Secluded Monterey Bay Beach Front Home. No shoes required.

Bedrooms 3
Property type townhome
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bath private town-home on the beach.

This is our family owned beach get-away.

The 3 bedrooms include a master with a king size bed and an attached bathroom. From the master bedroom there is access through a sliding glass door out to the ocean front deck. From the bed you can see/hear the waves breaking on the beach. The second bedroom is a simple room with a queen size bed. The third bedroom has been used as the 'kids room'. It has a Queen sized and a twin bunk bed with a twin trundle bed under the bunk. 4 kids usually sleep in this room but adults could certainly bunk here as well, the bunk beds are very sturdy.

The second bathroom has a shower/bathtub.

The living room area has a large couch for relaxing, a wood burning fireplace that gets a lot of use at night (wood included). We have Dish Network, 50 inch flat screen, DVD player (with movies), and a sound system for listening to music on your digital music player (iPhone). We have several board games and books which live in this area.

The Kitchen and Dining area is off the living area. The dining table can accommodate 8 people. The view from the dining area is incredible, if feels like you can touch the water. You can literally see whales spouting while eating cheese and drinking wine from the dining area. The kitchen has everything you need to cook the fish you can buy from the world class Phil's Fish Market down the road.

There is a washer and dryer in the hall closet.

The front deck has a closed in area surrounded by pine trees. We have a Weber and a Smoker for BBQ. There is a nice fire pit for late night fires and smores for the kids...or adults. On the side there is a hammock for relaxing above the pine trees. The nice thing about our home is that we have no neighbors to the north of us, ours is the first unit, so you have unobstructed views of the dunes from here, very quiet and private.

The back deck gets the most use. Views as far as you can see, you can sit out here for hours watching the surf, birds, and whales if you are lucky.

There is a two car unattached garage which is used as a toy holder. There is plenty of outdoor parking, room for at least 4 vehicles. In the garage we have a ping pong table with paddles and balls, a beach cruiser for taking a ride, and a bunch of beach toys for both kids and adults.

There is a recreational facility about a 5 minute walk, or 1 minute drive if you are lugging a cooler and toys. It is only open to owners or renters of the Monterey Dunes. It has very nice tennis courts, bocce ball court, basketball court, shuffleboard, swimming pool, hot tub, sand volleyball court, and bathrooms with showers and changing quarters. The recreational area is literally cut out of the dunes, you are surrounded by beauty.

About Steve Whiteford

Our family moved to Los Gatos in 1977 due to a job transfer. I retired in 2004 as VP and Controller of The Cooper Companies, Inc., a NYSE listed providor of contatact lenses and womens' healthcare systems and devices. We are very family oriented - Love to have reunions here, go kyacking in the Elkhorn Slew, go whale watching etc.etc.

Steve Whiteford purchased this townhome in 2004

Why Steve Whiteford chose Castroville

Monterey Dunes is: Remote, beautiful, close to Monterey, Bayonet golf course, etc. Kids can walk from the house about 50 yards to the beach without having to cross any streets. The view theough the glass wall of the dining room is stunning, particularly the sunset over the water. You can pretty much do whatever you'd like, including nothing! There is a wonderful game area that includes tennis courts, bocce court, pool, hot tub, etc.

What makes this townhome unique

My wife is in a wheelchair, so there are ramps installed to allow easy access/egress. We have redocorated recently, including setting up the garage as a game room - Ping pong, etc. We have no neighbor on our right. Just beautiful dunes. It will never be built on. We have a gigantic owl living in a pine tree on our property. We have WIFI and a new flat screen HD tv.

Fabulous rental

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at the house with 4 friends for the weekend & it couldn't have been more perfect. The kitchen was well equipped, the living room had a great, cozy area to hang out, beds were super comfortable, and there was an endless supply of firewood to keep the fireplace going. The house is *right* on the beach with lots of windows/glass doors facing the ocean for great views. The owner was accessible and very welcoming. I would highly recommend this house and would definitely stay here again.

