About the property

Historic Colonial Mansion Offers Luxury Suites and more

Mansion Xanadu is a fully restored colonial mansion that has been adapted to receive travelers seeking something more than a hotel room. The private grounds including tropical gardens, a reflecting pond with fountains, paintings, antiques throughout, and a swimming pool have been tastefully brought together within the structure's original unchanged architecture. Most suites feature vaulted ceilings some 25 feet (8 meters) high over the floor below and as guests enter there is an instant feeling of being uplifted. It is in this setting that only six beautiful suites are available which provide up to four persons per suite. Some suites have two bedrooms ideal for travelers with children or older relatives. All amenities such as WiFi, Air Conditioning, Refrigerators, laundry service and free, sumptuous breakfasts are included. Aside from breakfasts those guests wanting evening meals may have something special prepared or even a barbecue by the pool. A tropical open air bar provides informal seating and guests are welcome to play bartender as well.

The staff at Mansion Xanadu is the same each year and found to be very friendly with genuine smiles and available to answer any questions guests may have. As one reviewer in wrote, "The staff is there when you need them and they disappear when you don't." Of the many treasures to be discovered in this amazing gem, past guests agree that the staff is its most important asset.

Many visitors to Granada arrive unaware of how many things there are to do here. Because of this be advised to spend some time as the range of activities in\s very wide. To help our guests here's something special for you. Our guests may discuss and plan activities and tours in advance without a deposit and without penalty for cancelation. This is done in the hopes you will take our word and stay a bit longer. Don't come all this way and then miss it all. You can also visit our website where we feature more information on things to do. Here's a survey....You and your family if you've brought them along can hike through a rain forest to the top of a nearby Volcano, then on the way back take the zip line, one of the very best and safest in the world. On the other hand don't miss the arts and crafts market in nearby Masaya, a 30 minute trip from Mansion Xanadu, and see some truly amazing things madke of wood, leather, ceramics and glass plus clothing and paintings. You can and should bargain. A past guest taught me a trick and it worked.Never ever "ask" the price. Instead, offer what you think it is worth. He also taught me as you make your offer put the amount being offered in the owner's hands. (I say owner because they won't be too pleased if yo give it to an employee.) Anyway, with money in hand the owner is faced wth a dilemma. Its technically already sold! Now the hapless owner has to "buy it back" by rejecting the offer and returning the payment. Trust me. It works. Just be sure to leave a little for them, they work hard too.

Moving along now the city itself has amazing churches. From an architectural perspective you just have to see and visit them all. Some have been fully restored, like Xanadu Mansion. Xanadu is located pretty much perfectly. Central Park is a bit noisy and cluttered with people and such. Xanadu is two blocks away but contiguous to Plaza Convento where you will find the famous San Francisco Church & Convento. The oldest in Granada, it takes up one full city block and Mansion Xanadu sits to the south of this site in is shadow. To our south is the Calzada Mall, which at one time was the main street than ran from Central Park all the way to Lake Nicaragua. Now it is a pedestrial mall filled with nite life after dark and countless restaurants, bars, pubs, pizzerias, ce cream parlors, art stores, hotels and so on.. It is the hub of actiivity for those who didn't bother to plan ahead. Enjoy it but don't get stuck with nothing else to do. In the evening you may run into La Gigantona. This is a creature of a female persuasion. She's 10 feet tall and spins around while accompanied by what by comparison are midgets doing drum rolls and shouting their admiration or disrespect for those in attendance banking on the belief you won't understand that they have just insulted you or someone at another table. She clearly dislikes those who don't tip,. If she becomes a real bore give her a buck and she'll high tail it sooner.

The best thing about Mansion Xanadu is the value. As far as I know there is nothing to which you can compare Mansion Xanadu . It's a mansion. But you only have to rent one suite to enjoy all of it. If you read past reviews presented since 2012 when we inaugurated right up to the present time all seem to conclude two things. One: they will never stay anywhere else in Granada. Two: the Staff is by far Xanadu's most valuable asset. They leave you wishing you didn't have to leave. Currently, see our rates which apply to one suite for two persons. A small charge is added for each additional person to cover the cost of breakfast and housekeeping. If you are traveling in a larger group, please book direct and become a Premier Guest. Premier guests receive free laundry, early check in and when possible late checkout.

Airport transportation: If you arrive by air let us wait for you at the airport. Our contractor provides modern, air conditioned vehicles and will not leave if your plane is late. Important. Cost is about $50 for up to 4 adults with luggage.

Selection of Suites at Xanadu:

The Mandarin Suite accommodates larger groups and features a 2nd floor, 2-bedroom suite with queen bed and two twin beds. It has direct access to a full bath from each bedroom and a balcony that over looks the floor below. There comes with this suite a ground floor suite with queen size bed and full bath. There is a full private kitchen for the use of only the Mandarin, which makes it ideal for 6 persons, 4 on the 2nd floor and 2 n the other suite known as the XiAn (pronounced 'She-on"). The Mandarin may be expanded to a group of 10 persons by adding the adjacent Convento Suite.

About Douglass Hughes

Having traveled most of my life Mansion Xanadu was designed around the comforts and friendliness that I occasionally enjoyed in my own travels. Emphasis on occasionally. It was originally named "Casa Xanadu" but found to be mistaken for a hotel, which it is not. So more correctly its size, location and architecture deem that is was once a great mansion occupied by a wealthy family. Its restoration took 3 years to complete after which it was occupied by myself and family until 2010. In 2012 it opened with 3 suites and later 3 more were added.

