About Tom - FTR Staff

Our Families "Amburgey" heritage is Appalachian. Our love for the Mountains, Western North Carolina's Rivers and it's abundance of natural organic materials is reflected in our design. Enjoy

This Log home's location and title, was inspired by the oil painting, “Following The River”, by Robert Duncan.

The pictorial imagery of Native Americans on horseback crossing a wintery river's edge could secretly come to life in this uniquely tranquil, unobstructed river view. The Tuckaseeggee River’s abundant wild life and its degrees of strength, are breathtaking and worth the perch.

Tom - FTR Staff purchased this cabin in 1978

Wow. This place goes down on my list of favorite places to be. If there were a 6-star option, I would have chosen that. My family of 6 stayed the weekend here and had a blast. There is a beautiful 2-faced fireplace that we utilized every night. The house is lavishly decorated with old books, games, American Indian decor, and art. We loved that it didn't feel sterile. It was like something out of a movie. The caretaker is very sweet and went above and beyond (including prepping the fireplaces) to make us feel comfortable. Nearby, there is a little town….if you want to get out and have a beer at the brewery, antique, or eat great food. It is the perfect place to just getaway and sip hot tea, read a book, and enjoy the beautiful views. I can't wait to plan our next visit!!!

Perfect mountain get away. Cabin totally depicts the heritage and culture of the area.

Perfect cabin for a family retreat. 8 of us and 3 dogs spent 6 days and 5 nights in the cabin. Had the perfect outdoor area for bon fires and grilling at night. Located right on the river, it was awesome to sit in the family room at sunset watching the river. And luckily this cabin was just mins away from Cherokee and Asheville. We were able to spend time in both locations several days.

Our care taker Doris was absolutely fabulous. She was there for anything we needed. A very special lady ! If you are looking for a great vacation getaway I encourage you to rent this cabin. it was a great time .... we will be back.

Wonderful Time!

Great cabin! Came up for snow!

Here's a helpful note. The night we arrived the roads were icy. The location of this cabin is on a well maintained State road. Safe! The Driveway, the stairs and Cabins exterior walkways were salted and the caretaker Ms Doris, efficiently guided us in by phone contact, then greeted us at the front door. If coming for snow, good choice.

There were seven of us, and two labs. The cabin was clean and comfortable. Caretaker made us feel very welcomed. She mentioned TV on porch/living space was just added. Note, great addition, we never wanted to leave. Two fireplaces so worth seeing.

Beware of bad nonsense reviews, this place was great!

Our family rebooked for this summer!

Owner's Response: Thank you dear for kind words. Im very glad you played games and enjoyed your family without a TV. Yes, having a large screen TV in our biggest Living space was avoided, but is now i can confirmed TV installed/completed. The New generation demands TV. I Pray beautiful our river view isn't lost in Cable TV Shows. thank you Jillian

The overall cleanliness was horrible. Cabin was cute, but when traveling with kids you want to make sure it's clean. My youngest is 4 and the first night we literally threw away a pair of socks (she was walking on an area rug in the bathroom and it was full of hair). Apparently, the family who stayed there before us had a few big dogs which did explain the dog hair everywhere but it lacks a deep cleaning. Very dusty! We also experienced issues with the electricity every night. The cabin overall description does not advise that there is a room downstairs that you have no access to which is where the electric panel is located, so essentially every day I had to call the care taker more than once to reset the panel. We literally ate in the dark for two nights since she went out of town and were afraid to lose the electricity in the back room, which is on the same switch as the kitchen lights. I have to mention that the wifi is also hooked up to this switch, so it's really hard to make calls out without the wifi. This actually has been the worse cabin I have stayed in. The owner refunded us a measly $100, which is nothing compared to what we paid for for the stay and the actual clean up fee, which to me is joke since the place needs desperate attention. The beds mattresses are old, no room to put luggage and there is no pantry space in the kitchen. Also, if you are planning on going with friends beware that the doors do not close properly. I think the only door that closed was the downstairs bathroom. Also, for those of you expecting 2 bathrooms, one of the bathrooms has a jacuzzi tub. Great if that is what you want, but if you are traveling with others and need another shower, it's not conventional, It ended up that 6 people needed to use one bathroom. They also omit the fact the home is off the highway, for light sleepers this sucks! You literally hear every car at 6am! Its a shame cause the location was great we drove back and forth to Gatlinburg and Asheville area. I felt bad cause from the pictures this looked like an amazing cabin and I am the one who picked this place.

