The Shine House is a stilt home that sits majestically, on a secluded peninsula with only 7 houses on it. The Lane is a dead end and is privately owned, so there is no traffic other than my neighbors. The Shine House is the next to the last house on the peninsula overlooking the Gulf of Mexico to the West. Our home has water/Marsh/Sawgrasses dividing the beautiful waters, providing beautiful views from every window, since it is on a peninsula, we have 3 sides that have water views. The Westside Upper Deck is the length of the house plus 15' which provides Multi~color Sunsets every night. Outside you will find ample seating and tables that await you and your fellow vacationers, from every vantage point. 3 sides water with marsh and sawgrasses provide an environment that you have never seen in a home, and maybe won't ever find again? An Outlook Bar has been built on the West Upper Deck railing for 6 to enjoy meals looking out at the Beautiful Nature GOD created. You will get your exercise by running back and forth from deck to deck, to upper to lower and front to back trying to see what is making all the commotion in the water. Dolphins come visit almost everyday. How amazing it is to watch Ospreys hovering 20' above the surface of the water, flapping their wings according to the breeze velocity so they can hover, then dive straight down to catch their food.
My name is Kathie, my husband Mark and I have been married since 1995 and we are totally committed to each other. Mark has one Son who is married to a wonderful woman and they have a sweet little daughter that live in Florida. I have one Daughter, married to a great guy and they have 2 beautiful, teenage, daughters. I also have a Son, who is single, and has a sweet daughter as well. So we have 3 children, total, and 4 perfect granddaughters. We will be using The Shine House for family retreats starting new traditions and memories. Mark and I are total opposites, but with GOD we try to compliment each other rather than 'butt' heads. We are CHRISTians and try to put GOD ahead of everything in our lives. I have worked several places, with my last endeavor being, opening Heaven Bound CHRISTian Bookstore in 2003.I felt it was GOD's Will to open the store as a Ministry more than just another Bookstore. People were saved and healed in the bookstore, so I feel like GOD was pleased. I sold the bookstore in 2011 to a good friend that continued the Vision, GOD had put in my heart for the store. My husband, Mark, is co-owner of Honda Suzuki of Jackson, and is not ready to retire yet. We love to ride motorcycles. We also love cars especially fast, pretty cars.We love the water and all the activities that water provides, so buying The Shine House was a very good idea, but maybe premature given my husband's present responsibilities to the dealership, so that keeps him in Ohio as his main home, but I am more mobile, so I will be living in both The Shine House in Florida and also the house in Ohio. This allows me the flexibility to rent The Shine House occasionally, to vacationers when I am in Ohio.I will appreciate my vacationers to please take excellent care of my Shine House, and it's contents, because it is my home, and I am sharing my home with you and your family. Let me also add that I do not reduce my rental fee, so no need to ask. Most think I am very reasonable.
Kathie Simmons purchased this house in 2012
My husband and I love warm weather, and all the activities that warm temps provide. The Gulf has always been a preference because of the lack of commercialism. We looked online for a property to buy for about a year and a half, then during a trip to Clearwater we got serious and contacted a realtor when we had several properties we wanted to look at. The ariel photo of The Shine House, seeing that it was remote and almost surrounded by the Gulf, was totally amazing to us. We didn't dream we could ever find a property like The Shine House, let alone own it. In all our viewing homes from Myrtle Beach to both East and West Coasts of Florida, we never found a property that had both Gulf views and Sawgrasses. I love to watch the sawgrass move this way and that from the gentle breezes of the Gulf of Mexico. The Shine House overlooks the Gulf to the West, so amazing, unobstructed views of Sunsets will captivate you every evening. Water views are amazing from every window in the house, sawgrass and water/Gulf views from windows facing North (Front) and South (Back) and The Gulf/Sawgrass views are from the West (Side) of the house. Aripeka has a population of only 500 people and is remote and quite removed from todays hustle and bustle of life in the 21st century. Visiting this quiet, sleepy little fishing village is like taking a trip back into time. Come to a place where the past and present meet, The Shine House in Aripeka, Florida. Aripeka has natural, vast forests of Cabbage Palm trees are still standing that have somehow remained untouched by man. Aripeka seems to be one of Florida's best kept secrets. This Gulf coast area offers abundant sea life, and fishing, that has been the draw to the area for years. Babe Ruth spent many winter weekends here during training camps in Tampa. The Wright Brothers spent vacations here as well. Aripeka has kept its natural resources untouched by man, so wildlife is still abundant here. Locals pride themselves in its quaintness.
