The Little Blue Cabin is Adorable and a Hidden Treasure

  • 5 of 5

Little Blue Cabin is adorable. Very clean and fresh. All comforts of home. Have visited a number of times. Owners so accommodating and easy to work with. They even let us use their private beach and dock in town for our kayaks and to swim. Great cabin for families or with a group. Private, peaceful, quaint....even a a creek in the back we so enjoyed. Very short distance from town making our stay easy. Town store offers everything you might need for groceries. Our family looks forward to another visit at The Little Blue Cabin next summer! This a five star for sure.

A great peaceful place, yet close to town!

  • 5 of 5

I have been to the Little Blue Cabin a number of times and have found it to be comfortable, clean, convenient, and affordable! It is a nice large home big enough for the family. There are three bedrooms, a full bath, large kitchen (well stocked) and a large living room to gather in. There is a bonus bedroom and a half bath off of the attached garage which is GREAT for additional guests! This house is great in the winter and in the summer (I have been there during both) The garage is large enough to store several snow mobiles and is right down the road from the main snow mobile trails!! SO convenient!! This is an excellent value!! It is not a new home, but it is a nice home!! I plan to be back!!

Let me also mention that the owners are ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID people!!!!!!!! ....even offering their private beach on the bay for your kayaks and swimming!!

Not what we expected

  • 1 of 5

My husband and I were part of the guest list for the Sea Kayak Symposium last July and I agree with Linda W.

We slept in the garage bedroom and I immediately had to wash the bed spread because of the bugs. Because there was no air flow in the room, we never needed the additional bedding, but I was very disappointed in the room. In fact, I'd rather have been in a tent. The floor in shower in that bathroom was also very soggy and need repair. While the home is furnished and there were plenty of dishes, we were surprised no dishwashing detergent was supplied. We were warned to bring our own towels, I would also suggest you bring your own bedding. I'm a rustic traveler accustomed to outdoor environments, but I thought at this price we were going to have better accommodations. I won't be back.

Owner's Response: We the owners of The Little Blue Cabin review all responses. We consider all responses carefully and take them seriously. Yours is the second response from the same group using our cabin during the 2015 Kayak symposium. To address and clarify your comments: The Little Blue Cabin is professionally maintained and cleaned on a regular basis. All bedding is washed after each guests stay. Our cabin is situated among some trees, it is not unusual to have a occasional bug. Prior to renting, when reading our website the towel situation is addressed. In the initial correspondence our caretaker's name and phone number was provided should you need anything during your stay. Our caretaker never received a call. This is our first experience with these kind of reviews after nine years of guests returning year after year. We kindly offered a free week to your group to help correct your negative experience, which was declined. We take great pride in making sure The Little Blue Cabin is in great shape so those that stay have a wonderful setting for their time spent in Grand Marais. Best regards, The little Blue Cabin owners

You get what you pay for...

Our rental of the Little Blue Cabin was a less than positive experience. My interactions with the owner prior to the rental (during Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium July 15-19, 2015), led me to believe it would be great. She was friendly and even offered in communications prior to our arrival to allow us to keep our sea kayaks on her private beach in the harbor. I declined because, while that was a nice gesture, it is much more convenient to leave them on the public beach where classes meet and our boats have always been perfectly safe there.

We were required to rent for a week even though we only needed the house four nights. It was inexpensive enough that we didn't mind. Payment was required in full six weeks before our rental. It was deposited immediately. Also required was a security deposit that I only received back following 2 email reminders and 19 days after leaving the rental in slightly better condition than we found it.

Our biggest concern with the rental (there were 7 of us), was the insects that we killed daily in the house. I killed at least one insect every time I used the bathroom and daily in my bedroom - mostly earwigs and some large ants. The bedroom in the garage had a number of dead insects on and in it upon our arrival, requiring the bed be stripped and all linens washed before use. One evening I rescued a friend's travel toothbrush from the main bathroom counter where two earwigs were curling up in the case. Yuk. I pulled a spare blanket out of the closet one cold evening and found it had dead insects on it. Other concerns included the noisy and uncomfortable beds that are covered with heavy plastic. While I appreciate the concern for keeping mattresses clean, there are less noisy and uncomfortable options available. The home has two bathrooms, but no one used the garage bathroom more than once because of it's condition: evidence of water damage, flooding of the floor with every shower, the shower floor is spongy as though the flooring beneath is rotted, and the insects were much more abundant in the damp environment of the bathroom. Additionally, we needed to purchase basic supplies that we usually have in a rental...paper towel, toilet paper (they left four rolls), garbage bags, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, and hand soap. I attempted to contact the owner twice during our stay (phone and email) with no response and we were not given caretaker contact info To address concerns in a timely manner.

Owner's Response: Dear guest, It is quite perplexing as to why anyone would remove their first review and demote us to a one star. The Little Blue Cabin has been a rental for a long time, about nine years, and we have had very happy quests. Our home is professionally maintained on a regular basis. It is very clean and comfortable. We tried to reach out to you and offered you a free weeks stay, however, you declined. The bathrooms are very clean and in fine working order. We do not know what you mean about the shower floor. If the shower curtain is outside of the shower stall of course water will leak on the floor. It must be kept in the shower stall when bathing. All of our beds are protected to keep them clean and sanitary. Not one person in nine years has mentioned or complained of the protective bed coverings. All of the bedding is completely washed after every guests stay. Our home does not have a "bug" problem as you portray. As with any home, anywhere, there are occasional 'bug" that get in. Our caretaker is very meticulous about cleaning and there were no "bugs" in our home that was cleaned before you arrived. As to our caretakers contact information. You were given our caretakers name and phone number in writing. Again we apologize. Best regards, The Little Blue Cabin property owners

Spacious home; plenty of wildlife in the area

  • 3 of 5

We were welcomed by a family of 5 deer, much to the joy of my children. Very spacious home; plenty of room for a family of 6 and snowmobile gear. There was a pretty bad odor throughout the house; this may have been mainly to a bunch of garbage bags in the garage. Room set-up interesting; 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom was in the attached garage. Ok for older children; wouldn't suggest for family of young children. Remind caretaker to put on hot water; some people may not know how to do this themselves. Since there is no cable tv, bring videos to watch. Gas station in town lends them out for free. Very nice town/people. No wi-fi at the house; drove the kids nuts but I didn't mind it. Bar in town has wi-fi.
