About Martin or Lorraine Wibberley
We live in the Welsh borders, but have been walking in The Pyrenees on vacations for the last 25-or-so years, enjoying the wonderful unspoilt scenery....so 11 years ago we decided to buy a holiday home in the French pyrenees...& we have spent many, many wonderful days in the Vallee de Lesponne ever since...& we let our house to holiday-makers who also love this region of France.
Martin or Lorraine Wibberley purchased this Cottage in 2003
Why Martin or Lorraine Wibberley chose Beaudéan
This is a charming renovated barn or 'grange' in a very beautiful valley in the central Pyrenees...the scenery is stunning & the opportunities for walking, cycling, skiing, bird-watching, studying the wild-flowers must be amongst the best in Europe! If you like the natural scenery of what is often described as 'the last wilderness in western Europe' as much as we do, then you are sure to love this valley.
What makes this Cottage unique
We found in this house a beautifully renovated old barn with all the comforts & mod cons...it stands on the valley floor, close to the villages of Lesponne & Beaudean, with restaurants, bars & shops nearby, & with the calm of an ubspoilt valley all around...definitely the place to chill out & relax, leaving the hustle-bustle of the modern world behind for a while. SPECIAL ATTRACTION FOR 2016... STAGE 7 OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE ON JULY 8 FINISHES AT LAC DE PAYOLLE...VERY NEAR TO THE HOUSE, WHILE STAGE 8 ON JULY 9,FROM PAU TO BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON GOES OVER THE COL DU TOURMALET...ALSO VERY NEAR TO THE HOUSE

A simply gorgeous property in a wonderful location
A family of 4 (with 11yr old twins) we stayed here in August 17, and had a wonderful week. The property is one of best we have ever stayed in - and we have been to France multiple times. It was extremely well equipped, comfortable and clean. The building it is attached to is just an old barn, so you have the place to yourself with very (almost no) passing traffic on the lane. It is incredibly peaceful - one of our requirements for a break - and for vast majority of the time all we could hear was the mountain stream. This was one our favourite things about the property. You could throw open the main bedroom windows at night and go to sleep listening to the rushing of the river, which was deeply relaxing and therapeutic. Like all new areas, you need to spend some time finding out the fun things to do, but by the end of the week we had explored and found lots to do (climbing zip wire places, lakes, caves, walks, spa etc). One of the most amazing features of the house, is the most comprehensive and detailed file of local/regional walks - which was so helpful and inspiring. If you are coming here for a walking holiday, this has to be the best house you could think of! And one of the wonderful things we recommend is tackling a big walk (e.g. Lac Bleu - just stunning and knackering) and then going to the nearby Spa - Aquensis, to sweat away the aches and pains). We will be back!

It was lovely to read your enthusiastic review of your stay at our place in the Vallee de Lesponne.
It's particularly wonderful when you see someone make a booking hoping for peace, tranquility, facilities, comfort & fabulous scenery...& then finding exactly what they were looking for.
It sounds like your stay in the Pyrenees left you refreshed & with wonderful memories of a fun vacation. We would be very happy to welcome you back some time soon.
Best wishes Martin
STUNNING VIEWS with peace and tranquillity for all. We stayed there because it is nice to have the comforts of this lovely house that has all the facilities we need, including a log burner, which is perfect for those chilly evenings. A few logs are given free but if it is particularly cold, more are available at a very reasonable charge. No light pollution so we found it easy to sleep and clear nights give lovely stargazing opportunities. We have stayed there twice and go, particularly, for the great skiing at nearby La Mongie/Bareges/Pic du Midi etc. with other ski resorts also in close proximity. This area is great for scenic walks (see the helpful book at the house) and we enjoyed them so much on days we where not on the piste. ( we are not normally Walkers/Hikers) Walking from the property directly, the trails are abundant with stunning surroundings. Do NOT miss this opportunity! Mac & Christine, Potters Bar, England.
Beautiful house, beautiful valley and beautiful weather. No 34 was a restful and restorative place in which to stay quite apart from the abundance of walks on the doorstep and the interesting places to visit further afield. Possibly the best holiday home we have stayed in.
Dear Linda & Chris
So glad you had a great, restful holiday & were able to enjoy the house, its location, the walks & many beautiful places to visit.
Come back soon! Martin.
