Eastsound House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, 4000 sq ft home on five acres with magnificent views

Accommodations: 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, livingroom, dining room, gourmet kitchen, media room (lite), playrooms, sauna, hot tub, decks with views, lots of closets, workshop, garages, outbuildings… (Comfortably sleeps 8, can sleep up to 10.)

This is a fabulous house on a wonderful island in one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. It takes about 3 hours (drive and ferry) to get there from Seattle. Or, you can take a small plane from Seattle in about thirty minutes. Have your vacation, get-together, private time, or retreat in this comfortable, accommodating house, located on magnificent, magical Orcas Island. Set on five acres, maximizing views while retaining privacy, this house is spacious and private, with captivating views west and north to Canada up the Strait of Georgia. Hang out and relax with friends and family. Watch beautiful sunsets, observe bald eagles and deer, be entertained by hummingbirds, luxuriate in the hot tub while you stare at the stars.

This house has many accommodations and choices. It has been tastefully and carefully furnished (by the owner/designer/architect) with comfort in mind. There is a main staircase and a secondary staircase. The dining room table seats 8-10 and there is a charming, red,-enameled, propane stove/heater in the room. The open plan sweeps from dining to living room where there is a cathedral ceiling, large, wood-burning fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the magnificent view. The kitchen is fully equipped with a sub-zero refrigerator, main sink and bar sink (both with disposals), range, convection oven, microwave, blender, waffle-maker, and all the utensils and tools you need to prepare lovely meals and snacks. There is a large, walk-in pantry. The private master suite has a bedroom with a luxuriously comfortable queen-sized bed. The master bathroom has a king-sized bath, shower, two sinks, and sauna. The closets in the master suite are the size of an apartment in Manhattan (ok, almost, but one does have a window seat and built-in dresser). The kids have a wing all their own too with two bedrooms and two twin-sized beds in each. An adjacent sunlit, south-facing bathroom (with shower and huge bathtub) and two sinks give kids plenty of space. The media room with sofa, recliner, VCR, and CD players, and large TV monitor (with plenty of CDs but no TV connection), is next to the kid’s bedrooms. The guest room has another fabulous, hotel-quality queen-sized bed, and an adjacent bathroom with shower. There are two rooms we do not even know how to label (Bedroom? Yoga room? Ballet room? Playrooms?) Even the laundry room is huge. Throughout the house there are small crawl spaces within closets. The natural cedar decks stretch the entire west side length of the house, from north to south. The private hot tub on the deck is surrounded by madronas and evergreen trees but still has peek-a-boo views of Crescent Beach in one direction and Canada in another. There is a teak table and chairs with sun umbrella for fabulous outdoor dining, and lounge chairs, great for sunbathing. The house has a workshop, several garages, outbuildings, and a fire pit waiting for smores. There is an old fort (constructed by various generations of inventive, independent children) nestled in the woods.

Walk down the mountain past Crescent Beach to Eastsound Village, about a mile from the house, where you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, book store, and groceries. Take in a summer chamber music concert in town. Hike or bike on nearby Mount Constitution in Moran State Park or hike the reclaimed Turtle Back Mountain trail. Go kayaking, whale watching, or just wandering. Play games, finish puzzles. (This is a Bananagrams-friendly establishment!) Send your kids to classic Orkilla summer camp and be on the same island, but with some adult time of your own. Even, dare we say, do your work here. Sit at the dining room table, gazing from computer (with high speed connection) to the seemingly infinite view. It is inspirational.

The house is so very sweet that when we are there we always long to stay. It is perfect for family vacations, reunions, friend’s time away, writer’s retreats, or whatever. It is a magical, memorable place. Come, enjoy yourself here.

About Mindy Cameron

We purchased this house about seven years ago when we walked in at sunset and the view took our breath away. We are a family of four, a mother who is an architect (trained at MIT) and a father who is museum professional. The mother grew up in New Jersey and the father in Texas. We met when we were each living in San Francisco and became inextricably bound by our shared sense of humor and love of culture. About 15 years ago, we began to work together, running a reasonably successful design business doing educational-purpose projects. Of course, as our teenagers have grown, we have not gone to Orcas Island as often as we have wished, despite its incredible magnetic draw. Whenever we are there we have a fabulous, memorable time and we hate to leave. Playing, relaxing, or working there -- staring out across the water and islands. It is altogether GLORIOUS. Orcas and the house are magical.

Mindy Cameron purchased this house in 2007

Why Mindy Cameron chose Orcas Island

We live and work in Seattle and wanted to have a remote get-away house. We looked at all of the islands and rural properties we could and even considered designing and building our own home. But, the nature of building in so remote a place would entail a process that would be excruciatingly slow and we were impatient to have a place. This home was The One that we fell in love with after seeing dozens of other possibilities. So many people we know (and some we don't) have had remarkable moments on Orcas -- life-changing, inspirational, poignant moments. We are convinced that Orcas is the best and most phenomenal of the San Juan Islands. And we love this house and the island.

What makes this house unique

The floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows in the main rooms that face the incredible view are enough to want to stay forever. The spacious, commodious kitchen made a cook out of me (whereas, previously, I shunned the activity). The house with all of its rooms and closets within closets is a hide-and-seek paradise for kids, and the house is so large that you can easily find privacy or company. Every day there is something special here. The first night we stayed here, a deer ran across the deck. One day, a bald eagle settled for a while in the meadow below. Hummingbirds visit us often. In winter, looking out over an artist's dream view while being warmed by the heat of the fireplace is the best feeling in the world. Sitting in the hot tub under the stars underscored that we had made absolutely the right choice. I am not kidding. It is a dream come true.

Comfortable, Relaxing, Gorgeous View!

