Mermaid's Hideaway: Come and getaway where the ever-elusive Mermaids love to stay.

Casual cottage/beach bungalow style with Hawaiian and oceanic decorative touches throughout. Sitting well above the rest, this home offers panoramic views from nearly every room. Relax on the expansive 700 sq ft deck as the tradewinds roll off of the ocean to keep you cool outside.

World famous Lanikai Beach is about a 300 meter/5 minute walk, just over a city block away with easy public access.

Come hideaway in a cozy neighborhood that boasts jogging, biking, hiking and fun in the sun....private feeling, conveniently close to the beach, but just a bit set back to give quiet and privacy on days when it is busier on the beachfront.

Caretaker lives nearby for responsive service. Neighborhood is quiet and residential, so a premium is placed on mellow, respectful and neighborly guests. House is a main floor and upper level -- downstairs unit is now empty and will stay so.

Property not appropriate for parties, reunions, large family gatherings, receptions, etc. due to limited parking (2 spots) and noise concerns. Property has strict 8 person guest limit, generally 6 adults is the comfort maximum.

Lovely Compromise - Beauty and the Beach

  • 4 of 5

Lanikai is a lovely beach in general, but specifically for snorkeling. We were three 65 year old, quite active couples. The owners had this property for sale at the time, but held off any showings for the week we were there. Kim was very helpful with some of the problems we encountered such as needing lounge chairs and replacing cracked boogey boards. The property was clean and, as others have said, we found ourselves spending much of our time on the huge deck. If it were still on the market we would come back.

Great home away from home. THE VIEWS FROM THIS PLACE ARE INCREDIBLE!!!

  • 4 of 5

Caretakers were great to work with. Very easy to communicate with and answered any questions we had promptly. Thanks for everything Kimi and Terri. Mahola!! Gave us perfect instructions so we found the place no problem at 1:30am!! Woke up to an absolutely amazing view!! There were seven of us here, and there was plenty of room. Ran into each other a bit in the kitchen but that happens at home too! We loved sitting out on the large deck, my husband and I had our morning coffee out on the upper deck off the bedroom every morning and just stared out at the view. Actually any time we were at home we were sitting up on "our" deck. Beach towels were provided, boogie boards and beach chairs were there for our use. Only a short walk to Lankai beach. We were very sad to leave. House was very comfortable. Our first time in Hawaii and it was truly an amazing and unforgettable vacation. Will definitely be coming back to this area.

We loved this place

  • 5 of 5

Not sure where the 1-star review about this place came from. Someone had a bad day? This place is really great. The home is a comfortable beach-chic bungalow feel with nice bedrooms, some cool retro tiling in the bathrooms, and a cozy kitchen and common area hangout. But the lanai is best and where we wanted to spend all our time --- well, when not at the absolutely AMAZING beach! It's a short one block walk away, and nice to be a little away from the crowds with our private and majestic views. The information pre-trip, the greeting and briefing, and the responsiveness during our stay by the caretaker was great. (We needed some more paper products) Definitely coming back next year, bringing friends.

Beautiful Home in a Great Location

  • 4 of 5

This is a great place to spend a week of vacation on Oahu. The beach, a 4 minute walk, is beautiful. The hiking in the area is varied and excellent. Kailua beach is a 10-15 minute walk if you want to visit another beach. There are some nice restaurants in Kailua (we liked Buzz's the best) and good grocery stores to stock up on provisions.

The best feature of the house is the huge deck. We spent most of our time on the deck when we were at the house. The deck is great for grilling and dinner, or just relaxing with a good book. Having the Moku islands to look at adds to the view off the deck. Thanks, we had a great time!

Everything we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Mermaid's Hideaway. First off, the home was very clean upon arrival and the views are just amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed the large deck, which we ate breakfast at almost every morning, as well as several dinners. The gas bar-b-q was awesome, and added to our lovely dinners. The upper deck was perfect for an early morning coffee to watch the sunrise.

