HUGE DECK SPACE, Upper is 640 sq ft. lower (pool deck) is over 1200 sq ft. Ideal for wedding/business parties/family get-togethers. pool is also a huge 840 sq ft. There are 10 tanning loungers and lots of seating. Out door fridge by the pool, and pool bathroom/shower.
Very private with vacant (treed lots) on either side and a perfect distance from town (3.1 miles). You can walk the beach to town, we are at the end of walkable beach.
With the govt. getting the roads in better shape the trip to town center is 10 - 15 min. to find as much excitement as you like, but far enough away to be completely private.
The 200' dock is great for getting picked up for tours/fishing trips and good fishing right off the dock. Relax in the hammocks or get a massage under the Palapa and listen to the waves gently lapping.
Gord and Heather visited San Pedro in the fall of 2009, fell in love with the lifestyle of the island. We searched for a home for 6 months and ended up acquiring La Gran Casa Azul.
Heather & Gord Armstrong purchased this villa in 2010
It was a gorgeous upper level 1500 sq. ft beach house.. We decided we wanted caretakers so built a 1000 sq ft. lower apartment and a pool for them to take care of. We have a large family so to accommodate get together we also built a 1000 sq ft. care takers house.
Our house comes with caretakers on site. We have paddle boards and kayak to offer our guests and close to restaurants, stores and shopping.
Gran Casa Azul is a great place for multi-family groups or large families. We spent our Christmas week there and it was great! We would rent this property again. The pool is beautiful, nice lounge chairs with cushions, a full bathroom and shower, pool floats and beer refrigerator right there. There is a 3 bedroom space with a large living/dining room and fully stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, and 2 full bathrooms upstairs. Using outside stairs to either the front or back door one can get into the downstairs 2 bedroom unit, also with a sitting area and kitchen. The kitchen in the downstairs unit is not as well outfitted, the freezer did not work and the washer/dryer does not work which wasn’t a problem for us since we were all together. The bedrooms are air conditioned and it cooled very well. Like any such unit, if set too low it will freeze up. The family areas are not air conditioned which made late afternoon/evening very warm. If not too windy staying outside on the deck was lovely. I liked the combination locks on the doors so we didn’t have to keep up with keys.
The master bed mattresses were very comfortable, pillow-top type mattresses. The other room mattresses were comfortable but not as cushy. No complaints from anyone until they laid down on the master!
The caretakers Janet and Frank were very helpful. Janet’s brother and son lent my brother fishing gear and they fished several evenings. We ate the catch for our Christmas dinner which Janet helped us prepare. What a treat!
Make sure you have Janet’s phone number before you leave home. We were put on an earlier flight and couldn’t let Janet know that we would be early. We waiting until the original time but our ride didn’t show. Turns out he was at the Tropic Air terminal rather than Maya! Janet was waiting for us at the house and surprised we didn’t show up with the guy she sent!
We took the loaner phone to town to put money on it but didn’t have the phone number and didn’t know how to work the phone to find it. We tried again and they couldn’t get it loaded. I’m sure it was user error but we never got it to work and just asked Janet to make the 2 phone calls we needed to make.
We rented the entire villa for our extended family. The house is very nice, well appointed. The A/C in the bedrooms worked well. The family rooms are not air conditioned which can be a little hot in the afternoon/evenings. It is very nice to sit on the deck in the breeze though if it isn't too windy. The pool is awesome with floats and a bathroom with shower right there. The caretakers Janet and Frank are very helpful and can set up excursions and activities if you need help with that. We were supposed to be met at the airport by Janet and two cab drivers. We ended up being put on an earlier flight and Maya Air wanted to call to let them know we would be early. We didn't have it and nobody at Maya knew it which they thought was strange. We waited until the original time and nobody showed up so we just got cabs at the airport...the cabs Janet sent were waiting at Tropic Air! So, be sure to get Janet's phone number from Heather before you leave home! We tried to put money on the cell phone twice but could never get it to work. I think it was user error or where we took it. We didn't end up needing it but twice and Janet called for us. She also helped us cook the fish my brother caught with her son and brother on the pier for our Christmas dinner! Can't get better than that :
The master beds up and down were very comfy. I heard the queens were a little hard but I slept in one of the bunks one night (husband snoring too loudly!) and it was very nice.
If you are renting the downstairs know that there is not working laundry facilities downstairs. The freezer was also not working although I'm sure is being fixed. The description doesn't say anything but "laundry facilities available" which is correct but you have to carry upstairs if staying downstairs. Not sure what they do if rented to two different parties.
