There is a finished basement self contained where I stay. You will have the upper portion of the house to yourself.
1911 bungalo just blocks from Mississippi ave, where you can enjoy music, antiques, coffee and tea shops. The home is minutes from pearl district, downtown, rose garden and the convention center. It is also just blocks from public transportation.
The house has hardwood floors, period furnishings with 2 bedrooms downstairs, one bedroom with a queen bed and one with a full. Upstairs bedroom has 2 twin beds and a little bonus room. (In order to get to the upstairs room you must go through the room with the full bed). The home has cable television and wi-fi for your convenience.
I am a proud native Portlander. I grew up here in the N/NE Portland I went to Grant High School and graduated from Portland State. I have watched this neighborhood blossom around me. I bought this home 16 years ago and have lived in it off and on for the last 12 years.
Mark Hewitt purchased this house in 1999
I bought this property because I was worried that if I didn't get a peice of the neighborhood I grew up in, that it was going be gone.
I grew up in the Historical Irvington neighborhood here in NE Portland and have always loved older turn of the century homes. Pretty bay windows, built ins and hardwood floors. There is something cozy and comforting in these older homes for me.
Thanks, Mark. Our family very much enjoyed our stay at your house--it was perfect! This was our first time renting a house, but thanks to how well things went it won't be our last time!
Mark's house is a beautiful space with hardwood floors, tons of natural light, and lots of space to relax. There's a cute backyard for lounging and ample space for three couples. (though only one bath).
We found Mark and his partner Bethany to be helpful, flexible, and very friendly.
The location is on the east side of the river - a short distance on public transit or via car from downtown.
The house is also VERY close to the charming Historic Mississippi corridor, and it's about a mile or so from the Alberta Arts district which is a wonderful place to shop, eat, and explore.
Overall our stay was perfect, and I would definitely come back!
Mark's home is in a wonderful location. It had everything we needed during our stay, was very clean and well-maintained. Access to transportation is great. The bus drops you off on the same block as the house when coming back from downtown and when going to downtown, the bus stop is on the next block. Super convenient. Mark was available if we needed anything and very accommodating. We had four women in our group and everyone had their own bed. Speaking for myself, my bed was very comfy! Going through the bedroom was no big deal. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends. Thanks again, Mark, for letting us stay in your home.
My 3 girlfriends and I just spent a great week at Mark's lovely, light-filled home. The rooms are good size, and the beds are comfortable. Mark was available and accommodating. We relaxed, cooked meals, and used the home as a base to see Portland and environs. The many shops, restaurants, bars and cafes just down the street are a great attraction. We were car-free so the #4 bus and our $26 7-day transit pass easily took us downtown and to many great Portland neighborhoods, and the airport, too. We highly recommend this home!
House was clean and we had plenty of room. Kitchen was equipped enough for us as we mostly wanted to taste Portland! Location was great and walking distance to the TriMet - light rail. Plenty of restaurants are withing walking distance as well as shops. The coffee at the local coffee shop was the bomb. Owner lives downstairs, but we felt like we had all the privacy we needed. Beds were firm but comfortable. Great place to stay!
Mark's home was so comfortable, and he was very accommodating to our needs. The location is great with public transportation, restaurants, and coffee houses near. I highly recommend sitting out on the porch with a glass of wine and relaxing at some point during your stay.
We very much enjoyed our stay in Mark's beautiful home. I was hesitant to rent a home with the owner staying below, but my concern was silly. Mark and Bethany were around and available should we need anything, but we did not. They were easy going and quick to respond. The house is well equipped with all things to cook and do laundry (although we did not cook as there are many lovely places to walk to for food). The beds are comfy and the rooms are very large. The 5 adults in our party had no trouble with the one bathroom, which I was originally concerned about. The wifi is speedy which is a big bonus for our group. Do be aware that the 3rd bedroom is accessed through the 2nd bedroom. Not a great setup but part of the charm of an old home and very workable.
The neighborhood is very walkable, although in December it was very cold, so we did not walk as much as one would during the warm months. Gravy is a great place for breakfast, but go early. The wait can be long. BarBar next to Mississippi Studios is a good place for a burger, fries and beer. Lots of interesting shops nearby too. Be sure to check out Paxton Gate. Really odd store with taxidermy and gifts. Directly across from the house is Victoria, which Mark says has only been open a few months. Victoria has good food and a beautiful bar. Eat mac and cheese with the punch of the day. Less than a block away is Albina Press Cafe. This could not be better for me, as the espresso was fantastic and enticinglyA close. If you are one to enjoy the recreational marijuana of Oregon, Nectar dispensary is about 3 blocks away and offers a lovely selection.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay in Mark's very comfy home and hope to return again during warmer months. The most notable thing about Portland for us was how nice everyone seems to be. Being from the south, we miss the hospitality, which is hard to come by in CA. The people of Portland are very welcoming
This home is in the Mississippi neighborhood, close to numerous restaurants, bars, and music venues. There is a Coffee shop (Albina Press) just a half a block away. Prost is also a popular bar specializing in German beer with amazing food carts surrounding it. One of my favorite spots is Mississippi Pizza also on Mississippi Ave. Williams Ave and Alberta St. - Good food, shopping, art and character unique to Portland. Google these streets to get a flavor. Mississippi Ave begins 3 blocks from the house. This home is also just 1 mile from Downtown and the Pearl District.
