AMOR DEL LAGO is a unique, upscale colorful, comfortable, secluded cabana six minutes by car to Pucon. Our guests tell us consistently that our fully equipped cabana offers far more amenities than any other in the area. Pucon, the adventure capital of Chile, is stunning, its beauty rivaling European lake resorts. We are located in the heart of the Lake District. Amor del Lago is on the same property as GRACIAS A LA VIDA, VRBO Listing 140763. We are located four hours north of Patagonia, in the foothills of the majestic Villarrica Volcano, in Southern Chile, the “Switzerland of South America.” We call this special retreat, Amor del Lago (Love of the Lake) and you will love it, too! This charming cottage is nestled into a forested, pastoral hillside. The exceptional panoramic view of the entire lake and peninsula is captivating. Pucon’s Black Forest architecture, delicious kuchen, and melt-in-your-mouth chocolate will make you feel like you’re in the Alps!
Amor's sister cabana, Romance del Lago, is available as of mid-November, 2014. Here are some tips to help you decide between Amor and Romance:
Both have the same size, floor plan, and amenities and spectacular views. Amor is located on the bottom of the Gracias a la Vida property. Romance is a few minutes further down the hill, outside the main gate, on the adjoining property to the north. Both have 2 bedrooms and can accommodate a fifth person, at an additional charge, in a single inflatable bed in the living/dining area. Both are colorful, light-filled, and have elevated decks. Both are well-insulated with a wood stove and heat pump. The price is the same for both homes. Both are ecologically conscious in design and energy usage. Both are located in a pastoral setting amidst sheep, horse, and cows grazing in the distance. Our golden retrievers occasionally visit Amor (especially Oso, a gentle soul who loves children). The dogs do not have access to Romance. There is a shared quincho (barbecue area) for the two cabanas.
-Panoramic lake view
-Egyptian and indigenous Mapuche décor
-Twin beds can also be reconfigured as a California King bed.
-A bit more secluded in the forest.
-Quincho (barbecue area) is right next to the cabin. So, if you like nightly asados (grilled meals), this may be more convenient.
-Volcano and panoramic lake views
-Quincho is a few minutes up the hill next to Amor.
-Open on three sides with and forested on the fourth.
Our cedar-colored cabana with its green metal roof, picture windows and doors, and raised terrace deck overlooks the expansive vista of Lake Villarrica, surrounding forest and mountains, and our verdant sheep pasture. As you enter AMOR, you will be greeted by an open living/dining room and kitchen with high ceilings, exposed pine beams, elegant yet comfy furniture, and a farmhouse-style dining nook. You will be bathed in light and the welcoming colors of nature: apple green, sky blue, and lemon yellow faux-painted walls. The rustic ceramic tile floor and a radiant wood stove that heats not only the cabana, but the water for the radiators in the two view bedrooms and bathroom.
The cheery yellow, open-style kitchen is built around a large and beautiful, stainless-steel, farmhouse sink brought from the U.S. The stained-wood, stylish cabinets feature hammered sunburst and hearts tin inserts of Amish design. The Bosch gas stove with Trotter hood, energy-efficient G.E. dishwasher, the Eco-rated LG refrigerator, and Eco-friendly washer-dryer will bring the familiarity and convenience of home. The compact, yet carefully-designed kitchen has everything you need to prepare delicious meals and to enjoy the fabulous view while cooking and cleaning up. Relax on our lovely deck with a fresh juice, copa de vino, or a cup of tea. Surrounding our home is a forest of 'maqui' bushes, whose purple fruit has recently been found to contain the highest amount of anti-oxidants of any plant in the world! Pick cherries in the summer, fresh blackberries, and Vitamin-C-filled rose hips. This is truly a paradise! We use no pesticides or herbicides on our property and use environmentally-friendly products whenever we can.
The colorful, hand-woven, ethnic hangings and rugs come straight from the Bedouins in Egypt, as well as the romantic, silver, filigree lamp over the dining room table. Argentinian stainless steel ceiling fans throughout our house will keep you cool in the temperate summer of Southern Chile. Magazine-quality photos of mouth-watering food and exotic travel destinations will delight the senses. Lounge in our side-by-side Rosen leather reclining couch as you sink into a great book, laze by a cozy fire, enjoy an engrossing video, or soak up R and R after a day of hiking, climbing Volcan Villarrica, or river rafting.
You will love cuddling under Egyptian-cotton sheets in either a California King, twin, or queen-size bed, depending on your needs. Each bedroom is situated to take maximum advantage of the soothing lake vista. We also offer a high-end, high-rise inflatable bed with a memory-foam topper for a fifth guest or child. A shared bath with Egyptian cotton towels, massage shower head, and plenty of towel bars will refresh you after a day of adventure, lying on the beach, luxuriating in a hot springs, or enjoying fine or fun dining.
