Memorable Family Thanksgiving Trip at "A Sea Dream"

  • 5 of 5

Julie, who is the owner of this home, was so vey accommodating from the moment I reached out to her to inquire about her home. She worked with me to ensure that I was happy with the rental terms, even allowing me to bring two dogs (I decided to leave them both home) but thought that her gesture was very kind. The view from this home is just spectacular! The back of the home has just been updated with new windows and we had such a clear view of the ocean, It also looked like the deck was recently updated. The home was very spacious and fit our family of 13 perfectly with plenty of room to spare. We had a couple of beds that went unused as that is how spacious this home is. The kids slept in the bottom floor room which is just perfect! There is room for 6 kids and they very much enjoyed having their freedom from the adults and we enjoyed the quiet upstairs while they were having a fun time downstairs. We used the hot tub only once and it was very nice. The kitchen had everything and anything needed to cook any type of meal including Thanksgiving! I don't recall the last time I saw a kitchen so stocked! We brought our BBQ with us, but Julie had one at the property and even provided the propane, next time the BBQ is one less item we need to bring with us. The kitchen table, held all 13 of us, we had to pull over a few extra chairs, but we loved that we were all able to sit at the same table each night for dinner. The fireplace in the living room allowed us to relax even more while enjoying the comfortable couches. Nice TV in living room, along with cable and WIFI in the house which is a huge deal when you have several kids.

Great location, beautiful view from deck but windows filmed over, safety and health concerns

  • 2 of 5

We arrived a little after 3:00 and the owners were still in the home finishing up the clean-up. They seemed like nice people and it was nice to chat a bit with them. The layout of the house was great for our family with 5 kids, 8 adults and a dog. One of the main selling points for me was the supposed great view of the beach from inside the house. Unfortunately the windows were coated with salt and dirt from broken seals. The owners said they had the windows but had not had them installed yet. The view from all the rooms with windows on the seaside were obscured so there were no great views as advertised. Luckily, we had beautiful weather and could get out on the deck and on the beach a lot. Some of the issues a previous reviewer had mentioned have been fixed but others have not. The railings on the inside stairs are still quite wobbly and there is a gap my 3 year old granddaughter could have fallen through...really scary! There is new deck flooring on the main deck but there is a large gap between the boards and the house. The doggie gates are still about useless. The chairs on the deck outside the master bedroom are not usable. The mesh fabric on one of the lounge chairs was torn off on one side and the others looked dry rotted. The tables and chairs otherwise were fine. The grill came as promised with gas which was nice and worked well. It was filthy though and we didn't find a brush or grilling utensils. The downstairs rooms were musty but I guess that should be expected at the beach. Some of the overhead lights didn't work (tried the bulbs with no luck). The washer and dryer worked well. Mid week, the owners informed us men would be coming to repair a leak in the roof around a vent in the master bedroom. The occupants of that room had not wanted to tell me that it was leaking after some rain. Luckily we did not have a lot of rain because there did appear to be leaking still after the men had done their "repair." Much to our disgust, the rats are still there. There is a big hole in the floor next to the sliding glass door which may be an entry point. They ate holes in baby bottle nipples, peanut cans, avocados in a deep glass bowl on top of the refrigerator, our dog food bin, bag of coffee, our cooler, a plastic bin we had food in and more. Ants were quite a problem as well. This house has great potential but needs lots of work.

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry but you did arrive 30 minutes early at 2:30 PM not 3PM as you posted and you walked on the wet floors after being told the house was not ready. Unfortunately the new windows were installed in Nov, 2016 and not during your stay as it is something that requires a lot of work and cannot be handled on a Saturday between guests. We are always improving the property and had planned on installing new windows at the end of the season. We also installed a new deck and beach walkway and replaced living room furniture with brand new sofas. There was a small mouse trapped and removed immediately during your stay of which we sincerely apologized. We could not find the gap inside the stair railing as you mentioned? The main deck decorative molding between deck and house is now installed. Thanks for letting us know about the side deck chairs which have all been replaced, I only wish you would have told us during your stay. It's a shame that you could not find the many grilling utensils we have in our very well stocked kitchen & we do provide a gas grill with gas tank for our guests however each guest is responsible to keep it clean. A quick firing up the flames quickly burns off any residue. A roof leak was repaired during your stay however you were not accommodating and you refused men to enter and I had to reschedule them only after reminding you that you have to allow us to make repairs. I can't believe you mention musty smell yet you were not cooperative with immediate repair of leak during your stay? Also your wet towels and bathing suits were dripping all over the floor in kids bunk bedroom. It was disappointing that you left the house very dirty & that you wrote such a hurtful review.

Million dollar view

  • 5 of 5

My husband, our three kids and family dog had an amazing vacation at "A Sea Dream". The views are spectacular and we basically had the beach behind the home all to ourselves. We have a special needs son and the convenience to be able to come inside when needed was essential. The home is lovely and has ample space. The owners were very accommodating, friendly and communicated perfectly...not too much and not too little. There is shopping, mini- golf and restaurants but it's not overwhelming. The home was well stocked...among our favorites a gas stove with griddle and a waffle maker. AND DONT FORGET THE MILLION DOLLAR VIEW! Our family will never forget this vacation full of blessings, fun and bonding. Thank you, Julie and Ken!