We bought the house for its unique location 'IN' the Gulf of Mexico, and the house was a pleasant surprise that came with the property. We fell totally in love with the views from every direction, from every vantage point. Under the house, in the house, outside the house, on the front porch, sitting on the bench on the front sea wall, sitting on our own boat dock in our aderondack chairs, sunning on the upper south deck, looking at the sunset from the 60' long west, covered deck. I saw Dolphins playing in the Gulf while viewing the property. I was overjoyed to have found such a place, to someday live. The seclusion of the peninsula, the protected Sawgrass areas, where nothing will ever be built or disturbed, were all very important to us. Over populated areas are not appealing to us, so this property was simply amazing. Our neighbors have adopted us as part of the family. They are very friendly and neighborly. I love inside The Shine House's views of the Gulf from almost every room. Every room has Gulf and/or Water/Sawgrass views with wildlife so abundant, that a zoo would love to have access to. The Gulf is literally our front yard and back yard. When you sit on our boat dock in the back yard, you are actually sitting 'IN' The Gulf of Mexico. There is a swim ladder on the dock that allows you access to swim right there. So our pool...is actually the Gulf of Mexico. You can see the uninhabited island, rowing distance away, that has a sandy beach to sun bathe, in the shallow water, with 2 portable lounge chairs that are provided. Unbelievably private! We love, love, love the seclusion that the Shine House offers, but we also love that as remote as this unique property is, it is quite close to everything. Shopping is amazing, just 2 miles away. In fact, there are 125 restaurants within 6.5 miles and 6 Cinema complexes within 11.2 miles. No matter what you may want to eat or shop for, it is just minutes away from The Shine House. This property offers so much diversity.
What an amazing place! The Shine House is right on the edge of the water, and it was so peaceful and quiet we could hear the dolphins and breathe as they dived. From the deck we saw otter, bald eagles, and beautiful sunsets. From the master bedroom, we even saw a "moonset" as the full moon glowed orange and sank in to the Gulf just as the sun was rising in the east.
If you enjoy "flat-water" kayaking (as we prefer) you can't find any better. We kayaked along the edge of the Gulf and, when the tide was high, we spent hours in the marshes. We each had the thrill of having a manatee swim right by our kayak, silent and BIG just below the surface.
The bird-watching is great! The house is located near many stops on the Great Florida Birding Trail. But there really isn't a need to drive to an official stop. We watched the rarely-seen Least Bittern and Virginia Rails from the front yard. There is a short and pleasant walk through the neighborhood for dog walking. For longer walks (allowing dogs on a 6-ft leash) and bike rides, the 11,000-acre Weeki Wachee Preserve is a 5-minute drive away.
As to the house itself, it is immaculately maintained and fully equipped -- from kayaks to kitchen. Kathie and her local caretaker were responsive to all our questions and needs. Kathie has decorated the house with nature art and lovely personal touches, which made us feel truly welcomed to her home.
We felt the same warm welcome to the area -- the year-round neighbors ready with pleasant conversation and local information, a wave and a smile from almost every passing car.
Thank you, Kathie, for sharing your home.
The Shine House lives up to every description, photo and review. Kathie has provided a retreat that is head and shoulders above the rest. Her home is immaculately clean and well stocked. She is super helpful with suggestions and very responsive to questions. Over the course of the week I didn't see as much wildlife as other guests as the creatures are more abundant when the air and water temps are cooler. But my surprise adventure on the last day made up for it all when my kayak was suddenly surrounded by 5 dolphin who entertained me for 45 minutes.
You will enjoy every minute of your stay at the Shine House. It's no wonder Kathie has repeat guests.
