About John de Bruin

Nadine and I (John) are retired now for the second time. We completed a career in Aerospace in 2003 retiring from the Hughes Aircraft Company. The Hughes Motto was very similar to that of the TV show "Star Trek" i.e. to go where no man has gone before. John was involved with the design and deployment of infrared space systems while Nadine pursued a career in Real Estate. As a child, John had developed a love for the land and cows and upon retiring, we purchased a Ranch and raised grass fed beef, organic pork, chicken and eggs for our community. Farming is a hard life and all consuming and we elected to retire a second time to pursue some of the activities we had put on hold in favor of farming. We still live on our ranch in Lompoc, raise our own meats and enjoy our grandchildren as well as hosting guests from all over the world in our vacation rentals. We love the country lifestyle and are blessed with having our daughter and 3 grandkids live on the ranch with us. We live approximately 6 miles from Hilltop and are available for resolving any and all issues in short order.

Why John de Bruin chose Santa Barbara County

The Shady Oaks Ranch is an amazingly unique property. Upon arriving, you feel a sense of peace and tranquility permeate your whole being. It is like being transported to another world or dimension. Complementing this sense of tranquility are the views and vistas of Buellton, the Santa Ynez Valley and the surrounding mountains. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Cachuma Lake or Gaviota State Beach are excellent places to go picnic and hike. Enjoy wine tasting? The valley is filled with amazing boutique wineries as well as some that are quite size-able and offer a great variety. Shopping? Enjoy history? Visit the two Missions established by the original Spanish Settlers. Visit Solvang for a real shopping experience from clothing to knick knacks to the world's softest socks. Hilltop at Shady Oaks Ranch provides you with a means to escape and yet have a diversity of activities to complement your time away from the hustle and bustle.

What makes this farmhouse unique

When Nadine and I first saw ( I really mean experienced) this property we were awestruck. We just could not leave. Located on 31 acres with means to hike up and down, challenged us to experience the entire range of views as well as the natural habitats of the majestic oaks and wildlife. You literally feel transported to another dimension. Can't say that enough. Come and experience it for yourself.

Great views, great value.

This property is ultra private, with great views all around. John was very accommodating, and the house was stocked with more supplies than most others. Worked great for our group of 8 adults meeting for a training camp. The driveway is about .4 miles long, a bit rough, and not super easy to find on some GPS, but the directions you'll get are very good. The house isn't ultra modern luxury, but it's clean, well maintained, and the owner is very intent on making sure all of your needs are met. Thanks again, John!

Quality Family Time in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six adults and two young children (ages 3 and 5) had a fantastic time staying at the house. There was room for all of us to spread out and relax. We celebrated Thanksgiving here and really loved the big, round dining room table. The setting is beautiful and we hiked a few times up the little hill behind the house.

We had a wedding in Los Alamos and rented this house for the weekend. John was a wonderful host and the house was just what we needed. We had three families staying in this house and it was perfect. Thank you, John!

The property was beautiful, clean and well cared for. The Hilltop view was breathtaking!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time @ Hilltop. The property was gorgeous, a great place to relax and gather. John was great at communicating with us before hand and very accommodating. The property was clean, well-cared and had everything we needed for our stay!

NOTE- if you rent this property, follow John's direction to Hilltop instead of GPS. The GPS instructed us into the nearby winery which ended us in the middle of nowhere as the destination.

Pictures don't do the view justice!

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic property! Being unfamiliar with the area, we were initially caught off guard by the ascension up to the property - it definitely deserves it's name of 'Hilltop'. The property itself was very accommodating to the needs of two families (four adults and four children ages 4 months to 7.5 yo), and suited us nicely while in town for a friends wedding.

Buellton has all that you need, and gives a nice counterpoint if you happen to be in town during Danish Days in nearby Solvang.

The Hilltop at Shady Oaks Ranch is located just minutes from the Santa Rita Appellation, a region first discovered by Richard Sanford to have similar soil and weather to the Burgundy region of France. Since Richard built the first winery in the area, many others have sprung up and we are now famous worldwide for our Pinot Noir's and Chardonnay's. There are many ways to visit the wineries from self guided tours to arranged tours to wine tasting rooms that have an excellent selection of the local wines without the need to travel.

In addition, lake Cachuma is a wonderful resource for fishing, picknicking, and guided nature tours. Other features include Ostrich Land, Firestone Brewery, the Chumash Resort and Casino and a myriad of fine eateries to delight anyone's tastes. In addition, two of the orginal Spanish Missions created here in California are within 20 miles.