Needs some work

  • 1 of 5

We had a wonderful time but the place needs some work. Painting, general upkeep of old broken and rusted fixtures in bathrooms need to be replaced, new caulking instead of the moldy stuff, etc. Fireplace was red tagged but owner graciously gave a small refund for that which was nice of him. The bedroom closets are full of disorganized toys, baby stuff, sleeping bags, drawers in dressers looks like they still live there and need to be cleaned out. All these things in such a nice location make the house seem shabby and outdated. Cleaning needs to be better. We needed to put a towel on the refrigerator to store food because the top was so dirty; blinds in each room was filthy and LED candles didnt work at all. Place has a generally musty smell especially in the bathrooms. This could be a really nice place with some tlc to make it worth the cost.

We had everything we needed to enjoy ourselves. Plenty of linens, dishes, etc., beautiful view.

  • 4 of 5

Loved the location, very peaceful. Very neat and organized, easy access, great directions. Excellent response time when calling regarding a question. Maybe a few suggestions that might help, in the master bathroom,(repair or replace the rusty heater cover, faucet handles, shower molding). We definitely loved staying there, and plan to do it again! Thank you so much, Raymond (Paul) and Kate

Perfect location, condition of the condo needs immediate attention, filthy!

  • 2 of 5

The location of our condo was perfect. The condition of it was disgusting. I’ve never stayed in a filthier house. There was mold in both of the shower basins, tile and shower curtains. The carpets were dirty, the couches were stained , the Venetian blinds were dusty as were the lamps and furniture. And there was a roach in one of the bathrooms . We spent way too much money to have stayed in a condo with these filthy conditions. It truly was disgusting. We have traveled for 30 years and have never encountered this, anywhere.

Owner's Response: I am flabbergasted by this review, as is my cleaning service. I respectfully take issue with the veracity as well as the tone and tenor of the stated comments. I invite prospective guests to weigh this review in the context of the many four and five star reviews we have received. Having said that, and just to be 100% sure, I have directed my highly regarded cleaning service to ensure that our house is particularly well cleaned for our next guest. Further, I will personally inspect before they arrive. We take great pride in our vacation home and the many favorable reviews we have received, which has led VRBO to invite us into their good renter program. .

Your secluded hideaway for a never-to-be-forgotten vacation. Each year the Monterey Peninsula offers hundreds of festivals, tournaments, shows, races, tours and other very special activities.

There is so much to do. Play some of the world's finest golf courses. Watch the whales from your oceanfront home, surf fish on the beach and watch sea otters at play. Browse in the antique shops of Moss Landing. Visit the spectacular Monterey Bay Aquarium and the magnificent 17 Mile Drive at Pebble Beach is a must for everyone.

Monterey Dunes has 120 individually owned homes stretched out over a mile of beachfront on 125 acres of colorful sand dunes. Homes are 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms—some have private hot tubs. Some are available for rent—they are completely furnished.

The recreational facilities include 4 tennis courts, swimming pool, saunas, hot tub, sand volleyball court and basketball. Monterey Dunes is one of California's best kept secrets.

Sun, sea and solitude. Undisturbed beach as far as the eye can see. A spectacular Monterey Bay setting, enhanced by choice amenities planned in harmony with the environment. This is Monterey Dunes. So perfectly secluded, yet so close — just a few minutes — to the rich cultural and entertainment life of the Monterey peninsula.

Come join us in this magnificent setting of natural sand dunes hundreds of years in the making. Our beautiful oceanfront home is nestled in this very fragile sand dune environment. But please, please never walk on the sand dunes. Our plant life at the dunes is always in a life and death struggle. The beautiful and colorful plant life helps hold the extremely fragile sand dunes in place. Since the Salinas River has been dammed less and less sand is available to maintain the dunes. Without the plant life hundreds of years of sand could disappear in less than a decade.

We must preserve the sand dunes for all future generations. People and nature working together should be able to preserve the dunes forever. Please — never, never walk on the dunes — we're grateful for your help.

Each home has a boardwalk to the beach. On the beach you can hike, run, play, fish, build your sand castle—or just do nothing. Magnificent Monterey Dunes. A place you'll always remember — an experience you'll never forget.
