About Peggy Cavanaugh

My husband and I have been using the cottage as our vacation home for the past twenty-five years waiting for the day we could retire permanently to Northport. That day arrived 2011 when we built our new home across the street from the cottage.

Peggy Cavanaugh purchased this chalet in 1985

Why Peggy Cavanaugh chose Northern Michigan

We fell in love with this area in 1985 and have been vacationing here ever since then. There is so much to see and do in this very beautiful peninsula, walking, biking, wineries, casino, swimming, boating, kayaking to name a few. Spring, summer, fall all the season's offer a beautiful landscape in which to gaze.

What makes this chalet unique

Our cottage is located in a very private wooded setting where you can view the birds and wildlife in their natural setting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our vacation in so many ways. You were great hosts, the cottage was clean and inviting. There were so many activities to do and things to see. We are looking forward to renting next year.

Best Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed several stays at the Hummingbird and we love it! The peace and quiet of the neighborhood is so nice. We enjoyed daily walks and also hiked the trails in the neighborhood. We were blessed with great weather on this trip so we got out and did a lot of biking (Leelanau Trail, and just local road biking), hiking (Clay Cliff Dunes, Whaleback Natural area) and even dipped our toes in the water at the beach right in the neighborhood. We enjoyed eating at Fishchers, The Redheads Cafe and Tasting Room, Thunderbird Cafe, and the local brewery right in Northport for great beer and fun food at the food truck! So much to do and then to enjoy and a comfortable place to relax at the end of every day. We will look forward to our next visit and are glad it will be sooner rather than later!

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Hummingbird Cottage. It is a perfect place to stay and relax as well as to take advantage of day trips. We loved being close enough to walk to the beaches, which were wonderfully quiet. Our 4 kids loved building sand castles and getting in the water. The ability to use the kayaks was awesome! We also were able to take trips into the quaint towns on the peninsula, go to Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Mackinac Island/City. There is so much to see, and the weather was perfect. The cottage was well equipped for making our dinner every night, and had towels and plenty of beach toys. We had everything we needed, and felt very comfortable. We had a great time! Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Great Get-Away Location

  • 5 of 5

The Hummingbird Cottage was the perfect place to start our family vacation. The serene location was wonderful for getting away from our usual go-go-go lives. Our children loved being able to walk to the beach and enjoyed the kayaks. They also loved having the upstairs to themselves and spent a lot of time in their loft. It was amazing to see the deer walking so close to the house, adding to the peaceful environment. Each day we traveled to a different part of the Peninsula to explore Sleeping Bear Dunes, wineries, Traverse City and some of the lighthouses in the area. We would definitely stay here again, although we'll remember to bring more bug spray as the mosquitoes were very heavy with the wet spring. Thank you Peggy and Steve for sharing your wonderful cottage!

Wine Country!

  • 4 of 5

We spent a week at the cottage, my husband and our two small dogs. Liked the chalet style home, the roomy large deck & sleeping upstairs with the small deck door open. It was like a treehouse! Lots of quilts, afghans, books, movies. Northport was so nice- the brewery, marina, restaurants, shops. Must go to Peterson Park for an incredible view. Also take the evening coastal cruise out of Leland, only $20/. Beaches at the cottage are very nice, everyone's so friendly! Microwave was awkward, on the fridge. Bring your own hair dryer, soap, foil/Saran wrap. Bikes & kayaks are there too!

Beautiful area and comforts of home

  • 4 of 5

The Hummingbird Cottage surpassed our expectations for comfiness and cleanliness. We were familiar with the area which made sightseeing more enjoyable as the tress were still a vibrant color. Even those most days were drizzly we were able to walk with our retriever all over the woods and down to the bay to enjoy the waves hitting the beaches and walkways. Cherry Home Shores has much to offer and the development was nicely planned with tree preservation all throughout the area. Peggy & Steve were very welcoming and provided literature to see and do many activities in the surrounding area. Betty's Bakery in Northport was a hit on our stop into town each time.

Clean & Cozy

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent three nights at Hummingbird Cottage. It was very clean, with comfortable furniture, a well equipped kitchen and lots of clean towels in the bathroom. The cottage is in a nice neighborhood with a park and beach easy to walk to in a few minutes. The neighborhood even has wooded walking trails, that we took full advantage of to walk our dog. In the morning we enjoyed sunrises at the neighborhood beach. In the evening we drove to Christmas Cove beach for the sunset. We sat at the outdoor fireplace at Northport Brewery and enjoyed a beer, ate lunch at The Garage in Northport. (One negative: the buns on our perch sandwiches were stale.) We also ate lunch at The Cove in Leland and bought smoked fish at Carlson' s. We hiked the trails at Leelanua State Park and walked the beach at Cathead Bay. We bought pottery from Tom and George at Northport Pottery, wine from Chateau Contains and Donuts from Barb' s Bakery. On our last morning we had a great breakfast at The North End. Had a great fall color show. Appreciated the owners Peggy and Steve and their helpful info. Fun long weekend!
