Stay with us and see what Grandma was so thrilled about. We offer a little more for a little less. Located in the heart of the Historic Terlingua Ghost Town, 1/8 mile off Hwy 170, our 1970s Airstream travel trailer, we call Josephine after a Great Aunt, is all decked out for your visit. With a complete kitchen and bath indoors, as well as a conveniently located bath house, all the linens, an extra cozy hand made Afghan and an antique down comforter for the full size bed, any utensils for cooking you could need, or perhaps you would like to use the outdoor gas grill ( located in the Hobbit House Pavilion ) to whip up a juicy steak. With heat and A/C you will be warm or cool as desired. You can sit in an antique outdoor rocker by your fire pit and feed Quail and Dove morning and night, our bunny's love flour tortillas by the way. Walk up to THE PORCH for a cool drink and listen to live music or dine in the Historic Starlight Theater. Our Airstream is comfy and handy.

You and yours will have room to stretch & lot's to do. With many dirt roads to walk you don't have to be a hiker to see it all. Just pack your bags and some groceries, ( bring your own fire wood/ or you can purchase locally.) we will provide the rest.
My husband and I have been living in the Ghost Town for 7 years now with our World Famous Terlingua Racing Chihuahua, Buckwheat. I am an Artist Specializing in birds and wildlife, my husband is a semi retired Veterinarian, he was born and raised Texan, and yes he's Aggie thru and thru. I'm a transplant from up north. My dad was in the army, so I grew up all over the country. Yup I'm an Army Brat. Buckwheat was born in Zapata TX. and has been with us for almost 15 years.
Danilea ( Dani ) Bottenfield purchased this recreational vehicle in 2005
We, like so many, moved here because we fell in love with the folks ( nun friendlier anywhere) and the wonderful motoring roads. Great Views and handy location to it all. We came to visit and just couldn't leave.
Stay with us and experience the Past, Present and just maybe your future home away from home, just as we did. Sit on your patio enjoy a cool drink and watch the world go by. With wonderful views of the Mountains of the Big Bend National Park in the East and long stretches of open land all around, fall in love just as we did. Stroll to 4 local restaurants and bars, hike the parks, or cook up something special in our outdoor kitchen ( The Hobbit House ) If you are here during one of our movie nights, or a Tween Party, please join in the fun. Every one is welcome.
We stayed here in late April and early May and had a great time. It was our first time to stay in an Airstream and we loved it. We hiked every day and was thankful that Big Bend National Park is so close. This is definitely a nice, low-key, high adventure vacation. Just what we wanted it to be.
Thank you Dani & Sam for a great first Big Bend experience. The peppers were nice and sweet!
We loved our Retro stay with Dani and Sam! The Airstream camper was comfortable and cozy with lots of character and age-appropriate quirks. :) It was low-key, unpretentious and very relaxing. The "Ghost Town" of Terlingua is just north of Big Bend and centrally located, so everything we wanted to see in our 2-1/2 day stay was within an hour's drive, which is one of the greatest benefits of staying there. (Plus, the Starlight Theater restaurant is FABULOUS!) We booked two tours (a 1/2-day Rio Grande River raft trip and a full day "Round the Bend" jeep trip) with the Far Flung Outdoor Adventures tour service located in Terlingua, less than 5 minutes from the Airstream. Dani and Sam are warm and gracious hosts and make you feel like you're "home." We're former tent campers who have reached an age where we prefer hotels, but this was a great "middle ground" and reminded us of the fun we had camping with our kids back in the day. Highly recommend Retro Rents for your next stay!
I don't know why it has taken me 2 weeks to write the review after returning from Terlingua. This stay was by far the best place my husband and I have stayed in west Texas. We were greeted by Dani upon arrival and showed around the property. The camper was awesome! It has everything you need; a full fridge, microwave, coffee pot, towels, wash rags and plates with utensils. Outside were two rocking chairs and a table. We drank coffee every morning and cooked breakfast in the camper while watching the birds, quail and bunnies eat outside our door. That was my favorite part, the animals!! We joined Dani and Sam in their home for beer and homemade ice cream our first night. Throughout the stay, they were very friendly and helpful with everything Terlingua and beyond. We can't wait to get back to west Texas, our favorite part of the state. Retro Rents will be our home away from home. Thanks!!!
My husband and I decided we wanted to take a visit to Big Bend NP. We looked up hotels in the area, not knowing much about the area but it became pretty evident that the hotels in the area were either 1) far away from Big Bend, 2) booked, or 3) overpriced. So I looked into what sort of options there were on VRBO. An Airstream in a Ghost Town?? Perfect!
The airstream itself is well equipped, with all of the cooking essentials, towels, hand soap, and basic food stuffs-- salt, pepper, sugar, coffee, creamer. The bed is comfy despite being small and the airstream is pretty spacious, considering. The windows were tricky to close but otherwise it was perfect!
Dani and Sam were great hosts, and took care of anything we needed right away. We had a great time being so close to Big Bend and hiked on the two days were there, and also walked over to the 'ghost town' and explored a bit on foot. Very convenient location to be staying, and I would definitely stay there again.
This is the epitome of Terlingua -- -- quirky (there is a faux submarine and pirate ship next door); convenient (adult beverages and food are within walking distance and the entrance to Big Bend National Park and a grocery store is only a short drive); retro (a really cool, clean, and well equipped home-a-way with a great bed); scenic (birds, bunnies, and mountains galore); and best of all it has incredible hosts. Dani and Sam gave us lots of privacy but were immediately available if any issue arose. Stayed 5 days and loved every one.
This was the first time I've been in an Airstream. Once I got used to the space I found it comfortable. The trailer is clean, the bed was good, and everything worked. The owners are warm and welcoming, I enjoyed my time with them. I'll take this opportunity to thank them for their kindness.
The Terlingua Ghost Town offers a central jumping off point for hiking, biking, motor cycling, horseback riding, shopping , galleries, live music, or watching the sun set in the east. This is an old mining town that offers, an insight into West Texas's past, our church has been restored and is often used for weddings. We love wandering the entire area and taking in the sights.