The layout of the house was quite conducive to our family--there are two bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry room, and a living area downstairs and then an upstairs living area adjacent to another bedroom and bathroom. It was spacious and allowed for privacy for our family.

The kitchen is stocked of all the necessary items--we cooked in almost every breakfast and dinner.

We loved the closeness to the beautiful Lanikai beach--it's just about a 5 minute walk. Kailua is very close as well. Terri made sure we had beach chairs and boogie boards to use. There is nice lounging furniture on the lower deck which we took advantage of, too.

Terri was very helpful and wonderful, checking via texts with our family throughout our vacation, making sure all was up to our expectations, if we needed anything, offered suggestions, etc. We are very thankful for their hospitality! If we vacation again in Oahu, we would definitely stay at this lovely home again. I would highly recommend this home for others, especially families! Thank you for a relaxing and memorable week.

There are certainly general expectations one has when renting a vrbo property. Had we been made aware of the state of the house we definitely would have chosen somewhere else to spend our vacation. There are noisy renters underneath the house which were an unfortunate surprise. They frequently had guests over and at times were loud and noisy; the view from the lanai is beautiful, however it was not relaxing having to listen to their party noises.

The list of concerns for this home is extensive. It is in a nice location, with a good view, however that is the only thing going for it. We would NOT ever stay here again, and had we known the condition of the home, we would never have chosen it as a rental for our vacation.

Why we would anyone want to sit in rusty nearly broken beach chairs, use a moldy cooler, sleep in pilled sheets, have a fold out couch that is not functional as a bed (which was rectifed however took energy to make happen) broken blinds and holes in the screens, and deal with rodants (MICE!)on a vacation? Additionally, there are renters in the bottom of the house that are noisy and take away from a relaxing experience on the lanai. The description of the property is VERY misleading.

We have rented several other vrbo properties over the years and have never had to deal with a house in such a state. Regardless of the cost of everything (owner offered a discount at booking), it affected our overall vacation experience and that was very unfortunate. This is time with extended family we will never have again.

-shocking state of fold out couch mattress - needs replacing. Unfortunate discovery on the night of our arrival.

- old and broken blinds in downstairs bedroom, and master bedroom

-mice/rat(s) in kitchen with damage to washing up supplies

-very sad set of rusty beach chairs

-tired and falling apart boogie boards

- Beach cooler that looked like it had washed up on the beach - full of sand/mildew.

-pilled and old sheets

-noisy long term renters underneath the house really takes away from relaxing experience.

Find somewhere else to enjoy your vacation!!!

Owner's Response: It is with sadness that we respond to this extortive review that was written when we declined to provide compensation to these guests in exchange for not writing a negative review. We work hard to not only provide a great place to our guests, but to respond to their needs before, during and after their stay. Interestingly, guests who stayed immediately prior and immediately afterwards provided 5 star ratings and reported experiences in line with our norm and delight with the house and situation. We meet with guests in person to introduce the house, and are locally available within a 5 minute call for all concerns. We'll be right up front and agree that these guests were unhappy with many things about the house from the moment they arrived. The beach Items that get a lot of wear and exposure are replaced at intervals - for example, beach chairs, coolers, linens, etc. The home, like most in Hawaii, is on a professional termite and pest control plan, and like many homes in the tropics, can still have visitors when doors are left open and food is left out. We regret that we were unable to fulfill your expectations. Regarding adjacent renters - I'll simply point out that these same renters have lived in the unit during all of the other stays reviewed. Interestingly, we did field multiple complaints during these specific guests' stay from both side neighbors and from the long term renters regarding their noise impacts and multiple local visitors violating the house rules on additional guests and parking restrictions. The adjacent long-term rental has not been a noise issue for any other visitors. You can rest assured that we take all concerns voiced by guests incredibly seriously, and have addressed them where concerns were valid. We don't wish to engage in a he-said/she-said dynamic. We welcome pre-rental inspection by any guest, and have even done Skype video walk throughs to answer specific questions or concerns. We'll continue to strive to make each guest experience the best possible. We are proud that every guest save these have found the house a real treat. Mahalo!
