About Shauna Knutsen

We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, we have two children Cindy and Zane, but only Jayvan our nephew is still at home.

We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation.

We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Shauna Knutsen purchased this house in 2012

Why Shauna Knutsen chose Hawaii

We chose this area since we love the beauty, the tropical rain at night, the Coqui frogs singing, and the area is centrally located to our favorite places! And we love the easy going friendly laid back atmosphere.

What makes this house unique

This house having the private and separate cottage that our Gardener stays in. it allows our guests their privacy while being close enough to take care of things and be there in case we need him for our guests, puts our mind at ease.

We also like the quiet, country feeling so that when you get up and look outside you see nature, you hear the birds, and not the hustle of the city.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Making this charming place available for world weary travelers was a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you for the clean sheets, nice towels, the complete instruction tips on what and where. You will find everything needed here and the best coffee beans this side of anywhere!

The cottage caretaker (Rich) has a good natured presence. I've told all my friends about you and Coqui Cottage. Don't be surprised if some of them beats a path to your door!

Great choice for Volcano Park visitors

  • 5 of 5

A very nice and affordable house close to all volcano attractions. The house was loaded with everything one may need for exploring the volcano park and the lava flow. The owner, Shauna, was great in every respect. Shauna gives great advice and will follow up in a timely manner. Glad we stayed there.

Great place for visiting the Hilo side of The Big Island.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five had plenty of room and really enjoyed using the lanai to play cards one evening when there was a torrential downpour. The house was spotless and well maintained. We stayed at three different properties during our two week visit to Hawaii. This was our only house, the others were condos that we also found on VRBO. Coqui Cottage was exactly as advertised and listing to the frogs and roosters was a nice change. The surroundings are beautiful. We were close to the volcano, hot springs and beaches.

Comfortable and clean!

  • 5 of 5

We drove to the house after dark and Shauna gave excellent driving instructions no problem getting there. It was in the perfect location for our purpose which was to visit Volcano Nat'l Park and view the lava falling into the ocean from the Hawaiian Lava Boat Tour - Fabulous! Shauna is gracious and informative. We are going to stay with her again soon. Thanks Shauna!!! J&J

Above and Beyond!

  • 5 of 5

A very long list of everything that went well would still overlook some details of this fabulous cottage. Really. Clean--very clean. Organized--over the top. Charming--with a capital C. I could go on and on. Actually the owner has gone on and on in her preparation for guests. For example--going to the beach? She has provided fins, masks and tubes for snorkeling. Ice chest. Lovely folding chairs. Toys for playing in the sand for your little ones. Boogey boards. Going hiking? Excellent hiking sticks. Sunburned after your day? Various sunburn relief products. And the list would just continue on and on. I would add, in very large letters, FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS TO THE COTTAGE. My GPS on my phone was more wrong than right, and had me driving on roads that weren't even roads, if they even existed at all!
