About John de Bruin

Nadine and I (John) are retired now for the second time. We completed a career in Aerospace in 2003 retiring from the Hughes Aircraft Company. The Hughes Motto was very similar to that of the TV show "Star Trek" i.e. to go where no man has gone before. John was involved with the design and deployment of infrared space systems while Nadine pursued a career in Real Estate. As a child, John had developed a love for the land and cows and upon retiring, we purchased a Ranch and raised grass fed beef, organic pork, chicken and eggs for our community. Farming is a hard life and all consuming and we elected to retire a second time to pursue some of the activities we had put on hold in favor of farming. We still live on our ranch in Lompoc, raise our own meats and enjoy our grandchildren as well as hosting guests from all over the world in our vacation rentals. We love the country lifestyle and are blessed with having our daughter and 3 grandkids live on the ranch with us. We live approximately 6 miles from Hilltop and are available for resolving any and all issues in short order.

Why John de Bruin chose Santa Barbara County

The Shady Oaks Ranch is an amazingly unique property. Upon arriving, you feel a sense of peace and tranquility permeate your whole being. It is like being transported to another world or dimension. Complementing this sense of tranquility are the views and vistas of Buellton, the Santa Ynez Valley and the surrounding mountains. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Cachuma Lake or Gaviota State Beach are excellent places to go picnic and hike. Enjoy wine tasting? The valley is filled with amazing boutique wineries as well as some that are quite size-able and offer a great variety. Shopping? Enjoy history? Visit the two Missions established by the original Spanish Settlers. Visit Solvang for a real shopping experience from clothing to knick knacks to the world's softest socks. Hilltop at Shady Oaks Ranch provides you with a means to escape and yet have a diversity of activities to complement your time away from the hustle and bustle.

What makes this farmhouse unique

When Nadine and I first saw ( I really mean experienced) this property we were awestruck. We just could not leave. Located on 31 acres with means to hike up and down, challenged us to experience the entire range of views as well as the natural habitats of the majestic oaks and wildlife. You literally feel transported to another dimension. Can't say that enough. Come and experience it for yourself.

Wonderful Central Coast Sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

We had a mini-reunion and stayed at the house for a week. It was pleasant, clean, well equipped and we enjoyed the thoughtful touches. Furniture and bedding were comfortable and everyone had space to get together or have quiet time as they wished. The view is fantastic, and we liked the easy access to Buellton and the freeway. One note about the house layout - the kitchen/dining are upstairs next to the master suite, but on the other side of the house from the main living area. For us, this was great, as we could rise and shine and have our coffee without waking the rest of the house. It made it a tiny bit less convenient to barbeque or share snacks, since we were going up/down the stairs and through the house.

Gorgeous, spacious house with incredible views!

  • 5 of 5

I loved staying at this beautiful property! There was plenty of space for me, my husband and our three adult children. Huge windows let in lots of natural light. Quiet and serene grounds. The beds were so comfy, we felt like we were sleeping on clouds! Only a four minute drive to restaurants, this house is amazing! We would stay here again in a heartbeat. An absolute gem!

Hidden Treasure

Our family enjoyed property for a long weekend. Although off the beaten path, it is actually really close to civilization. You get the best of both worlds. We highly recommend a stay here. Thanks John & Nadine.

Secluded hilltop with not a single neighbor under a canopy of stars - location was fabulous. The house was spotless, clean, and well maintained. (Clean sheets, soft towels, nice bedding.) Highly recommended!

Heavenly Hilltop

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently stayed at this lovely and unique property to celebrate our daughter's wedding at Sunstone Vineyard. It was the perfect spot for our multi-generational group of 10. The beds and living space were comfortable and the kitchen, with its spectacular views, was an ideal place to share morning coffee and plans for the day. The outdoor areas were also wonderful and provided a beautiful setting for a little party we hosted with our out-of-town friends and family members who traveled from the East Coast for the wedding. Buellton, Solvang and Los Olivos are all close by as are many great wineries. In addition to Sunstone, we visited Demetria, Byron, Cambria and Firestone - each unique and fun. John was the perfect proprietor who greeted us when we arrived and even sent a few things to us by mail that we left behind. We certainly hope to get back to Santa Ynez and would definitely stay at the Hilltop again!

The Hilltop at Shady Oaks Ranch is located just minutes from the Santa Rita Appellation, a region first discovered by Richard Sanford to have similar soil and weather to the Burgundy region of France. Since Richard built the first winery in the area, many others have sprung up and we are now famous worldwide for our Pinot Noir's and Chardonnay's. There are many ways to visit the wineries from self guided tours to arranged tours to wine tasting rooms that have an excellent selection of the local wines without the need to travel.

In addition, lake Cachuma is a wonderful resource for fishing, picknicking, and guided nature tours. Other features include Ostrich Land, Firestone Brewery, the Chumash Resort and Casino and a myriad of fine eateries to delight anyone's tastes. In addition, two of the orginal Spanish Missions created here in California are within 20 miles.
