About Shauna Knutsen

We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, we have two children Cindy and Zane, and our nephew Javin and he's the only one still at home.

We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation.

We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Shauna Knutsen purchased this house in 2012

Guestbook comments from the owner

Making this charming place available for world weary travelers was a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you for the clean sheets, nice towels, the complete instruction tips on what and where. You will find everything needed here and the best coffee beans this side of anywhere!

The cottage caretaker (Rich) has a good natured presence. I've told all my friends about you and Coqui Cottage. Don't be surprised if some of them beats a path to your door!

Coqui Cottage Stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Coqui Cottage Feb 6-14, 2018. This was one of the most thoroughly equipped VRBOs we've stayed at. Everything you could possibly need was available: flashlights, umbrellas, snorkeling equipment, beach towels, boogie boards, noodles, washer and dryer, first aid supplies, hair dryer, bottled water, cooler, and more. The light and fan switches were all labeled. And, best of all, there was a binder of day trips listing activities in different areas, directions on how to get there, and what you need to take with you!! We seemed to be centrally located for alot of activities. The cottage was decorated nicely, was comfy and very clean (a deal breaker for me). I can't recommend this place enough. The only thing I might recommend adding is a couple of beach chairs. Thank you Shauna!

Clean, comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Coqui Cottage. Everything was clean and well cared for, and the cottage was a nice break from staying in hotels. We especially appreciated having a little extra space and on-site laundry facilities! The location also worked very well for access to the places we wanted to visit -- primarily Volcanoes National Park and some of the gardens around Hilo. Shauna was great to work with and has thought of just about everything you might need. She was also very helpful when I needed an item shipped to the cottage that had gotten left behind earlier in the trip. There are even a couple of binders provided with information and ideas of things to do, including tips and feedback from previous visitors. The weather was a bit rainy, as is expected around Hilo, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Coqui Cottage to friends or family traveling to the area.

The house was just as it was pictured and described. Very comfortable beds! We loved the welcome basket. They provided everything we could possibly need and then some. I have never stayed at such a well stocked house, they have thought of everything. The location worked good for us to explore this side of the island. A hike to the lava and the green sand beach are "must do's"!! The book or activities with detailed descriptions and directions was so fantastic and greatly appreciated!!

Absolutely wonderful place on the big island!

  • 5 of 5

This place is a gem! Wonderful getaway cottage close to Hilo. A quiet rural feel though 15 min to the amenities of Hilo. Beautiful, relaxing interior with the perfect decor. Fully stocked with kitchen utensils-Keurig, microwave, plenty of space to cook if you want. Access to snorkeling equipment and everything you need for day trips. Speaking of day trips, we could not have been more pleased with the notebook of suggested day trips including turn by turn instructions on how to get there. Shauna checked in with us during the trip and even took the time to call grocery stores to see when they were open on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. We can't wait to come back!
