About the property

Sympathetically renovated cottage with conservatory, in farmland with lake.

Set in 17 acres of unspoilt Dorset farmland and just 5 miles from the market town of Bridport, Kingfisher Cottage is a delight for anyone who likes to get away from it all and enjoy the country life.

A traditional stone built cottage, it has been sympathetically renovated with beautiful flag stone flooring, a restful conservatory and private decking area next to the small river that runs close by. You can sit on the decking on a warm sunny day – of which there are many! – and maybe see the Kingfisher flying past.

The cottage sleeps up to four. It has one double bedroom and two sofa beds in the conservatory that can be screened off for privacy.

Kingfisher Cottage is on Lower Monkwood Farm, home to free range (happy!) pigs and a few cows as well as a beautiful lake in which you can swim or simply sit by and idle away the days in peace and quiet. We also offer clay pigeon shooting and fishing in the lake (well stocked with trout) at very reasonable prices.

About David Smith

My wife and I lived in London all our lives, but always enjoyed holidaying in Dorset and even purchased a small holiday cottage which we and our two daughters spent many a happy time in. When it came time to retire, we decided to make a permanent move to Dorset to enjoy the countryside walks, the spectacular coastline and the lovely people of West Dorset.

Why David Smith chose Dorset

Lower Monkwood Farm, in which Kingfisher Cottage sits, had everything we were looking for - a beautiful thatched farm house (although in much need of renovation!), farmland and small river running through. The farm had been neglected so we set to work on both the house, the cottage and the land itself and after much time and effort - including digging a lake - we had our dream home and a holiday cottage that many of our guests return to year after year.

What makes this cottage unique

There's always something new to see on the farm - every day brings something different. One day you may be lucky enough to see an Otter or maybe a Kingfisher, or the birds of prey that abound here. Then there's the river which changes depending on the weather, from a gentle babbling stream in summer to a roaring river in winter. And children and adults alike love to watch the piglets play in the field, often chasing each other in a game of tag!

Lovely Peaceful stay

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit and once again a fantastic peaceful stay, no-one wanted to leave. We hope to visit again next year. David is a lovely welcoming host and will treat you as a good friend. Peace and quiet by the cottage or the lake, perfect if you want to get away from it all. Children enjoyed fishing, exploring and the animals on the farm. Stars on a clear night are something to behold. Excellent quiet location within a short drive of Bridport so for us it offers a perfect base to explore the area from. Thank you once again David for having us and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Highly recommended!

A lovely, cosy, quiet cottage with a warm, welcoming host. We spent a week here with our 3 small children and we loved it. Definitely somewhere to stay next time we come to Dorset.

Historic and special house in a remote area

  • 4 of 5

The house is very special and cosy. The equipment is individual and sufficient for 4. Sleeping is a little narrow for 4, but still ok. The landlord David was very obliging and treated us as good friends. The location is very remote, but free walk to the nature is restricted by the brick walls of the farms and streets. Except for swimming and fishing in a lovely lake (10 minutes from the house), no other outdoor activities can be made directly near the house. You need to drive 15 minutes to Bridport or some villages in the North via very narrow streets and can then proceed to some very interesting places in Dorset and adjacent counties.

Surrounded by beautiful rolling farmland, yet just 5 miles from the lively market town of Bridport with it excellent fresh local produce, a wide range of restaurants and great entertainment, be it live music in the many cosy pubs, events in the Arts centre or a film in the art deco cinema.

From Bridport, it’s just a short hop to the World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast, beautiful in both sun and storms! You can’t fail to be impressed.

The surrounding countryside is great for walks, whether along the cliff tops or inland where you can walk around iron-age hill forts, visit a working mill or just enjoy the splendour of the scenery. And don’t forget to stop in one of the many local pubs for refreshments and great home cooked food, or enjoy a luscious cream tea.

And lastly, let’s not forget the people. In West Dorset, you get a warm friendly welcome wherever you go.

Other Activities: Sea Fishing and boat trips; arts and crafts; leisure centre
