Hawi, only a 20 minute drive, offers excellent restaurant choices for seafood (Sushi Rock) for traditional island fare (Bamboo Restaurant), take out (Lighthouse Deli), morning coffee/ afternoon ice cream (Coffee Mill). Further afield, in Waimea, a 20 minute drive, you have fine dining (Merrimans or Red Water cafe) and great lunch (Pau, AKA sushi, or Lillikoi Cafe).
Kawaihae offers several excellent restaurants and are only 5 minutes away by car, along with diving, sportfishing, and fine art galleries.
Within 10 miles of Hale Olomana are superior 5 star hotels offering every amenity you can imagine: shopping, spa treatments, hair & nail salons, tennis, racquetball, fine dining and more. Other activities include: charter boats (sailing and fishing), surfing, wind surfing, biking, hiking and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world.

We enjoyed our week at your beautiful home on Olomana Road so much. Your beautiful home and the lovely gardens and pool make it a truly relaxing paradise. Our two granddaughters loved your pool. The quiet setting and views of the ocean just make your home such a pleasure. We would definitely love to stay at your home in the future.
This place really has everything. The house is open and spacious, the kitchen is well equipped (actually, that’s an understatement), the plantings are wonderful – it’s Hawaii, after all – and the setting is perfect.
Plus, there’s the lanai! To be honest, we would have been happy if we’d pitched a tent next to that lanai. The house is wonderful and all, but with that lanai, we hardly noticed. We were outside from morning to night, going inside basically just to sleep. The views are killer, the flowers are perfect, the pool is amazing and the two-level lanai gives you the option of sitting in the sun or the shade. And did I mention the pool? SO nice!
The location is exactly what we were looking for – far enough removed from the tourists, yet close enough to take advantage of restaurants and shopping. We went to Waikoloa Village a couple of times (LavaLava Beach Club). Gorgeous beaches were only 10 minutes away, and there’s a great fish market 5 minutes away, with a farm stand right next to it. Our usual routine was to go to a beach, have lunch out, and stop at the fish market and farm stand to get dinner ingredients to cook on the grille. What could be better?
It’s also a quick 20 minute drive to Hawi, where there’s an incredible sushi place – I think it’s called Sushi Rock, or something like that. I read a review saying service could be a problem, but we found it to be excellent. And the food is so imaginative. Loved it! We also did the breakfast buffet at Ulu, the restaurant at the Four Seasons. Definitely worth checking out – not cheap, but impressive.
The highlight of the day was sipping some kind of fruity cocktail while watching the sunset from the lanai. Did I mention the lanai is awesome?
We did hike down to the beach at Pololu Valley, and we drove the upper road back from Waimea, and also over to the Pololu Valley – very scenic. Driving down through Kohala Ranch from the upper gate is a bit of an experience – there are cattle lounging in the road! Kohala Ranch is both a residential community and a working cattle ranch.
We had planned to do much more hiking and sightseeing, but that lanai kept calling to us. It’s such a perfect place to relax and unwind. Sometimes I think we don’t realize how stressful our lives are until we really, really relax. If you’re looking for bright lights/big city, go somewhere else. But if you want to enjoy the kind of thing that only Hawaii can give you, this is definitely it.
My wife and I just returned from an 11-day stay at Olomana Hale, celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We only used the master bedroom, but with the additional rooms, the house would comfortably sleep 8. If it wasn't clear from the listing, the best features of this house are the pool and the lanai with its expansive ocean views, which produced truly amazing sunsets each night of our stay. A close third would be the lush landscaping, with a variety of flowering tropical plants and a few fruit trees. The landscaping serves to make the entire property seem very private.
We found the home overall to be very comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with everything you may need in terms of appliances and accessories (not the bare minimum that may be found in some rental homes), the master bath is what you would expect in a home at this level, and the living space was nicely appointed.
The Kohala Ranch community is an active ranch, so cattle graze in the area above this home. We never had any trouble related to the cattle, and found it quaint to have them grazing nearby. The North Kohala area can seem a bit remote, but we were looking for a quiet stay. The harbor area at Kawaihae just to the south has a few small restaurants (we loved Pesto's), Wiamea has groceries and several restaurants less than 30 minutes away, Hawi is a quaint town about 30 minutes to the north, and there are several nice resorts just to the south, complete with resort-style dining and shopping only 20 minutes south in Mana Lani and Waikoloa.
A few suggestions, beyond the typical beach / snorkeling / golf offerings:
If there is still active lava flow from Kilauea, this is a must see - you can walk in, bike and walk in, take a boat, or a helicopter.
Pololu valley has a nice short 15-20 minute hike down to a black sand beach. The adventurous can follow the beach to the end and pick up the trail that continues up the ridge to the next valley over.
Drive Kohala mountain road, at the back (upper) gate to Kohala Ranch - it's a beautiful drive.
Visit a few local towns - Hawi, Wiamea, Hilo, Kailua-Kona all have something to offer.
Restaurant suggestions: Pesto's in Kawaihae, Bamboo restaurant in Hawi, and Ruth's Chris in Waikoloa Village was also good. For an authentic local breakfast or lunch, try Hawaiian Style Cafe in Wiamea.
This Kohala Ranch home is lovely! From the moment the sunrises and through the sunsets, the views from this home are breathtaking! The pool is gorgeous! The kitchen is fully stocked which makes it easy to prepare meals to dine on the beautiful lanai. Our stay in this vacation rental far exceeded our expectations. We have memories to last a lifetime and we absolutely loved every moment we spent at this home!
The combination of the flowering bougainvillea surrounding the large pool and large and comfortable lani all overlooking the ocean is just perfect. The house has all the amenities with plenty of space. Sunsets and night skies are spectacular. Absolutely loved our time here.
This place is just gorgeous. Stayed here with wife and both of our parents and we had a family vacation we will never forget.
The view is epic -- you'll find morning blends into afternoon and you haven't gone anywhere -- because all you ever needed is right there in front of you.
The rooms are nice and beds are very comfortable. The Kohala area is low key and away from main resorts -- but close enough to enjoy their amenities (like golf, beaches, etc.)
I wish we could go back every year! We loved this place. Perfect for a family vacation.
We spent a week at this home and were incredibly happy. We were looking for a private getaway and this was just what we needed. While you're lounging around the pool, all you can see is the ocean and the sky and all you can hear are the birds. You're far, far away from any other houses.
We had an amazing time cooking and relaxing at the house. The kitchen is large and you'll have trouble deciding whether you want to eat at the bar, in the dining room or, of course, outside. It was just the two of us, so we joked that the bathroom with an exit to the pool was our pool house. The office is also large and gave us a nice place to charge all of our mobile devices and map out our adventures.
We sipped coffee and looked down the mountain at the ocean every morning in disbelief that we had such a large piece of paradise all to ourselves.
I wish we could have stayed longer!
Fantastic whale watching from November through April! They breech right before your eyes! There is a pod of dolphins that frequents the area, too.