For outdoor grilling and dining, we offer a spacious wood quincho (structure for barbecuing and eating) with a wood and slate table and chairs and a wonderful view of the lake.
Ideal getaway for single travelers, couples, small families, adventurers, nature lovers, or those seeking a tranquil retreat in nature. Perfect place to call home for a week or two visit to the Chilean Lake District. Easy access to Patagonia, the ocean, the Andes, and the Argentine Lake District. Take advantage of the 50+ restaurants in and around Pucon, prepare your own delicious meal from Chilean fresh salmon, congrio, merluza, corvina, lamb (cordero), lomo (beef), or wonderful fresh veggies and fruit. Top it off with a great Chilean or Argentine wine and you'll have an unforgettable dining experience in one of the most scenic spots on the planet!
We are naturopathic/homeopathic doctors and authors, married for 27 years. In 2005 we took akayaking trip to Pumalin Park in the South of Chile, and fell in love with the area around Pucon. We were captivated by the breathtaking beauty of our property and bought it the same day! We named our land Ayun Mapu (Mapuche for 'land of love' or 'land that we love.' We built our dream home and house for our caretaker family. Last year we added a cabin. We have landscaped professionally and enjoy gorgeous flowers, native trees and bushes, fruit trees in a park-like setting as well as savoring the bounty of a large organic garden. We now have 9 acres, sheep, chickens, and a resident German shepherd as well as our outdoor cats and golden retrievers who accompany us from the U.S. It helps that Judyth got a degree in Spanish literature and Bob is avidly improving his Spanish. Our home, Gracias a La Vida, which we vacate ourselves seasonally for guests, was so popular that we decided to build a second rental home which was more economical: Amor del Lago. It is also a place for us to stay when our home is rented.
Judyth Reichenberg purchased this house in 2012
The view, the view, the view!! The shimmering water of the huge lake, the smoldering, snow-capped volcano ten minutes away; the countless stars of the Milky Way from the terrace; the delicious home-cooked Chilean meals with the best wine on the planet; the riotous cosmos, dahlias, lilies, lavender; the compact, colorful kitchen with all the modern conveniences; the great mattresses and soft sheets; the long summer days of light until 10PM, more hikes and hot springs and restaurants than we could name; the honking Chilean geese; the elusive, green lorakeets, who show up now and then. Watching our lambs frolic in the pasture next door. Buying delicious fresh or smoked salmon from the local fishmongers. Attending top-notch yoga classes just ten minutes away. Strolling on the beach all by ourselves. Kayaking on Lake Villarrica with outrageous views everywhere, and no other paddlers in sight. Staying toasty with the Amesti woodstove or visiting one of the numerous local hot springs on a rainy day. Savoring delicious, healthy, organic salads and fresh herbs right from our own garden and greenhouses. Eating the wonderful, fresh cheese that you can buy on practically every corner in Pucon and that we hope to make from our sheep's milk this year. Greeting our cheerful cuidador (caretaker) each morning as he asks, unfailingly, 'Como amanacio?' meaning 'How did you wake up?'
It took us less than five minutes after stepping onto our land to decide to buy it! The sheer beauty was jaw-dropping! Earlier this year we found the perfect place for the chalet which offers the unique combination of seclusion (nestled in the forest), expansive view of Lake Villarrica, the surrounding mountains, and our sheep pasture, and a remarkably peaceful environment.
From the guest book:
As all other guests before us, we had a wonderful time at Amor del Lago! Bob & Judyth were fantastic hosts and made sure the cabin has everything one could even think of... It truly feels like a home away from home.
We arrived in the rain, but the rest of the week the weather the weather was very good. We stayed busy most of the time and put in lots of hiking [three pages of detailed information about the various hikes, trails, waterfalls, hot springs]. At the end of each day, we would enjoy Pucon- pisco sour at Mamas & Tapas bar on O'Higgins followed by a meal at Trawen, an excellent restaurant!
Bob and Judyth, thanks for sharing your piece of paradise with us. We truly enjoyed everything here and hope to be back one day.
This place is a find. Judyth and Bob honestly want the place to be very livable and have clearly put a lot of thought into designing it that way. They occasionally rent out their palace and live in this cabana. The location is super close to Pucon, but far enough that you are in the country. Cubinato, the horse, is a sly fellow who loves carrots and visiting. The dogs and cats (which generally hang out up at the palace) are super sweet and my kids loved them. The sheep are lacking in personality, but make great backgrounds for photos. The bird life is remarkable. Bring your binoculars as I had pangs that I wished I had mine several times - hummingbirds, parrots, and lots of other birds I'm not familiar with (we saw an Andean Condor on the volcano!)
Other things you'll care about
* WiFi works well and was reasonably speedy on my phone, but for some reason ran like a pig on my laptop (maybe my issue)
* Personally, I don't think you need 4-wheel to navigate the road, but we had it.
