About Peggy Cavanaugh

My husband and I have been using the cottage as our vacation home for the past twenty-five years waiting for the day we could retire permanently to Northport. That day arrived 2011 when we built our new home across the street from the cottage.

Peggy Cavanaugh purchased this chalet in 1985

Why Peggy Cavanaugh chose Northern Michigan

We fell in love with this area in 1985 and have been vacationing here ever since then. There is so much to see and do in this very beautiful peninsula, walking, biking, wineries, casino, swimming, boating, kayaking to name a few. Spring, summer, fall all the season's offer a beautiful landscape in which to gaze.

What makes this chalet unique

Our cottage is located in a very private wooded setting where you can view the birds and wildlife in their natural setting. Safe area for biking, hiking, swimming. Many wineries, restaurants, microbreweries, and shops. Close to Northport, Sutton's Bay and Leland.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our vacation in so many ways. You were great hosts, the cottage was clean and inviting. There were so many activities to do and things to see. We are looking forward to renting next year.

Great neighborhood

  • 3 of 5

The owners were very friendly and helpful. The cottage is located on a spacious wooded lot in a lovely upscale neighborhood. We appreciated being able to bring our dogs. The one dated bathroom was very tiny and the bedroom on the main level is small also. We kept bumping into each other when walking around those areas. The place smells musty and carpets could use a good cleaning. No dishwasher in the kitchen, which impacts sanitization of dishes by previous guests. So, overall not as clean or updated as we would prefer. Short length of beach on the bay about a block away. Cottage is 6 miles north of Northport, so it is a about an hour's drive from Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore area.

Owner's Response: We get the carpets cleaned prior to the rental season every year, however with back to back rentals throughout the summer it is difficult to get them professionally cleaned during the season. All dishes, glassware, and utensils are checked for cleanliness prior to each guest. I keep the cottage very clean. There is no dishwasher listed in the cottage description.

Great cozy cottage

  • 4 of 5

My hard to please teenage boys and I stayed for a few days and they loved it! Beaches nearby and sights to see. About an hour from Sleeping Bear Dunes. Large comfortable living room and very, very clean kitchen and bath. Hosts couldn't have been more accommodating. Made us feel like family. Will definitely be back.

We stayed here in early August, everything was amazing. We have been coming to the Hummingbird for several years, it has become a family favorite! The cottage is fully furnished with everything you need, The neighborhood is nice and quiet, the beach is fantastic and just a short walk from the cottage. Steve and Peggy are wonderful hosts as wells as genuinely nice people. We look forward to our next stay!

our stay at the Hummingbird Cottage

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The location was good, but we thought we were to be much closer to the water/beach. We feel the inside of the cabin was dark and dated. A little fresh paint and current furniture would be recommended. WIFI was greatly missed. We enjoyed the Northport community and the friendly people. Thank you.

Owner's Response: The beach is a short walk about 1/2 block from the cottage. My cottage has many antiques that have been collected over the years hence the dated furniture. Wifi is available at the clubhouse by the beach area.

Quite, Relaxing Gem!

  • 5 of 5

Pictures and description of the cottage are spot on. We loved the wrap around deck sitting out having coffee and seeing hummingbirds zipping by and deer through the woods. We used the bikes provided as well as the kayaks down at the private beach, both made our trip enjoyable. Steve and Peggy were very responsive, flexible and are all around great hosts. The cottage is dated, as evident by the pictures, but it has an incredible sound system and speakers straight out the 70's ('80's?)!