Owner's Response: It makes us happy to know this vacation meant so much to you and that "A Sea Dream" was able to accommodate your family with special needs son! We're glad you enjoyed the million dollar view with the new sliding glass door we recently installed and we plan to replace all windows by end of this season as well for an even more amazing view! We hope that you enjoyed the new living room leather sofas & chair with recliners also the new main deck and walkway. God bless you and your family! Take care, Ken & Julie Ash

A Sea Nightmare

  • 2 of 5

Emerald Isle is fantastic. The beach and water were fantastic. But be warned, the pictures of "A Sea Dream" do not accurately portray the condition of this home. This rental home has been neglected and you will be disappointed. I could write multiple pages of complaints and supply lots of details but I’ll get straight to the point with a concise list of problems with the place:

- Deck needs major repairs. Rusty nails sticking up, loose/rotten boards, and loose railings

- Rodent problem (rat traps in the house, and we found a rat in the gas grill)

- Water damage in many spots in the house. Excess moisture on the bottom floor

- Roof leaked water into upstairs bedroom while we were there

- Dryer does not work, most likely due to obstruction of vent

- Loose stair railings inside

- Mold in the showers and sewer odor in downstairs bathroom

- Outside shower has rotten boards and exposed electrical switch with no face plate

- Mildew and rotten animal odors in the bottom floor. Air fresheners used in a pathetic attempt to conceal odor.

- Dog gate that was advertised is in tatters and not functioning

- Hot tub worked but the cover was all busted up and needs to be replaced

- Carpets and floors were disgusting and in need of cleaning

- Insufficient smoke detectors. No carbon monoxide detectors

- Cannot see the beach from the hot tub as advertised

- Ant infestation

- Screen door in bunk room was missing handle and could not be opened

- In general the house is just beat up

This house could be nice but the owners have evidently neglected the place for many, many years and they don’t seem to care. In my opinion, as someone who owns rental properties, this house should not be rented to guests in the current condition as it has considerable potential health and safety hazards. I strongly advise you to find another place to stay.

The only reason I gave two stars for Overall and Experience were because Emerald Isle itself is very nice and the beach is nice. If the review system would have let me, the place would have got zero stars.

Owner's Response: We take great offense to her insinuating that we are misleading, that we have neglected our property and that we don't care is ridiculous! Yet the very next guests loved the house so much they are going to return in 2016 doesn't make any sense! For This guest to be able to state that my house is a health & safety hazard and to tell people to book another property is slanderous to our reputation and our business which we take very personally. You only contacted us about a roof leak which turned out to be condensation drip from a/c in attic. I'm sorry we can't say it was a pleasure meeting you since you yelled at my husband that you didn't want to be disturbed during your vacation yet wanted us to fix leak? You demanded a refund & threatened to leave a bad review & we NEVER heard from you again until this bad review as promised -You mention 3 times in 3 different comments about bottom floor odor downstairs bath, bottom floor again it's all the same. Apparently there was a leaky pipe to the right of the dryer next to the bath you mention unbeknown to us until after you checked out. It was a very easy fix had you told us. The faint odor in laundry room was the wet sheetrock which has now been repaired -We do not advertise dog gates a previous guest must have left it behind. We do have Fabulous ocean views throughout the house and on hot tub deck but do not advertise view from sunken hot tub as you mention -We have installed new smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors at the beginning of the season sorry I don't understand your comment? -We began replacing 1/4 of the main deck with new deck boards and plan to finish as soon as time allows with our busy rental season. We are constantly upgrading the property for our guests to enjoy! -We purchased & installed new LG washer & dryer 2 weeks prior to your arrival. You had removed the dryer lint tray & had so much sand in the dryer, it's a miracle it didn't break or cause a fire! -Hot Tub cover has been ordered, door handle repaired & outside shower electrical plate replaced. I wish you would have told us about these minor issues that we could have addressed immediately during your stay! -We deliver the house very clean for your check in and I'm sorry to say that you were the dirtiest guests we've ever seen! You left all windows open, dirty dishes, garbage/food everywhere, sticky countertops, spills on carpet, moved furniture, soiled towels & ripped arm of sofa. You need to be on Guest Blackball list!

Wonderful week at the beach!

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a great time here, four families with kids between the ages of 2 to 19. We loved being so close to the beach and having all the comforts of home. The short walk to the water made it easy to come and go without it being a project, we'd set up chairs and umbrellas in the morning and leave them up til the end of the day. We did have a set of walkie talkies that worked out really well for calling people for dinner etc, plus we had almost constant funny conversations with them so they were well worth it. The house is very well kept and accommodated our large family gathering. Loved (needed) two full sized refrigerators and the huge dinning table. The views are amazing from the living areas, decks and most of the bedrooms. The only issues we had were with the deck needing some work, had to make sure the little ones wore shoes up there and we could have used more hot water. I wasn't surprised we kept running out with so many people but I would recommend those tankless hot water heaters for a future upgrade. The owners were very helpful and responsive when we had questions.

Owner's Response: We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay at "A Sea Dream" property! The view are really amazing! We appreciate your suggestions and we've already started replacing the main deck as you could see from the new deck boards 1/4 of the way done. We plan to finish most of the deck as soon as possible and finish by end of this season. We've already begun to look into Tank less water heaters as we strive to keep up with the latest technology. We hope to see you again! Julie & Kenny Owners
