Quiet, private, beautiful cabin in the woods on the lake - kayaks and more included!

  • 5 of 5

The serenity and privacy of this beautiful cabin and lake are nothing we have ever experienced before. We enjoyed time as a family - a mom, a dad, and two sons around the age of 20 - and time alone.

In addition to swimming in the clean waters of the lake, we kayaked. We relaxed on the dock and everywhere, read on the swings and everywhere. While playing air hockey and pinball in the basement, we saw a bear cub right outside our window! We played games and ate breakfast at the lovely game table on the screen porch. We strummed guitar and listened to jazz by the fireplace, which is also on the porch. (Yes, the porch was a great hangout.) Listening to the loons was music to our ears too.

Besides the bear and the loons, a beaver popped up and surprised us while kayaking. Ospreys were gliding and diving for fish, a red squirrel scurried around, a Common Merganser Duck family swam by, and warblers we don’t see in southern Minnesota flittered about. The plants from the tiniest at our feet to the tallest high above our heads were wondrous too.

We did venture out for a hike on Caribou Trail and for a lovely meal at the Trail Center.

The weather was near perfect for our stay, 3 nights in comfy beds. It was cool to warm and sunny to rainy, but even the rain was beautiful. The only bummer was that clouds prevailed at night so we didn’t get to see the stars which was a huge want of one of our sons. (Guess we have to stay again, don’t we?!)

One important note: The mosquitoes were not nearly as bad as we had feared. They were totally manageable and didn’t interfere with our enjoyment at all.

Oh, and another: We brought too much. There are plenty of games, books, and movies. Unless you are already reading a book or have a particular game or movie you feel you must bring, I’d leave them at home.

This was our first VRBO experience. I can't imagine dealing with anyone easier and nicer to work with than Karla. She and this place will be a hard act to follow. I can tell you one thing for sure, I won't be staying in a hotel or big resort ever again unless I absolutely have to.

Great Place

  • 5 of 5

Very good stay. The owner was great to work with, and called to be sure we arrived safely and had everything we needed. The home was clean, very nicely decorated (it was more like a home than a rental cabin), and had comfortable beds. Everything was in good working order, including the grill. We really enjoyed the very easy to use fireplace on the porch, the dock, and the air hockey table downstairs. But the porch was probably the family favorite. We saw a beaver and loons at the dock during our stay, and the chipmunk put on an entertaining show from the kitchen window. It's a really nice and relaxing place.

Tips:

1. If the lights seem dim, check the wall switch…some of them have a tiny dimmer slider to adjust brightness (not like anything we’d ever seen, but perfectly functional once you realize they are there)

2. Read the information package you’ll get carefully as it will prepare you well for an enjoyable stay

Beautifully appointed.

We had an amazing time at this home. We spent much time on the dock swimming, kayaking, and fishing. The beds were amazing, and we loved the super cool art weaving project in the yard. We look forward to coming back in the years to come!

Serene Setting

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful stay at this cozy cabin on Leo Lake. Lots of unique touches in the decor -- bedrooms had cute themes (Moose, Bear, Pine Tree) with accompanying adorable stuffed animals (well the Pine Tree animal was a river otter!). Truly comfy beds with down comforters! Senior members of your party might want to "dib" for the master bedroom -- the stairs to the upstairs bedrooms were on the steep side!

The best part was the quiet and serenity of the place -- Leo Lake was beautiful and just the right size for an afternoon kayak paddle. We enjoyed watching the "super moon" rise over the lake and reflect in its waters from Heartrock Haven's dock. "Shermy" the squirrel and his birdie friends paid us several visits entertaining us. No loon or moose sightings this trip, though.

Lots of good hiking trails nearby and hearty vittles at the Trail Center down the road. Fall colors were beautiful as well. A great place in which to decompress. Heartily recommend!

Beautiful Cabin in Beautiful Setting!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just got back from our stay at Heartrock Haven and we could NOT be happier with what we signed up for! Not only was the cabin unique and beautiful, but the amenities that came with it were icing on top of the cake! We were a small group of 4 adults and we all got to have our own spaces throughout the cabin for relaxing and reading books! We had a great time out on Leo Lake with the canoes and kayaks! We got to fish and even caught a rainbow trout! We did a lot of hiking on the nearby trails which gave us spectacular pictures with breathtaking views. We have stayed at many cabins in the north woods before, but this one felt the most like home! Would recommend to couples, families, groups of friends, ANYONE! The wildlife was abundant, especially "Shermie" the squirrel who was always entertaining! Do yourself a favor and find some time to book your north woods getaway at Heartrock Haven! :)

Heavenly lake, beautiful cabin, lots to do or you can do nothing at all!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is beautiful and roomy and has great spaces for everyone to either be together or have their own space & has the creature comforts with the beauty of the wilderness. It's a great place to clear your head, catch up on a book, get outside, relax by the fireplace, watch critters, hike, kayak, connect with friends or family, cook up great meals, laugh, listen to loons, fish - so I heard & saw many right off the dock.

If you have snorers, there are many sleeping options to make everyone happy. We were lucky to see some falling stars and a bit of the Northern lights, my first time. I highly suggest getting out on the dock and star gazing/Northern light searching. There's lots of room on the dock or sit on the benches & listen for the beavers that live off to the left as they search for branches at night. They start coming out around 6, so you can still see them too. They are pretty unconcerned about what you are doing though & one swam right under me/the dock as I stood there capturing sunset photos. They may make a big noise with their tail slaps on the water, don't be scared though, I found it to be a fun and safe weekend get away & I truly didn't want to leave.

The kayak trip around the lake was a great adventure, with fun photo opportunities & one lap around was perfect. I have a little kayaking experience but it has been quite a while, I suggest less windy days for it though as going against the wind can be a challenge for smaller ones or less experienced folks. It is equipped with all you need for kayaking or canoeing, cooking, games (air hockey was fun!) etc. Oh, & there are some great hiking trails near by too!

There are fun places to go like Hungry Jack Lodge, where you can have an adult beverage, food, chat with folks & the friendly staff & Wifi if need be. You can go to the also very close by Trail Center for a great meal! So much you can do, I can hardly name it all. The flying squirrels are fun to watch up close at night from the porch & the red squirrels, birds & chipmunks by day at the feeder. I suggest staying for at least a week as you wont want to leave after three nights, believe me, I know....

The owners are really lovely people, I can attest to that & I am being completely unbiased. They want guests to enjoy their slice of heaven as much as they do & are sharing their favorite place in the world with you. It was an experience I will never forget & feel truly honored. This was my first time & hopefully not my last.