Douglass Hughes purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

Why Douglass Hughes chose Nicaragua

Today all places to stay in Granada are reasonably priced. But buyer beware. What a traveler wants is not to feel homesick for the comforts of his or her own home. You came to get away, relax, maybe do some fun things. After a few days you long for place to relax not to sleep. You need to recharge yourself for a few hours. Where? . You have to have a place to come back to when you really would like something like home. That place is Mansion Xanadu.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

We offer high speed internet, refrigerators in each suite, internet TV with news channels and Netflix 24/7. All apartment suites have air conditioning, cathedral ceilings and colonial architecture. Most suites will accommodate 2 adults for a base price of $125 for 2 persons, $19 for each additional person up to four per apartment suite.

Casa Xanadu is a luxurious residence centrally located in the historic district of Granada, only a few steps to the oldest colonial church, Convento San Francisco where Granada's main museum is located. 2 blocks from central park & several other restored churches, museums, workshops. Casa Xanadu is within a very short walk to restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlors, night spots and saloons. Yet we are 2 blocks from the main walking mall known as La Calzada street, close enough to be there in 5 minutes walking yet far enough away not to hear late night revelers.

Notes:
This is a 5 star colonial residence inn located in the heart of the historic district with services that challenge the finest hotels with unimaginable attention to vacation services. In house tour guide Marlene Rivas provides knowledgeable advice and assistance in setting up and reserving tours of Lake Nicaragua, the volcanos and white villages surrounding Granada. She also provides personal tours as well directly from the hotel. The hotel's layout provides for privacy because it is so spacious. The environment is excellent for young people and children who love the play for hours in the pool after returning at the end of the day. If you tire easily of restaurants we provide a wide variety of dinners served in the evening by the pool. Enjoy fresh fish from the lake, chicken, pork and beef dishes plus several pasta dishes if you like genuine Italian cuisine. Our menu comes close to exceeding the most exclusive restaurants in the historic district.

Extraordinary luxury in oldest city in the Americas

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for several days at Casa Xanadu between Christmas and New Years of 2014. We had a lovely time in the wonderful and historic city of Granada. Marlene and the rest of her staff were most accommodating and attentive to our needs. The rooms are quite spacious, beds very comfortable, the breakfasts healthy and delicious and the setting dramatic and luxurious. Marlene was extremely helpful and accommodating while providing information and making reservations for us. This eliminates a lot of stress when travelling in a foreign country and makes for a far more pleasant experience. Casa Xanadu exceeded all expectations and we would certainly stay there on any return trip.

Just what we were looking for...

  • 5 of 5

I have visited Granada over ten times since 2006 and have lived in and rented various homes and hotels throughout the city. Casa Xanadu exceeded all expectations and past experiences with accomodations. This time I was traveling with my fiancé and two married friends. We shared the Shandu and Convento suites over six days.

The women who work at the hotel are absolutely fabulous. Attentive, accomodating, expeditious and always with a smile on their faces. Breakfast was abundant and delicious every day with fresh juice, coffee with warm milk, fresh fruit and around eight different main course options, some Nica style and others American style. The rooms were always clean and tidy ... a treat to come home to after a long day out in the sun. The mattresses were comfortable and the linens top quality ... something I cannot remember ever having experienced in Nicaragua. We also used their laundry service which was quick and excellent. I asked that some of our clothes be hung not dried in the machine, and the ladies happily obliged. The pool was lovely and in the shade and the ambience of the hotel in the morning as you eat breakfast poolside or as your sit and chat in the evening is delightful and refreshing.

Marlene is outstanding. She is truly talented, professional and informed. From my constant emails with her months before our trip trying to organize our schedule to any insignificant issues as they arose during our stay, she quick and effective in answering all questions and resolving all concerns. I would follow any and all of her recommendations and trust her input. She is truly a resource and a delight to work with. She took us on a personal tour of Masaya which was informative and all tour companies that she linked us up with were professional and fantastic. Our friends traveling with us had a wonderful experience thanks to her expertise which, as a regular Granada visitor, made me very happy. Our friend is currently three months pregnant, and the hotel as well as all tour guides went above and beyond to make sure she was comfortably being tended to. She even enjoyed an hour long massage! If there was ever any need that the hotel could not meet ... and they were few and far between ... Marlene made sure we were acommodated in some other way.

It is without a doubt that I would stay at Casa Xanadu during another of my visits. We cannot thank Marlene and her team enough for their excellent service! We had a wonderful experience

Owner's Response: Your description nails many of the features of Xanadu's approach to accommodations. For the few days or weeks that travellers stay at Xanadu, they are visiting royalty. So thanks for letting others know about Xanadu. We very much appreciate it. Good review!

Dream stay in Granada

  • 5 of 5

The Casa Xanadu in the heart of Granada is a wonderfule travelers oasis. Granda itself is a wondrful city, but as every traveler knows, after a long day you look forward to be able to return to a home base and relax. The Casa Xanadu is perfectly located so that you can pop in and out as you please never more than a few blocks from all the sights, sounds and food of the area. The place itself is beautiful, comfortable and private. What really makes it is the owner and his fantastic staff. The staff helped us navigate activities, dining, money changing, food choices and the list goes on. We saw the very best of this region wuth their help and our trip would not have been the same without them. I will be back!