Owner's Response: Gypsies! To Demand of a full Charge back /refund after enjoying the use of my beautiful families cabin and over the top use of our FULL CARE-TAKING STAFF!, answers your intent ? A FREE HOIDAY! Gyspy FRAUD! As the Owner, I was very proud of my Care-taking staff to work so kindly and graciously and, above and beyond to please your family thru their holiday. They tried to please your every need and eventually at an enormous cost, and expense to my family, provided you personal 24 hour care throughout their Christmas/New Years eve holiday. At time and a half your 24 hour, maid and electrical contractor requests and needs were appalling. Reading a nonsense review aided in your bogus accusations and review. I urge future guests who may read this nonsense review, review the Guest the week before and following your arrival dates. Rest assured my family I has no time for dishonesty and poor integrity. Shame on you.

I would NOT recommend renting the cabin due to uncleaniness and lack of support from caregiver!

Our family visits the area every year around Thanksgiving and this is the first time we've been disappointed with the cabin selection. Upon arrival Doris met us and gave us a tour of the cabin. During the tour we learned the back area (where hammock is located) is NOT heated and cooled, the only heat is the wood burning fireplace. This area is where the only table is located, the owner suggests closing the door or turning off central Heat/AC unit in the main cabin if using the table. The cabin does not have a porch on the back (where double glass doors are located) the front door is the only access in and out of the cabin. Doris informed us during the tour the previous occupants used most of the firewood and she would have more delivered, this never happened, we rationed and used one fireplace.

You only have access to the top two levels of the cabin, lower level is blocked off for "private quarters". If your family enjoys playing video games or watching movies, this is NOT the cabin for you!! Only one television, a 19 inch is located upstairs granted is has full satellite service but the couch was busted several months ago from children jumping on the couch, per Doris, leaving not a comfortable place to sit! Downstairs has two recliners, both are broken and won't recline. Best options for relaxing are the hammock!

Doris apologized for all the dust in the upstairs bedroom, the bed canopy, made of sticks is covered in dust! She said it was too hard for her to clean and she was afraid she'd break one of the sticks! Needless to say we didn't stay in this room!!

Two other beds are old and lumpy, comfortable enough to get thru the week! The cabin is located very close to the main road so you hear cars passing all night!

The internet service was out when we arrived, I texted Doris and she was to check with the owner and get back with us! Unfortunately, she never responded back to us and we was without internet until the last night when my husband unplugged the router and service started back up. Doris also texted the upstairs toilet didn't work blaming the guests before us, either the boys or the dog dropped something in the toilet.

Overall, I would NOT recommend the cabin! It's nasty! It's a sad situation when you cant take a bath without stink bugs floating in the water! The only positive aspect of staying here is the river!

Owner's Response: Stephanie, As the Owner our guests stay is very important to our family. Our Care-taking staff is exceptional and has been working for our family, for 15 years. I addressed your concerns immediately after reading this review. During your stay COMMUNICATION of DIRT?, HEAT?, or WOOD? was never properly spoken to Caretaker. Disappointing, a 24 hour accessibility to Ms Doris/Caretaker and/or our Full Maid Staff was available. Their Names, Numbers and all info was exchanged when arrived and was listed in full display on Refrigerator and in guest book. Disheartening you were disappointed. I will as the owner, work on why communication failed so horriably. As for Our Cabin was unfortunately designed to be not about videos games. By design it is about Peace, noticing and really embracing our rivers view/beauty and strives to be a true family gathering spot. Our Loft space does have a 30 inch TV for a private quiet area. Now , Our Large 400 sq ft Living space had a 40 inch TV added. All the TV's have a full 200 plus channels/including HBO! Great Room does have a Large Field stone fireplace and two 1000 watt Heaters. Our Apologies if not turned ON appropriately or if the Fireplace was not light when arrived. I was informed A very large delivery of fire wood was stacked while your stay. Restoring fireplace wood Interior / is responsibility of guests with free wood provided. Our amazing Staff/Caretaker, Ms Doris, was available 24 hours for service, and was available if you need assistance hauling up wood/ lighting or turning heaters on. Very disappointed your Holiday was not enjoyable.
