About Peggy Cavanaugh

My husband and I have been using the cottage as our vacation home for the past twenty-five years waiting for the day we could retire permanently to Northport. That day arrived 2011 when we built our new home across the street from the cottage.

Peggy Cavanaugh purchased this chalet in 1985

Why Peggy Cavanaugh chose Northern Michigan

We fell in love with this area in 1985 and have been vacationing here ever since then. There is so much to see and do in this very beautiful peninsula, walking, biking, wineries, casino, swimming, boating, kayaking to name a few. Spring, summer, fall all the season's offer a beautiful landscape in which to gaze.

What makes this chalet unique

Our cottage is located in a very private wooded setting where you can view the birds and wildlife in their natural setting. Safe area for biking, hiking, swimming. Many wineries, restaurants, microbreweries, and shops. Close to Northport, Sutton's Bay and Leland.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our vacation in so many ways. You were great hosts, the cottage was clean and inviting. There were so many activities to do and things to see. We are looking forward to renting next year.

Cottage is in a beautiful setting nestled in the trees with a short walk to the beach.

The cottage was charming although a bit dated. The wrap around deck was perfect for enjoying morning coffee and listening to the many birds. We enjoyed the kayaks that were provided for our use. The owners were helpful in recommending things to do in the area and providing us with maps and literature.

Nice, quaint and quiet!

  • 4 of 5

Was a great cabin to get away for a while. The access to bikes and kayaks were a plus and the fact that dogs are welcomed here was the main reason we chose to stay here!

The only "gripes" (I wouldn't even call them gripes, just places for improvement) would be to maybe update the TV. It obviously isn't a HUGE deal because we were out and about during the day anyway, but coming back to an old CRT TV with VHS tapes (thanks for the blast to the past!) was the one thing that could be updated.

Also, a lot of spiderwebs. Yes. It's outdoors, but the top balcony was covered in them. Maybe a good sweep around the deck area.

But, these are small things that didn't even ruin any part of the vacation.

I would recommend!

Relaxing, cozy cottage in the woods

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our long weekend away at the Hummingbird Cottage. Total relaxation and peace! It felt like home the moment we walked in. We enjoyed dining out in Northport and Sutton's Bay, running on trails at the State Park, watching sunsets at Peterson Park, and lounging on the beach. Thank you, Peggy and Steve, for sharing your quaint, lovely cabin with us. We would love to return again. This is a special place in one of the most beautiful areas in Michigan!

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

Very pleased with the cottage, amenities, and location. This spot on the Peninsula is very serene and not too far from the town of northport. Would recommend to anyone who has not stayed on the Leelanau peninsula.

Best Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed several stays at the Hummingbird and we love it! The peace and quiet of the neighborhood is so nice. We enjoyed daily walks and also hiked the trails in the neighborhood. We were blessed with great weather on this trip so we got out and did a lot of biking (Leelanau Trail, and just local road biking), hiking (Clay Cliff Dunes, Whaleback Natural area) and even dipped our toes in the water at the beach right in the neighborhood. We enjoyed eating at Fishchers, The Redheads Cafe and Tasting Room, Thunderbird Cafe, and the local brewery right in Northport for great beer and fun food at the food truck! So much to do and then to enjoy and a comfortable place to relax at the end of every day. We will look forward to our next visit and are glad it will be sooner rather than later!
