Birds & Bees Cottage, as the name implies is a romantic stone cottage with shingle roof trimmed with white gingerbread. It has a king sized 4 poster bed draped in netting, antique furniture, a huge 30' x 8' verandah with a hammock for those afternoon naps. Lovely views across the tropical garden filled with an assortment of flowers and trees with many birds flitting through. There is a palm fringed pool shared with Sapodilla cottage also in the 2 acre garden. Both cottages are very private and peaceful and well separated from each other.
I sailed into English Harbour in 1967 and fell in love with the island. I built my house in 1969 in the old colonial style, and later built a cottage for my mother, and much later a small guest cottage. Unfortunately my husband and I lost our pensions to a very bad investment, and now I am renting out both cottages. My husband and I are both keen sailors, riders (I started the Springhill Riding Club just nearby in 1987) We love our three dogs and our 2 acre garden which we have filled with indigenous flowering plants and trees.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1969
We love Falmouth for its peaceful green location, it feels a long way from everywhere, but is only 5 minutes drive to lots of activities and night life - the best of both worlds.
Birds & Bees (we have had several engagements happen here!) is peaceful and quiet and yet near so many lively bars, restaurants, etc. There is a Mediterranean port feeling to the Yacht Club Marina with its coffee bars & boutiques and mega yachts, and yet it is only a few minutes away! You can spend the day by the pool, swinging in a hammock or at the beach, and at night enjoy a delicious dinner and dancing under the stars in one of the many restaurants in the Harbour.
We again thoroughly enjoyed our vacation at Birds & Bees. Every day was a perfect, if we went to the beach, went to the harbor, or just stayed and enjoyed the pool. Janie and Geoffrey were the perfect hosts and made the whole experience very comfortable. This was our third stay in Antigua and couldn't imagine staying anywhere else. The Falmouth part of the island is our favorite and Birds &a Bees a wonderful place to stay.
I needed a quiet and relaxed place to write a book - and I found it! This is perfect for a long stay, out-of-season - when the island is quieter and you can really enjoy the beauty of the place and the friendliness of the people. So the weather is less predictable and some restaurants are closed - but it is well worth it in terms of all the benefits of a slower pace and no crowds (wonderfully empty beaches!). The cottage is great for long term occupation - good for working inside or on the veranda (to the sounds of birds and the wonderful vista of tropical gardens and sea) and it was a pleasure to self-cater. I liked the local shop (fresh local veg and keep an eye open for when fresh fish comes in - and try their ginger beer! - but also ask Janie about the local fruit and veg stall) and found much greater range of food available than I had expected. In hosts Janie and Geoffrey you have all the expertise and knowledge of the island you could wish for - as well as the most sympathetic and welcoming of hpsts that I could have asked for. Do take time to ride at the stables (Spring Hill) just below the house - and otherwise, enjoy! I spent one month here and it was not long enough!!! Thank you to everyone: especially Janie and Geoffrey. I look forward to a longer stay in the future!.
My husband and I were a little concerned staying in a cottage with no AC in the middle of the summer but the ocean breeze kept it cool. In fact, I slept soundly, soothed by the peepers singing. We loved all the wildlife - birds and lizards that greeted us daily as well as the dogs. Having the pool on site was a fabulous way to end our daily excursions. Janie and Geoffrey were the perfect hosts. Always responsive to our requests and inquiries and an invaluable wealth of information about the island. Every recommendation they had was spot on! The island was so much fun to explore and everyone we met was friendly. I highly recommend a trip to Antigua and staying at the Birds and Bees!
Well, what can we say that has not been said already. We have just had a most wonderful two weeks at this beautiful place. Apart from us both arriving with bad colds we soon recuperated and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location, the accommodation, the island and the local people were great and our hosts helped make a memorable holiday and we shall definitely be returning again.
The peace and quiet along with the nearby Falmouth Harbour with plenty of great bars and eateries, fabulous beaches were just what we wanted and our 4 x 4 made for some great drives around the island. It was all so much more fun than staying in flashy all inclusive resort.
Many thanks to Janie and Geoffrey and their lovely dogs for a great holiday and to anyone contemplating The Birds & Bees, do not hesitate.

We chose to self cater because we wanted somewhere where we could chill and relax, and go out and see the island, visit different places and not be stuck to one place or piece of beach. Snorkelling was important and the self catering option allowed us to travel to different beaches.
We chose the cottage because of the positive previous reviews, the fact that we would have access to a local person for support and ideas if required. because it had wifi and a pool, for a price that was affordable.
The cottage met our expectations and exceeded them. The cottage is very well equipped for self catering, and had extras like fluffy towels, shampoo, candles, hair dryer, robes, that made the stay more comfortable and meant more room in the suitcase. The bed was really comfy, the verandah wonderful, we ate and sat here and looked at the lovely view. The visiting birds and geckos were fun, and the bird feeder meant lots of hummingbirds everyday. The kitchen had all required stuff plus a blender (banana smoothies, yum) and coffee maker. There is a big fridge and freezer which we filled from the excellent supermarkets.
We loved having the dogs for company, they are real characters. We felt very safe in the cottage which was important to us.
What we didn't know about before arriving was the superb location of the cottage. We had looked at a villa in the Half Moon Beach area and when we visited there we felt it was a bit remote. In terms of access to lots of restaurants, take outs and supermarkets, the location of this cottage is hard to beat. In addition we were close to a number of beaches for snorkelling and our favourite (Galleon Beach) was just 10-15 minutes away. Our daily schedule was usually a leisurely breakfast, snorkelling in the morning, take out or home for lunch, relaxing on the verandah or by the pool in the afternoon, then a meal in or out. We got a 4x4 car from Titi which was perfect for the trip (petrol is very cheap for UK people which was a bonus)
Janie was the ideal hostess, on hand if required (for converters etc) but left us alone otherwise.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it would be our first choice of accommodation in Antigua
We booked birds and bees cottage for 2 weeks and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The cottage is exactly as shown. A very generous provision welcome package greeted us. From the nautical themed pillows throughout to the beautiful bed linens and netting - everything says "relax and enjoy." The kitchen was well supplied - the blender was in daily use, breakfast smoothies with wonderful mangos and bananas bought at local stands and then afternoon rum drinks blended and enjoyed poolside. The pool is best enjoyed by sitting in each of the several sitting areas, each treats you with a different view of the grounds and harbour. Floating around in the pool is possibly the best stress reliever, unless you are stretched out in the fabulous poolside gazebo gazing at the birds or watching the clouds float by. We loved our morning coffee on our porch, the birds entertained and when we put a shallow bowl out on railing with water, they splashed around joyously. At night, we lit the candles on the railing, tuned the radio to English Harbour radio and listened jazz while we counted stars.
The dogs are a delight and always ready with wagging tails to welcome us back after a day or evening out. The beaches are lovely. We especially enjoyed the beaches on the Southwest coast. Fig Rd drive is beautiful and well worth checking out. We loved Gaellon Beach and snorkeld the far right side of beach around rocks. The water is clear and it's easy in with fish to greet you right away.
Trappas was a favorite spot to eat- close to cottage, friendly, great menu options, generous portions and good prices. Grace before meals was good for local roti. Life on the Corner is also close with an interesting menu. If you would like to splurge - go to Boom and don't miss Sheer Rocks, a unique spot.
Our hosts, Geoffrey and Janie were delightful! Always ready to answer a question and just a wealth of knowledge about Antigua and island happenings. Our only regret is not having even more time to chat and hear tales of sailing the Mermaid and the many islands that Geoffrey and Janie have visited.
We LOVED our time here and have great pictures and wonderful memories!
