About Nora Crouch

We are custom kitchen and bath remodelers and keep very busy in this industry. We love the water and the serenity of nature. Our home in Virginia Beach overlooked a beautiful reservoir where wildlife abounds. Our retirement dream was to find a home like ours in Virginia but smaller and on the intra-coastal waterway in a smaller community where peace and quiet abounds. That the idea of rush hour was that if you listened real carefully you might be able to hear the sound of a golf cart or a lonely car go by. I think I can say we succeeded in that point.

After making our getaway available year round to travelers since 2013, we have decided to move in permanently and open up the home for just 2 months every summer.

so please book early if you are interested as the available dates will go quickly!

Nora Crouch purchased this house in 2012

Why Nora Crouch chose North Carolina

My husband and I discovered Holiday Island while on a trip in 2012. We fell in love with the view from the home and its location midway between two wonderful towns---Edenton and Elizabeth City and part of the city Hertford. We were able to purchase the house and begin the process of creating our retirement paradise/resort. Along the way, our friends were so interested in our project; they asked if they could rent it out for a weekend or week. We decided to make it available year round in early 2013. Holiday Island is not a 'touristy destination'. It is just a wonderful area to relax, take a walk or just sip coffee (or wine). A 181 foot long pier has been built with a 16x24 platform in the middle with a picnic table on it. We do keep our boat there on the lift. On beautiful boating days on the largest freshwater sound in the country, you may like to take a ride with us.. We acquired the lot right next door to the house which now provides an additional 81 feet of sound front privacy. The pier is located inside of a cove. The water is 8-24 inches deep at the bulkhead and about 12 inches deeper at the end of the pier. At the edge of the cove the water is 5 feet deep, once outside of the cove it goes to 15-20 feet deep. The bottom of the cove is sandy with some sea grass. It is a great place to launch kayaks that are provided, or let the children play. The newly acquired adjacent lot has enabled us to add a beach, horse shoe pits, place to play corn hole, bocce or croquet along with a second pergola and palm tree oasis.

We added a beautiful barn to the adjacent lot this past summer which will eventually house a game room and studio.

What makes this house unique

Once you leave the island, the town of Hertford about 15 minutes away, which was chartered in 1758 making it the seventh oldest town on North Carolina. It is a lovely historic town with a pharmacy and a soda fountain counter. There is an art gallery and delightful lunch spots right on the main street.

The Albemarle Plantation is next door to Holiday Island. The public is welcome to dine in their fabulous clubhouse and grill. The food is super and we always feel welcome there! More information about restaurants and activities are available in the welcome package.

In this area, history abounds with Edenton established in November 6, 1712 and Elizabeth City in 1793. The Outer Banks, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and many other towns are an hour to an hour and half away. You can take a day trip to visit the ocean and avoid the traffic inconvenience and high cost of staying there. Of course, the fishing is great here and boating makes the area even more enjoyable. There are four kayaks on the property. You can rent additional boats from Hertford. You can bring your own boat and launch from the boat ramp on the island. The pier has approximately 16-30 inch water level in the summer and you can tie up your boat or PWC there.

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

I was one of 6 former college room-mates who met for an annual weekend getaway--we had an awesome time! The house was roomy with comfortable beds and a large dining room table where we enjoyed catching up. We came prepared to cook/steam our own seafood but the kitchen was well equipped to prepare most anything (and the owner even offered his steamer pot). Our BEST meal was eaten outside on the picnic table located halfway down the dock--nice breeze, beautiful sunset, and the relaxing sound of gentle waves washing below the pier. Our early risers enjoyed morning coffee in the sunroom overlooking the Sound.

With swimming, kayaking, and snoozing on the hammock/beach chairs, there was plenty to do on the property but we couldn't resist a trip into Edenton. We rented paddleboards for $5/hr (a real bargain), sampled Orange-ades from the fountain at the local pharmacy, and feasted on the local chili, cornbread, and sandwiches at Nothin Fancy Cafe. (We also had great pizza at Tommy's before our arrival.)

The owners have really tried to think of everything. They had lots of information about the local area and a binder to provide all the details needed to enjoy the property. Alan checked on us the first day and even returned on Saturday to give us a boat tour of the Sound and River! We could not have asked for a better weekend and will definitely consider a return trip!

Great Vacation Spot!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a fantastic vacation. The house was even better than it looks in the pictures (and it looks incredible). We had so much fun crabbing and fishing from the pier, even though we didn't get any keepers. The house is furnished with everything needed for a great vacation. We really liked the location and the towns of Edenton and Hertford were lovely to visit. Thank you so much for making this such a memorable vacation.

Great secluded, quiet, picturesque location

  • 4 of 5

The house is very clean and comfortable but the best part is the beach and the sound. The week we were there had excessive heat advisories every day, so doing any in the middle of the day was oppressive, but early mornings and evenings out back by the sound were the best. Although Edenton and Elizabeth City are only 30 minutes away, there isn't much to do unless you venture out about 1.5 hours or so. That said, the quiet and peacefulness of the home and the sound is just what our family needed on this vacation.

Relaxing waterfront home

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at this location. The house and property are just beautiful and relaxing. The photos here don't do the place justice. The town of Hertford and surrounding area are very sleepy. Limited restaurants nearby. But all and all this is a fantastic place for young and old to enjoy the beach. Only downside we could think of is-- there are no curtains in the upstairs bedrooms and the sun is very bright early in the morning. We recommend this property to anyone! We had 2 adults 60+, 2 adults 30+, and 2 kids (4 and 1).

Quiet Getaway

  • 4 of 5

My family and I vacationed at this home at the end of June and had a very relaxing time. The home was exactly as it was pictured on the website, and the home owners were great to work with. My daughter (9) and I also took a class with Nora which she enjoyed immensely. The things we enjoyed most were the kayaks, catching the crabs and clams, and the sand area to play in. My teenage sons enjoyed the Pirates Den! We also drove to the Outer Banks one day and Virginia Beach another day. They were each about 90 minutes away. I would have given this place five stars if not for the construction for two mornings and workers wondering around he outside of the house. We would definitely return again.

Very relaxing and quiet stay!

  • 5 of 5

We vacationed here with two other families and really enjoyed our stay. The home owners provided all the water toys we needed - kayaks, boogie boards, life jackets, floating chairs, etc. There were also plenty of beach and lawn chairs, umbrellas for the beach and even cup holders on the beach! We enjoyed checking the crab trap throughout our stay. We caught quite a few, but we released them! In addition, the house was well-equipped with modern amenities. No detail was left untouched.

We intentionally left an inflatable floater behind for the future guests to enjoy since we don't have a need for it.

We also hope the owners did not mind that we left the 1000-piece puzzle intact on the dining table! Our son put that together during our stay and we did not have the heart to dismantle it when we left!

Located in a residential wooded community. 15 minutes from the main roads (Route 17/Ocean Highway). Quiet area on the sound (54 miles long, part of the Intercostal Waterway) with 150 feet of water front with beautiful sound views. A great place for long walks in the neighborhood or a bike ride.

There is a brand new public recreational center located behind the bank across from the garden center and senior center on Harvey Point Road on the way to Route 17/Ocean Highway. From that intersection it is only 5 minutes to downtown Hertford, Edenton or Elizabeth City 15-20 minutes.