  • 5 of 5

We actually felt sad pulling away yesterday. I kept running back for "just one more look" at the view from your deck... It honestly was the perfect set up for our family and my brother's family, visiting from California. We so appreciated the kid friendly nature of the house with the multiple hidden cubbies full of stuffed animals, Disney movies galore, etc... The main areas were all so sophisticated and relaxed. The kitchen was lovely – so big! We used the deluxe hot tub every night… Your home provided the break we all needed!

Even though it was our first visit to Orcas Island, we feel like we found "the" spot in your home. I’m sure we’ll back.

Perfect for a family celebration

  • 5 of 5

My adult children, daughter in law, new grandson and our dog, gathered to celebrate my husband's birthday. The house was perfect. There was space for everyone to be together or to have privacy. It was quiet, comfortable, well maintained and the perfect place to enjoy the beauties of Orcas Island. We hope to return again.

What a great place to experience the San Juans

  • 5 of 5

This property is greatly understated. Between the well equipped kitchen and bedrooms to the amazing view off the deck the only thing that drew us away was the amazing surroundings we were in.

The house is close to Eastsound so daily trips to the grocery store were convenient as well as finding places for lunch and dinner.

We will definitely be staying at this property again.

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

I and 3 of my closest friends spent four nights here-- it was lovely. The view from the deck is spectacular, the hot tub so much fun, the outdoor grill great; the kitchen great for cooking and has a great propane stove which is great for heating up chilly mornings-- lots of space and all the kitchenware one might want. The beds were super comfortable. The sauna wonderful. Just a few minutes drive from everything. We couldn't have been happier.

Family reunion on Orcas Island

  • 5 of 5

This home was a perfect retreat for our family reunion. The kitchen had ample space for multiple cooks and was well appointed in terms of pots, pans, etc. (It even had good knives, often problematic in rental properties.) We loved the outdoor spaces and the huge dining room table. With four plus bedrooms it was able to accommodate three families. And Orcas Island is a special place -- we hiked, kayaked, enjoyed the many good restaurants, and just relaxed in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

Very large, private home. Lots of space.

  • 3 of 5

This home is really large, and would accommodate a large family very easily. There are lots of kid toys in every nook and cranny.

Considering the price, I was disappointed by the amenities. I didn't bring shampoo or conditioner with me, and the bathroom I was using had one of the refillable wall dispensers. It was completely empty and looked as though it hadn't been filled in a very long time. My brother told me there was a basket of half used hotel bottles in his bathroom. Not a great value for the price. Also, the fancy outdoor BBQ did not ignite and we had to use a lighter.

We had a nice stay, but in order to give an excellent review, some details need some fine tuning. Luckily, the hot tub and sauna worked great. And the home is very private and quiet.

Owner's Response: We are appreciative of this person’s compliments and comments. She says that they had “a nice stay”, and we are happy that they did. We love our home and love sharing it. It is our private home and not a hotel, but we do take our renting responsibilities seriously and are invested in making things as wonderful as possible. Since hers is an anomaly in the many appreciative reviews we have received in 3 years, we want to respond to her issues. She posted a relatively poor review of our house based upon the barbecue and the soap. While we honestly do appreciate constructive suggestions, in the past, if anyone has had issues, they have simply called us. We ask guests to do this in our User Guide. We have had our site manager come over to the house to help when necessary, and he is ready to check on something if and when a guest asks. So, again, we were honestly surprised by this review and that she did not mention any of this to us while she was there. (Please note that we did write directly to her once we received this review and we did not get a reply.) One comment has spurred us toward an improvement. We are now going to include shampoo and conditioner in each bathroom and we will remove the dispenser. Please note that although we have always provided many consumable goods, until now, we did not think that hair products were necessary to provide. The small bottles of sundry materials in the other bathroom have been there for people to use as a backup, and we are happy she found them. Still, we are sorry if she was inconvenienced, and we will make things better. About the grill, we do provide instructions in our User Guide and at the house, along with lighters, cooking tools, briquettes, lighter fluid, and even a traditional charcoal grill for those who prefer that option. People seem to be able to solve the lighting since no one has complained until now. It is an old but wonderful grill and it does work with the lighter. But we are sorry that it was a problem for them. She mentioned only two things that were imperfect. Please allow us to mention one. She had at first told us that they would be bringing a dog and then, prior to their visit, she rescinded this and asked for the pet deposit back, which we returned. However, after they left, we found dog treats in our garbage. Again, we are very happy that they did enjoy their stay. We hope that (if she or he was there) their dog did too.

Orcas is a wonderful island in one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. It is lush and mountainous, with many magnificent views from various mountain tops. There is a lovely town within walking distance from the house (and other, smaller towns on island), with shops and restaurants, good grocery stores, a hardware store, bike rentals, a skateboard park, a small cinema, one of the best chocolate shops anywhere, and a great bookstore. Local artists and artisans have studios and shops throughout Orcas. There are beautiful beaches, lakes, and a wonderful, historic state park. (Moran State Park, five miles from our house, has a historic tower at the top and exceptional 360 views.) Orcas Island is magical. It is a fabulous place to explore, hike, bike ride, drive... A mountain, purchased by the Land Trust, is open to the public for marvelous hikes. There is plenty of wildlife, such as bald eagles, deer, turkey vultures, etc. but nothing particularly dangerous to humans. An extremely delightful and classic summer camp is located on the island so that you might be able to send your kids there while you have time off nearby. There are summer concerts in the park, small festivals, book fairs, and a performance center which is the locale of a fine chamber music summer series. The island is a hang out for cultured people so the library is sweet too. (You can even get videos there.) The house and island are a perfect balance of civilized society and radiant wilderness.
