from your cottage. Something the hotels don't provide. A newspaper is provided to help keep you posted on the temperature, weather tides, the local events and news if you care to tune in. Keeping it simple is the theme here for peaceful relaxation, de-stressing, exploring and learning the flora, fauna,( the land , aina). i try to share a coconut opening with each guest and give them tips on the hidden treasures this area has to offer. I often learn of new ones from them. I listen to their experiences with great interest and pas along the tidbits to the next guest. Each guest takes away memories that will stay with them forever and they leave the host enriched by their experience and friendship. Aloha is a broad term and when I practice it a peaceful feeling comes over all involved

Notes:
This is a unique one of a kind property. the opportunity to stay here is coming to an end after february 2017. this will become a long term rental. Meditate! The perfect ambiance for solitude, reflection, writing, reading or seeing the local tourist attractions up close, with nature. Many people come to the Big Island to get connections with spiritual, and or health issues. We can even help with a massage therapist or other local practitioners. This property is eco friendly and is its own power company. We feel you wont miss 'the grid' after this experience. We are powered mainly by the sun/solar panels. When extra power needs arise our generator does the trick. We also charge solar batteries as needed via the generator. Maybe 1 hour per day average. We use LED and solar lights, conserve energy, yet have ample electricity for refrigeration, water pump, lights and TV, cell phone PC's and all necessary appliances even a drip coffee maker.
