About Nathan Scott
We bought our first home in calumet in 2005 and proceeded to gut it and remodel it working 16 hrs a day for 6 weeks and then we moved in. In 2008 we purchased this home in Mohawk with the intention of turning it into a vacation rental. Well, upon completion of the interior remodel we decided to move into it and really enjoyed living there for two years while renting out our first house by the year. In 2010 we purchased another larger home in calumet and moved in there and rented the Mohawk house out by the year for next 6 years, always intending to finish the exterior and someday turn it into the awesome vacation rental we knew it could be. In that 6 year period we purchased some other homes, remodeled them and added to our annual rentals. It wasn't until the summer of 2016 that we finally finished the exterior of the Mohawk house, tweaked the interior some and furnished the place so we can finally share this awesome space that is "The Red Door Retreat"!
Nathan Scott purchased this House in 2008
Why Nathan Scott chose Mohawk
We chose to purchase this home originally because of the location... We knew it'd be a great spot for a vacation home with all the things we enjoy easily accessible. Trail access right behind the house, ski hills nearby, mountain biking/hiking trails within a short drive, fishing/hunting nearby.
What makes this House unique
Conveniently located on US 41N in Mohawk with plenty of drive thru parking so no need to back trailers in and out. Quiet so you can relax after a long day on the trails or slopes and yet you can also kick up the stereo and play some pool if your not ready to unwind. The custom maple woodwork, high end furnishings, in wall sound, pool table recessed lighting etc... combine to give the home a wow factor that I still feel every time I walk in and I hope will stay with you long after you've gone.

House is great, even better in person!
Full size pool table, very comfortable leather reclining sofa and love seat and the huge t.v. are a definite bonus.
The owners made sure to stock the house with everything you'll need right down to extra toothbrushes, toothpaste,&razors.
The jetted tub in the upstairs bathroom is very deep and even has a cushioned headrest built right into it.
The bedding, towels, appliances, and dishes are all very high quality and brand new.
We loved how centrally located the house was as well. 20-30 minutes from Houghton/Hancock and Copper Harbor(must see)!!
It's only about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the Porcupine Mountains which makes for a very nice day trip.
We would definitely recommend Red Roof Retreat!!
The owner, Nate, was very accommodating and had a ton of information and suggestions on restaurants and attractions in the area.
Clean, cozy, perfect for a long weekend. Definitely looking forward to going
Clean, cozy, perfect for a long weekend. Definitely looking forward to going there in the spring!
The place was beautiful! Everything went smoothly, from making the arrangements to checking out.
The owner even emailed me to make that all was well! Looking to return when we can...and it's available!
Clean, comfortable, everything you need.
Cottage is spacious, clean and comfortable. Great shower, beds, and lots of extra touches. Responsive and helpful owner, thank you!
Clean, convenient, cozy
This place literally has everything you need! Nathan is a fabulous host! Great location to several areas in the Keweenaw. Clean and cozy! We stayed during the summer months and would love to rent again for the winter. Lovely place; you won’t be disappointed.
Six sets of thumbs up
We chose this property in December 2017 because it would be large enough to accommodate our family comfortably if they were all able to come with us. We chose Mohawk because it was a 10 minute drive to where our nephew was getting married. This property also met all of our requirements for washer/dryer, wifi, satellite tv, and a fully functional kitchen. In all of our years of renting, this was probably the best stocked place we have ever had. The beds were very comfortable, a huge plus. The master bathroom was spacious so several ladies could prep for the wedding at the same time. Large mirror and double sink were a definite plus. Having a second complete bathroom was great. The washer and dryer could accommodate large loads and were newer machines. We ended up hosting my sister-in-laws impromptu birthday celebration (we had the largest space) and this property could hold a host of family comfortably. We spent most of our time exploring Keweenaw, and it was very nice to find points of interest information in a binder. Nate mentioned a hiking opportunity to Mt. Baldy (Mt. Lookout) that we thoroughly enjoyed after I mentioned we were planning on hiking. Nate made sure we knew we could contact him if we needed to and we really appreciated that.
Conviently located on US 41N, Mohawk is the gateway to keweenaw county and big snow country. Approximately 100yards behind the house is trail 3 snowmobile/atv recreation trail which links to hundreds of miles of trails. The house has frontage on US 41 and Union st so you can pull in off of 41 and drive right through so you don't have to deal with backing trailers in or out. Mohawk is a nice central location with endless outdoor recreation activities nearby. You have Mt. Bohemia 22 miles to the north and Mt Ripley 18 miles to the south for skiing/snowboarding. There are several cross country skiing trail systems in the are including eagle harbor 20 miles north, Swede town trails in calumet 6 miles south and Michigan tech trails 22 miles south. The sights and unique shops of Copper harbor, Brockway Mountain drive And the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge are a half hour drive north. Calumet and Keweenaw National Historic Park is 6 miles south. 14 miles further south you'll find the town of houghton where the campus of MichiganTechnological University is as well as more shopping and dining. And of course no trip to the Keweenaw is complete without visiting the famous Gay Bar in Gay Michigan a short 12 mile drive away. Don't forget to ask for Jess, the bar manager, and wealth of local knowledge.
