About Shauna Knutsen

We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, we have two children Cindy and Zane, but only Jayvan our nephew is still at home.

We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation.

We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Shauna Knutsen purchased this house in 2012

Why Shauna Knutsen chose Hawaii

We chose this area since we love the beauty, the tropical rain at night, the Coqui frogs singing, and the area is centrally located to our favorite places! And we love the easy going friendly laid back atmosphere.

What makes this house unique

This house having the private and separate cottage that our Gardener stays in. it allows our guests their privacy while being close enough to take care of things and be there in case we need him for our guests, puts our mind at ease.

We also like the quiet, country feeling so that when you get up and look outside you see nature, you hear the birds, and not the hustle of the city.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Making this charming place available for world weary travelers was a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you for the clean sheets, nice towels, the complete instruction tips on what and where. You will find everything needed here and the best coffee beans this side of anywhere!

The cottage caretaker (Rich) has a good natured presence. I've told all my friends about you and Coqui Cottage. Don't be surprised if some of them beats a path to your door!

Best cottage around!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this cottage was the best. We loved how everything was completely organized and fully supplied. The location was perfect for easy drives to just about everything you could want to do. Although there was no AC, we loved having the windows open at night and listening to all the rain storms, and of course the frogs! We were very comfortable here, and will stay again the next time we go to the Big Island!

Perfect tropical retreat

  • 5 of 5

Very clean and well maintained. They provided everything we might need including snorkel gear and torches and saved us many trips to the city . We loved their lush green property with papayas, pineapples and tropical flowers. Shauna was quick to respond to our questions and even took the trouble to mail back something we left behind. Will definitely go back!

Home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for 6 days. The cottage was so comfortable that we have everything what we needed and more. The garden was was keep so relaxing. Inside the openess was so inviting, the kitchen was equip with everything you need . Just open all the cabinets and you will see what you need. The lanai we ate here sometimes for dinner since it's still bright. They have the things you need for snorkeling, boogie boarding. The location is kinda far from the locations you want to go but if you check the books of day trip that the cottage prepare then you can really plan your day. The book really helped us a lot to visit and see other tourist area.

We really enjoyed our vacation on time at the Coqui Cottage.

Better than any hotel or timeshare!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a place that makes you feel right at home, this is the spot. This home has everything you need right at your finger tips as if you were in the comfort of your own home. The accommodations go above and beyond any hotel or timeshare you will ever stay at. They provide everything from shampoo, conditioner, body wash, cable TV, laundry and soap, board games and books for the kids and all of the same kitchen and bathroom items you would have at home.

- Pick up some groceries from the store and keep them in the house, it is about a 30 minute drive into town so you may want them for downtime.

- Occasionally the weather would cause the power on the island in the kitchen to go out, there is a breaker to the left of the kitchen sink, push the button, it'll restore the power.

- Use the books for tips and guides to cool places and just punch them into GPS! We did so much for FREE because of those books that were put together and as a result found even more awesome adventures to go on.

- If you are interested in a scenic, historic, beautiful, memorable experience.... this will be the place to go! It is gorgeous here.

Thank you, Shauna and John!

Delightful house in the country.

  • 5 of 5

OK, the coqui frogs work hard to make you feel welcome. Actually, they weren't very intrusive , and were very interesting.

The house has a lot of space, and would be perfect for a family with small children. The east coast of the big island gets some rain, and the lanai is large enough for children to play in, and secure enough that you would know where they are.The house is well kept, with attention to detail that ensures comfort. There is a delightful garden, which is immaculate and filled with banana and papaya trees, and gorgeous tropical flowers.

The owners were very gracious and welcoming. The coffee and cookies that greeted us were a terrific start to our stay. They were also very flexible with times for checking in. and out

The only downside for us is how far the house is from Hilo. Luckily, we decided to stay at an airport hotel overnight before heading off to find it . It would have been a challenge in the dark !

Owner's Response: We thank you so much for taking the time to share your kind, thoughtful and helpful words. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay, and that you felt welcomed to the Big Island. We hope to have you stay with us again soon, and that next time you will have less rain :) It may be good time since you mentioned the distance from Hilo town to the cottage for me to clarify things a bit more. We are in a natural country setting, with paved roads, the cottage sits on a little over 1/4 acres, with the lots on each side, behind and across vacant. The airport is 11 miles from the cottage about a 20 minute drive ( the closest stores are about 5 mins from the cottage) , and it can sometimes be very dark if you arrive at night when it's cloudy or there's no full moon, so we provide you many landmarks along the way so you won't feel lost, (we're also a quick phone call away) and we like to welcome our guest with the outside and an inside light on to welcome your arrival. So far we have only had 1 guest have any issues with arriving after dark and they just simply put in the wrong street into the innocent mistake :) So we hope this will help any future guests, if you like the natural Hawaii feel with fruit trees and surrounded by nature, then we hope you will enjoy the cottage as much as we do when we are able to get away from all our busy lives and spend a few weeks at the Coqui Kai Cottage. If you have any questions as to proximity, feel free to call, text or email us...we're happy to help! Thank you again, Shauna Knutsen
