A Day in the Life at Sugar Beach

Start your morning with a barefoot stroll along the surf on Hawaii’s longest beach and feel the warm white sand between your toes. In the spring you will most likely see a humpback whale or two breaching offshore, and you’ll see Hawaiian sea turtles most anytime of the year. Finish your walk with a dip in the warm waters of Maalaea bay or swim in the heated saltwater pool at sugar beach resort. A soak in the hot tub might feel even better.

Enjoy breakfast while gazing at the ocean from your lanai or through the large window next to your dining table. The menu includes fresh apple bananas, papaya, and mangoes from the famous Kihei farmer’s market, just a short walk from your condo.

The day presents a palette of activities. Take a cruise out to watch whales jumping in the air or dolphins following your boat. Snorkel off Molokini island. Learn to surf. Go shopping in the old whaler town of Lahaina. Take a drive to the north shore, visit the retro-town of Paia and have lunch at the world-famous mama’s fish house. Or, if you’re really up for an experience, drive all the way to heavenly Hana and swim in the seven sacred pools. See the sunrise over the crater on Haleakala. Play one of Maui’s world class golf courses. Or what the heck, just kick back on the beach all day.

It is 6:00 pm and time for watching the sun set over the west Maui mountains which is conveniently viewed from your lanai. The sky turns the color of a Mai tai as you relax in the warmth of the tropical evening. Decisions, decisions. Will it be a quiet night listening to the crashing surf or dinner at one of Maui’s fabulous restaurants? Whatever the choice you can be sure the night will end with the sounds of the ocean lulling you to sleep. Life is good.

Oh, and a few words about your island home: sugar beach 312 is a highly desirable corner unit so you have ocean views from two sides and lots of air and light filling your living area. Even the bedroom has a view of Haleakala. Your lanai overlooks the pool as well as the ocean and provides gorgeous sunset watching. Features include:

About Roy Bruder

I first came to Hawaii in 1973 and fell immediately in love. I started a business on Oahu and later lived on Maui for 8 years. I retired 17 years ago and began traveling. I am now a full time world traveler but always return to the islands when I circle around to this part of the globe. This photo, taken in Alberobello, Italy, is me with my 3 loves--my 2 beautiful daughters and my '76 Westfalia Bus.

Roy Bruder purchased this condo in 2012

Why Roy Bruder chose Kihei

Sugar Beach has the perfect location. You are close enough to all the great restaurants of Wailea, Maalaea, and Lahaina, close to the shopping center in Kahului with everything from Costco to Whole Foods. I don't even bother renting a car when I'm here. There is a bus stop just a short walk away which will get you most places on the island. And, it isn't bad living right on the beach.

What makes this condo unique

I looked at dozens of condos before I walked into 312 and instantly knew it was the one for me. It was so bright and airy where others seemed cramped and dark. The side window looking out at the ocean was the killer and the fact that it has a larger bedroom than most of the other units was a big plus as well.

Beautiful Condo, Beautiful View

  • 5 of 5

This was a really great place to stay - especially if you are going more to relax the beach was not all that busy which was great!

As for the Condo, just as nice as advertised - what a view! Very nice kitchen and the bed was very comfortable. The concierge was very helpful as well, they can set up tons of activities and also rent paddleboards, etc. we spent half our trip in Kihei and half in Lahaina - Kihei is better for relaxing, has some bars/nightlife but nothing like Front Street in Lahaina, but the beaches in Lahaina are PACKED where as Kihei was much more private just FYI if you are weighing out different locations. Kihei has a great charm, and this property was wonderful in every way - would definitely reccomend to anyone considering staying in Kihei!

Clean, well-kept, retirement/resort condo community vibe.

  • 3 of 5

This single bedroom condo is pretty standard. It's well-kept and clean and has most of what you need.

Pros: The price is reasonable. Clean and mellow pool and hot tub area. Quick access to the beach. The grass area is nice to lounge/layout on. BBQ area is clean and maintained daily. Staff is pleasant and hard-working. Partial ocean view from the balcony, full pool view. Massage staff onsite.

Cons: Bedroom shares a wall with elevator shaft, pretty noisy at night until about midnight. The bed isn't that comfortable. The sheets are pretty bad, they're cheap and rough. The curtains don't block street lights and hallway lights, it would be nice if they were blackout curtains. Many of the lawn chairs are broken/missing support straps. There's limited sandy area on the beach, the water breaks nearly up to the vegetation so there's no room to lay out on the beach. This isn't a good for snorkeling, but just south about 15-20 minutes there are lots of good areas.

Owner's Response: Sorry to hear your expectations were not met. It is surprising to me given 5 years of operating this vacation rental and nearly 60 five star reviews with zero complaints. The mattress is a brand new memory foam and was quite expensive. I have stayed there many times and quite honestly never even realized the elevator was close by. Your suggestion for blackout curtains is a good one and I will certainly speak with the resort management regarding the lawn chairs.

Awesome Location

  • 5 of 5

Unit had everything we needed. Great local bakery, farmers market, and shaved ice location a short walk down the beach. Beach was beautiful and calm; many people playing with toddlers in the water. There is some reef about 100 yards out that is great for snorkling. If you stay still in the water long enough giant turtles will just pop up for air next to you. The beach is situated on a flat stretch between Haliakala on the left and the West Maui mountain on the right. Unit was clean and well equipped with a great view. Property overall was well managed and clean. The grounds crew is out every morning to pick up every leaf that has fallen from the breeze. There is an events team on site that we booked a helicopter tour and a stand up paddle board with. Kehei seemed as centrally located as you can get without staying at the airport. Overall we had a great time!

sugar beach

  • 5 of 5

This condo was perfect. You have a fantastic view of the water. The condo is very clean, has all the amenities you need, snorkel, towels, beach chairs, coolers and boogie boards. The waves right out front are perfect for a beginner. There are tons of lounging chairs at the pool or on the grass as well. If you are cooking, there are nice clean pots, pans, utensils and dishes. The patio is perfect for early morning coffee and you get an incredible view of the sunset. Sugar beach is at a perfect location, close enough to Lahaina, Kihei, Kahului, if you want to go into Costco or Target etc. I would stay at this condo again for sure!!!