* Washing machine worked great - you'll be encouraged to line dry for power reasons, which worked well
* Judyth and Bob know the area super well and are a great asset for ideas for activities and are VERY approachable
We rented a couple of other cabanas in Chile on our trip and they were jokes compared to this (no hot water, no towels, everything was very cheap - low standards). The Pucon area is very interesting and will keep any group engaged for at least a week. We did whitewater rafting, went to a thermal bath, did horseback riding, and climbed the volcano. I'll say one thing about the volcano. Obviously, it is a lot of work to get up and down, but it is a fairly hazardous trail (at least in April) with everyone falling down multiple times and most catching themselves a couple of times before sliding down the "hill" many feet.
Our guides kept us moving with much less breaks than anyone in the group wanted. However, I've hiked all over the world and it was a one of a kind trip - just don't assume it is safe by American/Canadian/Europe standards.
Book it, and if you are thinking about early April it is an awesome time to be in Pucon with very few tourists, lovely weather, and days long enough to tire anyone out.
p.s. Go ahead and bring your good camera as the sunsets from the deck alone are worth the lugging.
Amor del Lago is in a beautiful location with gorgeous lake views surrounding by trees. Our family of three had a wonderful stay, and Bob and Judyth were truly tremendous hosts that answered dozens of questions before and during our stay to make it as wonderful as it could be.
The accommodations are excellent, with many personal touches throughout. All the amenities we needed were available for a very comfortable stay. We would come again, and certainly recommend Amor del Lago to others.
We loved the array of visiting birds (parrots, tiques, lapwings), hares running across the property and sheep moving about.
Access to town was easy, and we had no problem getting around from this location. Great location, great cabana and incredible hosts. Amor.
great way to catch a glimpse of the chilean equivalent of lake tahoe. private w lovely views in a great cottage (very well thought out ) . we especially enjoyed visits from the incredibly well mannered dogs and the mare and her foal. very fortunate to have made the acquaintance of other guests on the property who got us caught up on life in pucon. we hope to return. muchas gracias !
Before arriving here we had spent some nights not sleeping so well because of noisy surroundings. Being able to sleep window open and only hear birds and an occasional distant dog was a real relief. We had our best sleeps during our five week trip in Chile.
The cabana is tastefully decorated and all the stuff was decent and not just "good enough for rental".
We did not have a car or bikes. We paid 6000 pesos a taxi ride to and from the town when we did not walk. Often when walking we got a ride from the owners, housekeeper or friendly locals. It's one hour walk to Pucón. We thought about renting bikes, but we were asked 12000 pesos per bike per day, and the bike renters seem reluctant to rent overnight. The owners and the housekeeper were all super nice, and once we even received a good bagful of self grown salads. You will be asked to pay for the housekeeper separately, around 10%. The bed was very comfortable and the blanket warm enough to allow keeping that window open and enjoy the fresh November nights. The view over the lake is great and it was a pleasure to observe the animals grazing around the cabin.
Our family of four just spent a wonderful four weeks in this lovely cabana. The cabana is in great condition, and is beautifully decorated. The kitchen is fully stocked, and there is also a nice BBQ area for grilling. The beds are comfortable, and the living room is well set up for relaxing and watching movies on the TV (no TV channels available). My favorite feature was the deck, with its incredible views of Lake Villarica and the surrounding countryside.
For kids, you have a large field adjacent to the cabana for them to explore and play, with sheep in the adjacent field and beautiful birds above. While we were there, blackberries were available in abundance along the road leading to the property.
It is a 10 minute drive into town, 5 minutes of that is on a narrow, sometimes bumpy dirt road. We had a 2 wheel drive truck, which did fine. I cannot imagine using a standard sedan for an extended visit, but for 1 week, you would probably be ok. Some might find that they would prefer to be closer to the action in Pucon, but we were happy to get away from the crowds and congestion of the town, especially during February, when it was crazy crowded.
The caretakers and owners are up the hill, out of sight but nearby if you need them. They were extremely helpful and welcoming, and responsive to any needs or questions we had.
We were quite happy with our decision to stay in this cabana, and would recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy Pucon and the surrounding area.
The perfect year-round getaway to enjoy the wide array of activities in the scenic Chilean lake district. Enjoy hiking in the beautiful nearby national parks, rafting the Trancura river, climbing or skiing the volcano, and soaking in a local hot spring. Visit one of the fifty-plus of restaurants in Pucon or dine indoors or out while taking in the a panoramic view of lake villarrica right from our chalet and terrace. After a magical sunset, view the entire milky way, the southern cross, and other constellations of the southern hemisphere. Listen to the sounds of the native bandurrias (geese). In the winter, get a massage, relax by the fire with your favorite book, take a yoga class ten minutes away, marvel at the snow-capped volcano ten minutes away, snowboard, snow ski, and enjoy the tranquility and exquisite beauty of off-season pucon. Make pucon the beginning or perfect ending of your patagonian adventure.
