The beachfront and view were awesome. The fishing was great. We caught perch and walleyes.
On arrival, the cottage had a very musty odor. The well water was stinky and orange. You will need to bring your own bottled water for drinking The cable /Tv did not work as per directions, but if you turn on the TV first, then use the remote to turn on the cable box, they will work. The kitchen was older and "well worn". The tile floor was cracked and pitted. The stove had 2 burners that didn't work, and there was no markings as to which knob worked which burner. The knee wall in the upper loft was very low, and could be a fall hazard. The front door is sealed shut, and would present a hazard in case of emergency. The lock mechanism on the patio door does not work, so the cottage cannot be locked up when you leave. There is no shower for the 1st floor. You will have to shower outside. Not much privacy here. The windows are older and falling apart. Some can't even be closed. We had an aggressive dog come after one of our kids. She jumped into the car just in time. I asked Jeff to let his neighbors know we didn't need their dogs chasing us. The parking is limited to only 4 cars, so if you have more, you will have to park them down at the main road, or take them to the boat launch site at Bingham. Lisa personally explained to me that "occupancy of 10" meant only 10 people could be on the property at any one time. We had planned to have guests over to enjoy the lake on the Sunday after our wedding event, but this was ruined by the "occupancy of 10" rule. This was a big disappointment for us. We would like to come back to this area next year, but it won't be at this place
Property is great location on end of sandy beach in between Leland, Suttons Bay and Traverse City. Great hard packed sand beach in shallow water just like review says. We stayed here with friends and our newborn baby and had great time. For a few days we got hit with huge storms which exposed some issues with property. Windows need to be replaced, some of them barely work or not at all, which was issue when storm hit in middle of the night. Trash also needs to be removed. There are two 55 gallon drums on side of home which were filled in a few days, so it started piling up. It would be nice if someone stopped by to say hello and remove trash. And make sure to know only shower is in bathroom upstairs which was not the cleanest. Bed downstairs must shower outside or fire up this huge old gigantic 70s era whirlpool tub which our friends never did. But good time overall.
This was a beautiful home and setting, and it fit our needs very well. Our son got married at Ciccone Vineyard and we were able to host several friends and family here. We had rented a pontoon from Sunset Water Sports which was super-fun. The home was clean and the furnishings are lovely. We had a fire in the fire pit nearly every night. The sandy beach was great. We would love to come back for just a vacation sometime.
This property was absolutely the best fit for our family. We had three grandchildren under five with us as well as uncles and aunts, brothers and sisters. There was enough room for us to sleep, eat, and hang out without getting on top of each other. The house was clean, appeared to have new carpeting, and the beds were comfortable. It had lots of available seating both inside and out and was exactly what was expected based on the photos. The outside was fantastic as well with the fire pit, large grassy area to play ball, and of course the lake which was ideal for the kids to swim in because it was very shallow for about 40 feet out. The owners came by several times and were especially welcoming and helpful. I would highly recommend this property to a large group or family.
Our family loved this house! The Traverse City - Lake Leelanau area is very beautiful no matter what time of the year it is. This house was just right for our family of 5. We have 3 young boys and it gave us the space we needed, and when we had guests over (a family of 4) we still had the room to be comfortable. I have worked for a famous Michigan family for 20 years in their lodging division and I only like to stay in 4 or 5 star hotels. I know what goes into providing an enjoyable stay. So when it comes to hotels my kids are a little spoiled. However staying in someones beloved home is very different. My kids would rather stay here than any fancy hotel, because it felt like we were staying with a member of our family. Oh by the way this was our 1st experience renting a house and the bar has been set high. We hope to be back here again when we visit this area.
Willow Villa is the best location on Lake Leelanau, a southern facing property getting both sunrise and sunset views. Travel from your private dock on your boat and head up to Leland's historic fishtown to shop then have a great meal at The Cove.
Spend a day just playing on your private beach. There is 178 feet of frontage with a perfect hard sandy lake bottom. You can spend it swimming, water skiing and tubing. Take a morning cruise kayaking along the lakeshore, if you don't have one , we have 2 you can rent for a day or a week.
Want to spend the day napping in the hammmock listening to the waves, no problem. Located on 10 acres down a private road with very little traffic. Relax under the willow tree and read a good book. After you are energized, a family game of volleyball in the yard or bring your bikes for a leasurely ride or vigorous workout on Leelanau's famous road bike routes. Check out the TART trail, a fairly flat paved trail for bikes, roller-blades or joggers that was made on the old railroad tracks, you can go from Traverse City to Suttons Bay, unforgettable beauty along the way! Groomed in the winter for cross country skiing too.
Downtown Traverse City boasts fabulous restaurants along with the Traverse City State Theater (the action spot for the film festival) and The National Cherry Festival. We have a folder of menus you can browse through before setting out. Some of our favorites are Apache Trout Grill - a delicious meal with a view on Grand Traverse Bay; Blue Tractor - best mac & cheese ever; North Peak - great brewery in Traverse City; Stella's - Italian in a unique setting; so many to pick from! Downtown streets close on Fridays during the month of August for a gathering in the streets and numerous and unique vendors offering items for sale and multiple groups entertaining the celebration of summer. There are also farmer's markets for great fresh produce and locally made products almost every day of the week either in Traverse City or Suttons Bay.
Want to explore Leelanau County? A wine tour will take your breath away with the beauty of the country side. When you get back to Willow Villa, sit around a lakeside campfire in one of the adirondack chairs to roast marshmallows and wind down your day of exploration.
If you like to shop, the boutiques in Traverse City, Glen Arbor, Leland and Suttons Bay will delight you. Be sure to check out Cherry Republic for vacation souvenirs worth having (and eating).
Less than 30 miles away is the National Sleeping Bear Dunes, do the dune climb and then get a burger at Boone Docks in Glen Arbor. Live bands on their deck all summer will have you and your family smiling.
If golfing is your game check out The Leland Country Club, The Crowne, Grand Traverse Resort, Mistwoods, King's Challenge, and on and on.
If you are coming for fall color, the hillsides are alive with reds, golds and orange hues, usually the first 3-4 weeks of October. The swans are often fishing in the lake in front of the house this time of year. We have named them Betty and Barney. You could still do some fishing too.
If you are planning a northern winter getaway, you can cross country ski out of your door across the lake or down the road, even do a few laps around the yard. If you feel the need for speed in downhill skiing or snowboarding, head to The Homestead in Leelanau County, Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville or take a day trip to Boyne Mountain. Less than 8 miles from the house is Timberlee, an old ski hill that now only has tubing, but what a blast! Hit one of the chili cook-offs being held or winter festivals, almost every weekend you can find some fun!