Well appointed property
A very comfortable bed and the whole property was comfortable. There are some nice touches and some slightly less than generous touches. We were unfortunate enough to coincide with an unusually cold and wet period so had to have the heating on frequently, this is a restored barn and so fairly damp when it rains. We were charged a small extra amount for the electricity and logs not enough to make a fuss about and to be fair the details do say that other than high season this might happen, but enough to feel a lack of generosity. In addition the owners have put in satellite internet. There is a sheet in the property that explains this and says to use it sparingly, surfing the internet and checking emails are, it says, okay but downloading and streaming games are not. Since we never do the latter and only the former we were happy with this arrangement until we were charged 15.00 for a nine night stay. I would advise future users to be aware that daily internet use is likely to incur charges. The local restaurants were mostly closed and the owners favourite has closed down so the local choice was not great. The book of walks is thoughtfully composed but we found them to be fairly challenging so would also recommend the paths from the Col d'Aspin. If you are a walker, or cyclist this property should suit you very well.
We are sorry that you did not have the best of weather during your stay in the Vallee de Lesponne- of course, this can happen and, for you, it seems to have put a serious dampener on your enjoyment. Normally September weather is lovely but, unfortunately, we can't guarantee it!
However, your charge of a lack of generousity seems unfair...for electricity, extra logs & extra internet use you were charged only £21.09- which isn't really a lot. Also, we do not accept that because it's a converted barn, the house is damp- its construction & conversion was completed with top-quality materials & it is fitted with an air-circulation system which is always on- so as to avoid any condensation problems in a house that has excellent double-glazed doors & windows.
We thank you for your 4* review & we are sorry that the weather & restaurants disappointed you.
Fabulous tranquill place to stay.
We stayed for 1 week at the beginning of September. Emma met us and directed us to the Gite. The Gite was beautiful, very clean and comfortable. The valley is unspoilt.
Whether sat out side or with the windows open you have the sounds of the river in the valley below.
The Gite is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. We used the fire a few nights that we stayed in which was lovely.
The area is great for all sorts of activities we predominantly went to cycle and walk. For cycling we had great access to iconic cols and the walks from the door and a short drive away are unforgettable. Martin and Lorraine have left a load of information including walks and maps that we thought was a great touch and gave us inspiration.
Not far from the Gite is Chez Gabrielle we were looked after very well. Home cooked food and locally brewed beer worth a visit.
We were surprised by Chez Brenda in Campan. Another great restaurant with fabulous pizza.
Whether your going away for a week away to relax and put your feet up or an adventure packed week the Gite is a great base. We would love to go back soon.
...and, of course, you will be very welcome to come back to the Vallee deLlesponne in future. You obviously packed in lots of cycling & walking & we are so glad you enjoyed Chez Gabrielle & Chez Brenda.
Best wishes & thank you for your review, which we appreciated
wonderful base for walks - very comfortable and tastefully decorated
Just back from a week-long family holiday - lots of great walks from the doorstep, a really beautiful part of the pyrenees and a lovely peaceful setting. The children loved the nearby Aya Parc Acrobatique, we all enjoyed a dip in one of the mountain lakes and Bagneres has lots of old-world charm. On our arrival we were met by Emma at a local jam boutique - she then guided us to the cottage, which was really helpful as it is wonderfully tucked away. Just enough wifi to keep the teenagers happy and the kitchen was very well equipped. All in all, this is a place we've tagged as somewhere that it would be lovely to come back too - ideally for longer, as we barely made a dent in the very exhaustive book of walks the owners provided. Highly recommended
Great to read your perceptive review of your holiday in the Vallee de Lesponne...you clearly understand the appeal of our house & the natural holiday you can have in this lovely part of the Pyrenees...if you are able to come back for longer next time, we would love to welcome you back.
The house is situated on the valley-floor of the beautiful Vallee de Lesponne, about 4 km.south of Bagneres-de-Bigorre; 15 km.north of the skiing resort of La Mongie & about 30kms.from the Spanish border. All around is the unspoilt landscape of the Pyrenees-with crystal-clear streams & lakes, woods & magnificent mountains. Many of the Pyrenees most famous locations are within a short drive- the Cirque de Gavarnie, the Col de Tourmalet, the shrine at Lourdes, the castle at Mauvezin, the Medous caves...all are nearby. The area is a haven for outdoor activities year-round and for a rich & varied wildlife-wild flowers, birds & deer abound...& all of this is topped off by the availability of local Pyreneen gastronomy & Gascon wines!
Other Activities: canyoning, rock-climbing,sight-seeing