Our week at the Shine House far exceeded my expectation. The home is gorgeous (even nicer than the photos online), the entire property is immaculate, the views are breathtaking. We watched birds fly in and out and around, we were able to see dolphins (even a tiny baby one) every day, we watched a thunderstorm or two roll through, and witnessed marvelous sunsets every evening. The property is serene, scenic and secluded, but close enough for dining and shopping, if you wish. We ventured out for a scalloping trip with Angling Adventures Charters (it was EXTREMELY close by and Captain Steve was GREAT). At the Shine House we were able to have our own private adventures in the provided kayaks/canoe to the many keys nearby and through the surrounding tributaries. But, the beauty of the Shine House goes far beyond the spectacular views. My family stayed "together" the entire time. In a day and age when everyone seems to be going in different directions, that is a feat. Even though there is wi-fi and there are tv's in every room and lots of different places to be in the house, my family STAYED TOGETHER. When we cooked inside or grilled outside or were having morning coffee on the balcony or sitting on the pier or swimming in the canal or kayaking, we were all together. Our children gravitated to us whatever we were doing. This was a special trip for me, a trip of a life time. I don't think you'd ever find a better owner to deal with than Kathie. She is awesome and I'm confident that it's her prayers that cultivate the tranquil peace that surrounds the Shine House. I hope to make it back some time, but whatever comes, I will forever cherish our time at the Shine House.
We just spent 3 great, great weeks at Kathie's Shine House. Everything was wonderful from the very beginning. More than lived up to the description. The location on the water, spotless, interior comfort and decoration, all the extras and amenities, and more. Kathie was so nice and easy to work with. We did not have a single problem but stayed in touch with her just to tell her what we were doing in this great area. She loves this house and so do we.
Celebrated our wedding anniversary here sitting on one of the decks watching one of many fantastic sundowns and later a starlit evening sky. Great place to simply relax and enjoy life. We definitely recommend this property and plan to return early next year.
We walked for hours, went canoeing and kayaking, fishing, saw dozens of bald eagles every day, owls, wild deer, dolphins, manatees, ibis, pelicans and more. A couple of friends came by to see us and did not want to leave. Simply the greatest place.
Our week away at the "Shine" house was a fantastic, memory making adventure!
I'll have to say right off that the owner is the most responsive and friendly person we have ever experienced with VRBO. She replied immediately to questions and went a step beyond with information to make sure we got a full and enjoyable stay in the area.
Our favorite things about the house:
-The view! We spent a lot of time sitting on the deck which wraps around 3 sides of the house. I spent most of my time looking west to the gulf and pondering where we would take our boats. The west side does look over the roof of an adjacent property, but it's so much lower that you don't really notice it. The sunsets were amazing! We saw a lot of wildlife including dolphins.
-The dock (south side) and sea wall (north side): We spent several hours at different times of the day fishing. We caught a variety of fish including mangrove snappers. We found a bait shop in Hernando beach that sells live shrimp. (If you do this I recommend a bucket with an aerator and put a frozen water bottle in to keep the shrimp alive longer.)
-The decorations in the house: The house is loaded with fantastic artwork, sculpture and knick knacks that were a lot of fun to look at. I saw something new everyday we were there.
-The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. I was glad that I found coffee available the first morning after a long, long drive the day and evening before.
-The kayaks: I didn't personally use them since we had brought our own motorized canoes, but my daughter and her boyfriend had a blast with them.
-The bay: It was stormy at times during our week, but we were able to get our boats in the water a few times. We had up close encounters with dolphins which thrilled everyone. I really liked our trip out to the western island (Indian Key?) There are a few rocks here and there so we took our first trips at high tide and took mental notes of where the snags were. We pretty much zipped around after that.
Our favorite things about the area:
-This is the third year in a row we have gone scalloping with Capt. Keith at Bulldog Charters. We always get our limit when we go out with him. I would suggest calling a few weeks ahead to reserve a spot with him. He is a very popular (and likable) guide here.
-Kayaking the Weeki Watchee river: this is a bucket list kind of thing. I don't think I ever seen a more beautiful place on this earth. I would suggest using the Kayak Shack.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Shine House. The home was beautifully decorated and stocked with everything we needed. It felt just like staying in someone's home, not a rental. It truly did feel like old time Florida, so quiet and peaceful. I loved the different sunsets every night. Having the kayaks and canoe on hand was a real treat too, make sure you go out early morning or evening or else it gets pretty hot. Kathie, the owner, was a joy to work with, we loved this vacation.
