|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Smaller end of Pier Cottage sleeping up to 4 in 2 bedroooms, 1 double, one twin.
A pair of old stone coastguard cottages renovated to a high standard in a unique setting 25 yards from their own shingle beach with breathtaking views over the lovely Kenmare Estuary off the southern tip of the beautiful 'Ring of Kerry' in south-west Ireland.
Pier Cottage can be rented throughout the year as 2 separate units or one interconnecting cottage. West End sleeps up to 7 in 3 bedrooms and East End up to 4 - 1 double 1 twin.
The countryside immediately surrounding Castlecove is ideally suited for all types of walking, ranging from gentle strolls along lovely sandy beaches to more serious hikes over craggy hills. The famous 'Kerry Way' walk takes you along the ridge of hills, all the way from Waterville to Kenmare and is well signed, but still wonderfully unspoiled.
You can swim, row and shrimp by the cottage or just relax and watch the seals!. There are several sandy beaches within ten minutes drive.
My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s after coming across a 'for sale' sign whilst holidaying in the area. It was love at first sight and since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!
We purchased and restored this pair of old coastguard cottages when they came on the market in the early 1990s. Pier Cottage has a unique, magical location situated below Westcove House with its own shingle beach.
Pier Cottage is on the water's edge and immerses you in the wild natural beauty of Kerry. It is ideal for all kinds of activities such as hill-walking, sightseeing, watersports or writing and perfect for a quiet secluded break. Watch the seals playing on the rocks and the magical ever-changing light. As the sun sets over the Atlantic, you can nestle up by the fire, guarded against the elements and listen to the cries of the curlews...whilst you sip and Irish whiskey!
… a big thank you for looking after us and being so accommodating with providing the downstairs room for my parents. They LOVED it! Pier Cottage was amazing and coziest place I have certainly stayed! The stormy weather only added to the charm of it and howling wind made us doubly enjoy sitting by the fire, sipping whiskey and playing many of the games provided at the cottage! Truly perfect place to escape the everyday stresses and spend some quality time with family!
The area was so peaceful and beautiful.. It was really tough to leave!

Better then you can imagine ! The surf lulls you to sleep. There is a real fire to have drinks by and play board games or read a book and it has all the comforts of home dishwasher and clothes washer. Bed even has a bed warmer. We had a sweet time.
I stayed here in the beginning of November with my wife and our 2 friends. From the moment we pulled into the driveway, we knew we had found some place truly special. We spent the majority of our time just sitting on the rocks watching the seals. This property is located on a 'dark sky reserve'. You've never seen so many stars! The caretakers were extremely welcoming and kind. All of their recommendations for sightseeing and restaurants were excellent. The directions given from the airport to the cottage were flawless. I'm already planning a return trip back in a couple of years.
This was our 5th trip to Ireland. We had wanted to see more of the Ring of Kerry and what a way to do it-an 8 day stay right on the Bay of Kenmare. The Pier Cottage is a restored coast-guard station and would be best described as a 'duplex'-we had the east side with 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and a kitchen, dining table and living-room in a great-room. While able to sleep 4 comfortably it was perfect for my wife and me. There is a peat/wood-burning fireplace in the comfortable living-room with a generous amount of both in a covered outdoor storage bin. I had indicated our particular desire for peat which Michael our caretaker provided for relaxing peat fires each evening.
This brings us to Michael and Katherine our property's caretakers who acted more like our personal hosts providing not only a warm welcome with lots of information of local interest but also making reservations for us to travel to Skellig Michael (one of 2 World Heritage Sites in Ireland) as well as information for the Gap of Dunloe in near-by Killarney (about an hour's drive north-eastthrough the beautiful Molls Gap, the Ladies View and the Killarney National Park.) These are 2 not-to-miss day events, weather and health permitting (Skellig Michael and the Gap of Dunloe). Katherine will also provide home-made Irish dishes on request for a modest fee. Communication with Katherine was quick and simple via the Pier's on site Wi-Fi.
The Pier Cottage is situated on a grassy terrace gently sloping to the bay with off-shore seals for your personal entertainment! Despite our best intentions to use the onsite row-boat, we never had a chance given all of the other things to see and do. There are several good pubs in adjoining villages within a short and easy drive-our favorite was the Blind Piper in Catherdaniel. As you can imagine, a rental car is critical for a full Ring of Kerry holiday experience-in our opinion it is a must.
