Most refuse is recycled, including on-site composting. The villa contains low voltage lighting throughout. Wood utilised for heating is supplied from local renewable sources including owner's own woodlands. Whilst currently electricity comes from the local grid, the adjacent Lake of Sant'Angelo is dammed to provide a renewable source of electricity to that grid. The owner has also installed solar panels to provide electricity to the local grid. Guests are also encouraged to support the local community by visiting local attractions, restaurants, bars, shops and other local facilities.
Children: Children are welcome. However we do not have facilities such as a cot and high-chair for babies. The stairs are steep and of marble with no stair-gate. The property is not really suitable for children under the age of five years old.
Thanks for a lovely holiday. We've enjoyed the house and all the places we've visited - followed up the tips and advice, but still haven't seen everything yet! Our own discoveries include the Nature Reserves at Serranella and Punto Aderci.
Oh, and the restaurant at Bocca di Valle is well worth a visit. All the very best.
Stewart and Ruth have an exceptionally lovely home which is enhanced by their gracious hospitality and helpfulness. Our stay in Abruzzo was an unforgettable experience. We felt right at home and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful surroundings as well as the delicious fresh produce from Ruth's garden. This was our first time in this part of Italy, and we were delighted by the wonderful small towns and friendly residents. One of our favorite meals during our trip was at the restaurant suggested by Stew, and we're so glad we got the opportunity to meet Sarah, sample her wonderful wines and enjoy the spectacular view! We will surely return and definitely stay with our new friends, Stew and Ruth!
Casa del fiume, realy is a river cottage, with a river, mountains, lake not far away, stunning scenary, Stew and ruth wonderful hosts, making us welcome, nothing too much trouble. The cottage was clean, had everything that was needed when we were out Stew even lit the log fire so we returned to a welcoming warm cosy home, we felt part of the family. We were there for only a few wonderful days, we want to return but next time stay alot longer. I would realy recommend this property Stewart and Ruth. Arrivederci. Mario and Susan
This place is really charming. It's half of an old house, very nicely - and recently - converted and stylishly furnished. It has some pleasant outside space, and, because of the thickness of the walls and the orientation, a kind of naturally air-conditioned effect: if you leave the shutters closed during the day, it remains beautifully cool. Stewart and Ruth are extremely welcoming hosts, who care a lot about their guests' experience at the house, and are very enthusiastic and informed about the area. Abruzzo feels very undiscovered compared with Umbria or even the Marche, and there are some fabulous things within the immediate area of the house. There's a great walk up a truly spectacular gorge at Fara S. Martino (if you don't mind climbing over landslip debris to get to it), and a wonderful Roman site on a hilltop nearby (Iuvanum). More prosaically, there's a very good wireless connection at the house for those who find it hard to leave their work behind.
The description of Casa del Fiume is very accurate minus the smells, sounds, heat and sense of peace. The property is the nicest we have ever stayed in and benefits from the owner's artistic style and attention to detail. Ruth and Stewart went above and beyond to provide the best possible customer service and that greatly enhanced our stay. We would highly recommend a holiday here. It is the kind of place you will want to return to whenever possible.
The location is ideal for exploring the many small mediaeval towns of this region, walking in the Majella mountains, basking on empty beaches of the 'Trabocchi Coast' and swimming in the warm Adriatic sea (40 min drive), downhill skiing / snowboarding on the empty slopes at the ski resort of Roccaraso (40 min drive), cross-country skiing on 30 Km of runs through beech woods at Bosco di Sant’Antonio (30 min drive), or merely relax with a book on a lounger with your feet dangling in the cooling water of the Aventino river (2 min walk).
This area is part of what is known as 'the green lung of Europe' - being next to the Majella National Park. Abruzzo has always been a favourite holiday destination for discerning Italians, due to its diversity - dramatic scenery, mountains, sea, blue-flag beaches, gastronomy, art, history and culture - literally something for everyone. But more importantly, Italians say it’s like the Real Italy of 50 or more years ago - unspoilt and unpretentious.
