About Lee & Ruth Stone

We have lived in the Fredericksburg area since 1995. We raised our five sons here and enjoyed many of our summer days playing on the river. Ruth graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and has worked as a home health nurse for 25 years. She now works for a local home health agency. Lee retired as an officer after 23 years with the U.S. Coast Guard. He has his masters degree and works as a Systems Engineer. We enjoy traveling, meeting people and learning about their lives.

Why Lee & Ruth Stone chose Northern Virginia - Washington DC

Our Riverhouse is a unique property on the Rappahannock River due to the proximity to the water, nature and to downtown Fredericksburg. When we purchased this home years ago we did so with the intention of sharing its beauty and an appreciation of the river with others.

What makes this apartment unique

A wall full of floor-to-ceiling windows and a private balcony overlooking the Rappahannock River; a beautiful private space and easy access to downtown Fredericksburg.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Imagine nice pictures of the RiverHouse, then deciding to stay there, then moving in late at night. . . and the next morning: YOU DON'T TRUST YOUR EYES!

Reality is by far beating the pictures and you're forgetting to shut your mouth again. Not to mention that the snow covered everything outside (how did Lee & Ruth manage this?). From a guest's view, it was their best idea to offer the RiverHouse's studio for holidays & vacation. We enjoyed nine wonderful days being inspired every morning by what we saw outside while having our breakfast.

Lee & Ruth were very fast in answering our inquiries. For example, we arranged a late arrival without any problems. They were very helpful, warm & kind. As a nice surprise, we were welcomed with some fruits & a tasty red wine (thanks so much!). The studio not only has this stunning view, it also has everything you need and a certain personal touch because of the nice pictures on the wall & other stuff leading to...well, feeling like at home. By the way, it's also very close to downtown (a must see!). We hope to be returning soon & thank you very much, Lee & Ruth, for the hospitality.

It truly is a tranquil get away on the Rappahannock River; the water is warm and easy for kayaking.

The studio apartment is clean, spacious, bright and cheerful. The bed is super comfortable and the kitchen provides all the modern conveniences, including many cooking utensils. We especially enjoyed the deck, a great place to unwind and watch the birds, squirrels, etc. Lee and Ruth are friendly and very informative about the area; they were always helpful when we needed something. I highly recommend the Riverhouse for anyone either passing through Fredericksburg or vacationing in the area.

A Beautiful Place for Stress Relief

  • 5 of 5

We spent 7 nights at Riverhouse and it was absolutely lovely. The views from the loft are magnificant, and the treehouse deck puts you at eye level with all kinds of birds, squirrels, and even the occasional bald eagle. Lee and Ruth Stone are the ultimate hosts, providing anything you ask for, while respecting your privacy to enjoy the quiet.

We loved using the kayaks both morning and evenings several days, and the river was slow moving and perfect for a lazy paddler like me! I highly recommend this place if you are in the Fredericksburg area. We will definitely stay there again.

Fantastic Stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Riverhouse! It was a peaceful spot to stay. The apartment was very nice and super clean. The bed was comfortable and we slept great! It is convenient to downtown Fredericksburg, so we could easily run back to the apartment for a while, if we were tired or too hot. I hate that we didn't get to meet Lee and Ruth, but their son Nathan took great care of us.

Ruth and Lee were great, friendly and very helpful. My husband and I wanted to spend our 35 anniversary away from home (Mathews, Va) but not to far. We had never been to Fredericksburgs. Lots of history, plenty of good food and more then enough walking. The Riverhouse was a wonderful place to stay. It was quite and close to everything. Great location and wonderful owners. I would recommend this place for a great getaway. Thanks Lee and Ruth for sharing with us, we had a memorable time!

Breathe out stress.....Breathe in Peace

  • 5 of 5

Wanting to get away for a weekend with not much time to plan, we searched all over our state of Virginia to go somewhere new to us that we could explore at our lesuire and to enjoy each other and unwind from life's demands.

We couldn't have asked for a better location! The Riverhouse is SO close to the Historic District, yet you wouldn't know it as you are secluded up high with stunning views of the river. Though the view is spectacular, we found the daily performances of the variety of birds, squirrels, and wildlife more entertaining than anything else. We were able to disconnect from the concerns of life for a few days as we enjoyed God's creation, including perfect weather! We thoroughly enjoyed the town as it was hopping with activities, an antique car show, outdoor musicians, eclectic restaurants and bars, as well as a variety of interesting shops. Truly there is something for everyone.

Lee and Ruth were more than hospitable, making sure we were taking care of and suggestion things in the area as well. Our first night we took Lee's advice and went to Foode Restaurant. It was excellent! Interesting to find out this restaurant, is in a former historic bank which Lincoln himself gave a speech right on the front steps! Pretty cool! Went down to fish as well at the river, due to rain several days prior it was a little muddy....Ruth met my husband and gave him a hose and a fresh towel to clean up with. They offered themselves if we needed anything and gave us our space as well. A perfect combo. We couldn't have asked for a better weekend!

Charming and peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved all the light from the window walls, and watching the birds, squirrels, and the fishermen on the river. Everything was as described and even prettier than the pictures. Historic Fredericksburg was only a few minutes drive and we enjoyed sightseeing there several days, as well as spending time with our son's family in Stafford. Lee and Ruth were very accommodating and gracious hosts, even when they had to return home to let us in after we locked ourselves out. We would definitely enjoy staying here again, as long as our knees could do the two flights of stairs!

Our rental property is located in southern Stafford County on the tidal section of the pristine Rappahannock River which is designated a state scenic river. The water here is flat and tranquil. The home is in a peaceful park-like setting. Bald eagles, great blue herons, hawks, ospreys, kingfishers, woodpeckers, owls, finches, ducks and more thrive here. The property has easy water access. Canoes, kayaks and life-vests are available to enjoy the river. You can even paddle to downtown Fredericksburg (which takes about 45 minutes), dock the boat at the riverside park and stroll to lunch at a nearby restaurant. It's a 5 minute drive by car to historic downtown Fredericksburg where there are numerous shops, restaurants, galleries, national parks and historic homes to explore. The Fredericksburg area features much American history with numerous civil war battlefields and cemeteries available to tour. Today, Fredericksburg is a vibrant community with an active art scene involving crafts, music and the performing arts. There are public golf courses, museums, local wineries and many other enjoyable activities.