Other things not to miss include: Valentia Island (another day-trip), Derrynane Bay and Beach with Derry cemetery and ruins, the villages of Sneem with several quaint shops including Quills Wollens, and Waterville with the Fisherman's Bar (delicious seafood), the town of Kenmare to the north with its Wednesday street market, colorful buildings and Kenmore lace (above the very helpful Visitor's Center with an abundance of local maps).
All in all-a beautiful place with beautiful people providing a wonderful experience. We would indeed return to the Pier Cottage.
It was our first visit and hopefully not our last. A family of four (2 adults, 2 children). We had one week at the Garden Cottage and one week at Pier Cottage (also owned by the family). It was a wonderful holiday, the locations of both were cottages were so beautiful, especially Pier Cottage with its view of the sea. The cottages were very comfortable and cosy, it all made for a truly relaxing holiday.
The properties are in a fantastic location to discover the surrounding area, with the stunning beach at Derrynane under 10 minutes away by car or a walk along the Kerry Way over hills with breathtaking views. It all made for a truly relaxing holiday.
We have stayed at East End, Pier Cottage on two occasions and both times had wonderful relaxing weeks. It is such an idyllic location – quiet but within easy reach of beautiful beaches and scenic car rides. We whiled away the hours in front of the Cottage and were delighted when seals appeared in the waters below. We were fascinated to see the statue of Charlie Chaplin in nearby Waterville (he was a regular visitor). The Lakes of Killarney are within easy reach by car and are spectacular, especially if the mountain route is taken. A trip to the Skelligs was unmissable – the birds and seal sanctuary something only seen before on TV. There are so many suggestions for outings that many visits would be needed. Pier Cottage is the perfect holiday base for families or couples. (ET)
Ein einfach ausgestattetes, aber wunderschön gelegenes Anwesen, direkt am Meer. Alles Notwendige ist vorhanden. Sehr nette Vermieterin!
Pier Cottage is situated 15kms west of Sneem and 15 kms east of Watervillle (with its championship golfcourse ) overlooking the Kenmare Estuary in South Kerry - an ideal location from which to explore this magical part of Ireland.
You can row, fish and shrimp from rocks just by Pier Cottage; or go deep sea, lake or river fishing. In summer there is a fun watersports centre nearby; 5 excellent golf courses within 40 minutes drive - see details below -, horseriding for all ages and endless beautiful walks.
There is plenty to see and do within 15 minutes drive of Westcove:
Visit DERRYNANE HOUSE & NATIONAL PARK, ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house and grounds have been preserved and are open to the public for most of the year. The house is surrounded by spectacular sub-tropical gardens & the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes. Don’t forget to pick up a map of the ‘FAIRY TRAIL’ and see how many ‘fairy houses’ you can discover in the gardens!
In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a timeless pub, frequented by locals - or go to The Blind Piper – a younger atmosphere with excellent, home-cooked food and live music on Thursday evenings. In summer, there’s a bustling market in the Community Centre between 10 and 12.30 on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts.
The largest and arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, STAIGUE FORT is about 3 miles above Castlecove, less than 15 minutes drive away. It is worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking.
A boat trip to SKELLIG ISLANDS, a Unesco World Heritage site, is a must! Rising majestically from the sea, Skellig Michael towers 218m above sea level and on the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skellig 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.
Kerry is a paradise for walkers. Stroll along the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane or venture up into the hills and follow the well signed 'Kerry Way'.
40 minutes drive east along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare Estuary, is the picturesque town of KENMARE, well-known for its varied and tempting shops and teeming with excellent bars and restaurants ... a popular choice for the ladies, especially on Wednesdays when there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouth-watering selection of cheeses, pates and other home-made delicacies!
Drive south from Kenmare over spectacular mountain passes, to explore the Beara Peninsula which has so much to offer visitors, from the imposing stately home, BANTRY HOUSE, the SCULPTURE PARK and a selection of beautiful gardens ...
The one hour drive to KILLARNEY is probably the most scenic in Ireland - a winding road with magnificent views over its famous lakes and mountains. The town itself has become overly popular, teeming with tourists, huge hotels and souvenir shops, however it's well worth visiting Muckross House and Gardens and the 15th century Muckross Abbey on the lakes shortly before Killarney.
Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary and most serve great value home-cooked food. The whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome. Kerry people are known for their wit... you will be drawn into conversation with the locals .... so enjoy making new friends, the 'craic' (fun) & stories ..and more stories!! Don't forget to catch a live music session one evening!