Aripeka has long been forgotten from the hustle and bustle of modern day stresses of life and commercialism. This village has been called 'A Sleepy Little Fishing Town'. It has one country store, Norfleets, which has a private boat launch that you can use for a $5 fee, and also we have the historic Post Office.
Several Famous people have vacationed here frequently. Babe Ruth used to spend his weekends here in Aripeka (while his baseball training camp was in Tampa), because of the wonderful fishing and uniqueness of the village. Also the Wright Brothers vacationed here for the fantastic fishing. Famous artist, James Rosenquist lives here as well. Aripeka has 'The Old Florida' flavor here, quiet, light breezy days, relaxing, fishing, hiking, Wild untouched Nature is what Airipeka is about. As you drive on Osowaw, which is a very quaint 2 lane road, toward Aripeka, the speed limit drops to 35, and you go through a canopy of tropical trees to our 1/4 mile private lane.
Orlando is just 90 minutes away, so Disney World is available for a day trip. Also in Clearwater, about an hour away is The Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where Winter lives. Winter is the Dolphin that lost part of her tail because of an infection that set up from a Clam trap injury. Winter had a heart warming family movie made about her called, 'Dolphin Tale' which I have provided the DVD in the House so you can get to know her before you go visit the Aquarium.
Area Shopping is Fantastic, and only 3 miles away on Highway 19, includes Pier 1 Imports, Walmart, Publix, Macy's, JC Penney, Beull's and Beull's Outlet, Belk, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, and Office Max to name a few.
All kinds of Restaurants are also just 3 short miles away, including Cracker Barrel, Panera Bread, McDonalds, Pizza Shops, Chinese, Mexican, Greek, Japanese Steak House, Chillies, Red Lobster and of course the Restaurants that only the locals know about...Brian's, R Beach, and Bayport Inn all where sea food is not only featured but also perfected..
Several Nature preserves are close by, Bayport Pier, is where I saw my first sea turtle...He was huge...
I see Dolphins almost every day...from the West Upper Deck, they are so playful with one another...and play for an hour. Manatees are seen from both front and back sea walls, along with Crabs, Needle Heads, Mullet, and Striper. Scallop fishing season is wonderful, and is not allowed further North of Aripeka, (season ends last of October).
Why not pack a picnic basket and take the canoe to one of the several uninhabited small Islands within rowing distance from The Shine House? One of the Islands has a sandy beach, where you can enjoy sunbathing privately...Just think...your own private Beach...where else can you get that...?? I provide portable lounge chairs to take with you in the canoe for laying out in the clear water on the sandy floor. Wading is great, just take some old tennis shoes to protect your feet. Swimming in the Gulf is pretty awesome...just anchor the canoe...and jump in...it is very shallow for miles, so no fear about being lost at sea..
I provide 2 bicycles for bike riding. Osowaw is a scenic bike route, (State Route 595). Just minutes away, is the Weeki Wachee Nature preserve where you can go hiking or bicycling, bird watching etc.
I provide 2 kayaks as well, so that you can experience kayaking in the Gulf or close to the shore where the waters are divided by marshes and sawgrasses, where lots of wildlife take refuse and feed.
The Muti~color Sunsets off the West Side Upper Deck are unbelievable, overlooking the Horizon of the Gulf of Mexico. I guarantee you will not want to leave this property for any reason. You will never tire of looking at all the wildlife that pays no attention to you being there. I have a boat dock on the back seawall, and both my neighbors on each side of me have boat launches, so getting your boat into the water is not a problem nor is tying your boat up to the dock until your next adventure.
Remember to pack all your camera gear, because you will turn into a photographer while here. Also bring binoculars if you have them. So you can enjoy watching birds, dolphins, etc. Boating, Fishing, Relaxing, Nature watching, Swimming, Canoeing, Kayaking, or just taking in the many views from every vantage point in and around my beautiful home. So come to Aripeka and feel like a local for a week. Leave all your stress back home...I guarantee it will be there when you return...But for the week you are here, Be Blessed by the fantastic show GOD will provide for you in this 'Nature's Coast of Florida'. Aripeka is where you feel like you have taken a trip back in time. My neighbors are like family just like the old days. I'm sure you will enjoy them also. My next door neighbor, Craig, just might go fishing with you in the canoe if you ask him to. Perhaps he will show you some of his best fishing spots. He catches huge red fish off my front seawall.