The pavement ends about 1.5 miles before you get to the house and the road condition can be very bad if it hasn't been recently graded or there has been a lot of rain. You can still drive a golf cart on it but it is slow going and very bouncy! I've heard the development on the south end of the island is going to drive them to pave the entire road which would be excellent.
We would stay here again if we have a large enough group. Overall a really good accommodation!
Arrived at La Gran Casa Azul, greeted by great Hosts Gordon and Heather with a cold beverage, the rooms were amazing very Caribbean with all the comforts of home especially the margarita machine which made amazing Pina Coladas with the rum made in Belize.
We rented a golf cart to take us into town which is about 3 1/2 miles. There we found great restaurants and lots of grocery stores to supply all we needed. The snorkeling was amazing saw lots of fish and coral and sting rays and nurse sharks. So were the host Gordon and Heather who took us site seeing.
The pool area is a welcome bonus as you only have to share with yourself its nice and clean and cool relief in the warm sun. We recommend staying here and checking out Pineapples and The Blue Water Grill and Pinocchio's pizza. We saw lots of sites on the golf cart from one end of the island to the other ( as far as the paved road went). Always felt safe and no venders to bother you as we went to the beach or sat by the pool. Had an awesome time looking forward to going again sometime as my husband want to scuba.
What restaurant did you wait soooo long for? And I know they r fixing the roads , have they made any progress with the roads?
La Gran Casa Azul very comfortably accommodated our party of 10 ( 2 families with 5 college/grad students) over Christmas. This is a 2 story home with 2 fully furnished & equipped apartments. Everything is in top notch condition. This comfy home is a secluded, well maintained oceanfront property , 3 1/2 miles south of San Pedro & necessitates the rental of gold carts. Heather & Gordon are very helpful - in fact, Heather inquired about our preferences for holiday decor & had set-up a decorated, lit Christmas Tree. They will book air travel from Belize to San Pedro, arrange your golf cart rental & generally offer invaluable travel tips ( prices for goods are exorbitant in San Pedro; Heather advised packing sunscreen, mosquito repellent with DEET - a must!!- baby oil or Avon's Skin So Soft to combat the evening sand flies - and they are unbearable !. The live-in caretakers, Janet & Frank, are very friendly, helpful & are an invaluable source for everything local ( sightseeing, water adventures, recommended restaurants, where to shop etc.). We 'polled' our favorites aspects of La Gran Casa Azul : secluded private location, lovely spacious grounds, large scale pool with a deep end ( very refreshing on a hot day - which was every day during our stay), a well maintained dock with a palapa (perfect to watch sunrises & sunsets) , the ability to fish right off the dock, 5 fully functional bathrooms, well appointed kitchens. Great patio spaces on both floors. All the bedrooms are air-conditioned; the living spaces are not. But considering that we were in & out of the house all the time, we didn't find this to be a problem. We did pack our own beach towels, jars of peanut butter ( a must for the bottomless pits of the college age stomachs...), coffee, teas, detergent etc. The 3 1/2 mile trip into town over truly disgraceful roads ( in a vacation town? what is the town council thinking of??) didn't bother us at all. As a matter of fact, the college age group loved zipping around in the golf carts. The Belizean people are warm, friendly & engaging. we had a fabulous trip! San Pedro has remarkably high quality restaurants - dining was pleasurable. Advice for booking dinner reservations for large parties - make sure the restaurant can accommodate large groups. We waited 3 hrs at a popular restaurant. Diving the BLUE HOLE was memorable. Reef diving & snorkeling was also great fun; interesting coral, fish, sharks & man rays. We heartily recommend La Gran Casa Azul.
My kids and I stayed at La Gran Casa Azul for 10 days/nights this past March and had such a great time and SO much fun here! The property is very well-kept and gorgeous, quiet, and private. The care-takers were very warm and helpful and made sure we had everything we needed.
The property is just a stone's throw from San Pedro Town - very quick golf cart drive. You can see the surf breaking on the reef from the beach. We kept ourselves busy sightseeing in town, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, a side trip to the ruins on the mainland, and a lot of relaxing and enjoying the sunshine and warm ocean breezes. Can't wait to return!!!
Our house also comes with 2 paddle boards and a 2 man kayak for your convenience. We also have caretakers on site and they will look after your needs and supply you with any information you will need for your stay.
