About Owner / Property Manager

I purchased the house in 2007 and immediately initiated a large scale renovation and remodel project. My inspirations were the Tuscan kitchens I saw during a year in Italy and my desire for a fun and loving space for my two children. The kitchen is the social and architectural heart of the house. Houses of the early 1900's did not focus on large social spaces. I decided to remove the partition between the dining room and kitchen to create a large social space. The kitchen is vast and very 'gourmet.' You can cook while talking to family and friends seated at the breakfast counter or in the dining room. I also created what the kids and I called the 'gourmet' bathroom of the second floor. It features a large multi-fixtured shower complete with body jets, a heated tile floor and a Japanese toilet with heated seat and bidet functions. Finally, we created a 'kid recreation zone' in the daylight basement which has a ping pong table, large sectional couch and home theater. Over the years, we noted that the 'kid recreation zone' became favored by the adults as much as by the children. br br

The Ravenna Farmhouse has facilitated great joy for my family and many others. I hope you enjoy your stay.

What makes this house unique

The Ravenna Farmhouse has served families since the early 1900's. 10 years ago I received a letter from a local antiques dealer He had found a letter written from the owners of the house in 1918. It was long, and beautifully written with the grammar of the time. Most significant to me was the author's (mother of the family) comments on the great flu pandemic of 1918. She was relieved that no one in the family had succumbed to the flu but there were many in the city who had. I later found out that she and her husband were on the building committee of the historic University Church on the corner of 15th Ave NE and NE 50th St, a few blocks from the house.

The neighborhood is a wonderful example of how good urban living can be. You can walk to a variety of small businesses, the UW Bookstore, and movie theaters in the University Ave zone. You can walk to Whole Foods in the nearby Roosevelt District. And you can walk down 'secret stairs' or via the streets to the University Village, the premiere shopping mall of Seattle. The University of Washington is also a very short walk and is one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. It also hosts a variety of entertainment events. The neighborhood food options are truly unlimited. For Chinese food, you can have a world class experience at Din Tai Fung at the University Village. For Mexican food, Aqua Verde near the UW Campus not only has top quality food, you can also rent a sea kayak there and kayak on Lake Union. For a romantic evening, our favorite local place was Pair, which I would describe as French Tapas place.

My personal favorite aspect of the Ravenna House experience was walks in the neighborhood to Ravenna Park, just a few blocks away. It is a Ravine in which you can bike or walk surrounded by lush green trees. Both ends of the park feature newly renovated playgrounds.

Reviewer Comments:

Overall we had a very nice stay. The house is as advertised. Nice big kitchen, comfortable beds, nice deck. Good space for an adult family of 7 - parents, three kids, two wives/girlfriends. It's nice to have communal space to socialize in the mornings. The house is a little tired cosmetically but that doesn't affect the quality of our stay. Two things I would mention to prospective renters to consider - not necessarily to avoid staying here but just be aware - the windows in the bedrooms and most of the main floor of the house are inoperable. In the winter that's fine, but in the summer, without central air, not having operable windows was really disappointing. I'm from Portland and am fine in this climate without a/c but definitely take advantage of the overnight and early morning outdoor air for cooling and could not do that here. It got quite stuffy in the house. Also, we were in town for a wedding at the Aquarium. As mentioned I live in Portland and have been to Seattle dozens of times over the years. Traffic in the city has gotten considerably worse. I did not think the location would be an issue for us but it turned out to be a downside since our activities were centered around the waterfront and traffic was atrocious. If your plans keep you located around the U District or even the east side (easy access to 520) this is a fantastic choice.

From the pictures online, I thought this was absolutely a beautiful older home with space we could enjoy with family for my son's wedding in Seattle. Boy was I surprised to be totally amazed at it being even BETTER! The updates especially in the kitchen made it not only a wonderful space to have nice visits but it was so clean and spacious I wish we could have stayed longer!

The house is spacious and is convenient to the U of Wash campus. It has two parking spots out front, which is a big plus in a parking-challenged neighborhood.

Reviewer Comments:

We were there with two of our grown children, their spouses and a teen-age grandchild. and there was still a bedroom with twin beds leftover. The house has an enormous and servicable, if not entirely practical, kitchen. We had friends, their two children and one's dad over for dinner one night and all but the children could sit at the table. An excellent choice for a lot of people. We loved the location and both Fran's chocolates and Din Tai Fung are in the very nice University Village shopping center nearby.

Reviewer Comments:

All in all, this home was great for our 5-day family vacation. Loved the large gathering spaces in the kitchen, dining room and living room. Bedrooms were adequate and beds were comfortable. My only complaint is that the kitchen was missing some essential supplies, which should be provided: dish soap, dishwasher soap, hand soap, and large garbage bags. Also, there were not enough cups and bowls for the number of guests. Salt and pepper shakers were there, but nothing in them. These were just small inconveniences, but resulted in extra trips to the store. We loved our time in this home and will use it again.
