About Susannah Adlington
My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s … since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!
Susannah Adlington purchased this House in 1962
Why Susannah Adlington chose Caherdaniel
Westcove is very dear to our family - we have spent many years upgrading and improving Westcove House, and renovating the Stables, Garden Cottage and Pier Cottage whilst retaining their character and charm. The income we receive from renting out our properties at Westcove when we ourselves are not here, helps with the ever-increasing costs involved with the upkeep of period properties, whilst hopefully enabling us to share this much loved, unique and magical place with others for many more generations to come. We are aware that you, our visitors, will all have different requirements and interests, so we try to be as flexible as possible to ensure your stay at Westcove surpasses all your expectations.
What makes this House unique
Westcove and the surrounding area is teeming with history, character and charm...there is so much to see and do. If you choose to stay home the gardens and terraces are magical places for dining or relaxing whilst admiring the views over the harbour and hills beyond. Even sitting by a window, the scenery and light is always changing as cloud shadows move with the wind across the water and bog-lands. The stresses and cares of the world just melt away ....

What a lovely setting!
Westcove house is pretty amazing, from the lovely setting (having good weather helped) to the history and character of the house, all wonderful. We were a group of 23 (5 families) with children ranging from 5 to 17. We had a lovely time in the house with fun and games in the evening and walks/runs around the local area plus plenty to keep everyone occupied a little further afield (Eclipse Ireland - Adventure center).
Thanks Michael for this review...so glad you all enjoyed your Easter weekend at Westcove...despite the 'variable weather'! Do spoil yourselves with some of Katherine's delicious cooking next time!....S.
An exquisite example of genteel Irish country life
Our family reserved and fully utilized the 3 buildings of this elegant Property for a week in June, 2015 when we gathered for a celebration and remembrance of the life of our son who loved this part of Kerry more than any place on earth. What a joyous and wonderful week! The staff could not have been more accommodating, addressing our every need; the meals that were prepared for us (with seating of up to 50 people on occasion) were delicious, and the facilities were perfectly suited to the multinational and broad age range of guests who joined us. I would highly recommend this vacation/respite spot to anyone!
Amazing Family Visit!
We recently returned from 12 days at the Westcove properties! 33 of us joined together to celebrate the amazing life of the family patriarch who would have turned 90 in April! The trip was originally planned for this milestone event but when a sudden illness took him from us earlier this year, the family felt we should still go forward with our plans. And we are so glad we did! Westcove was nothing short of perfect! The accommodations were comfortable, clean and provided the perfect alternative to a typical hotel vacation. Katherine and the staff were friendly and warm and exceptionally helpful, both throughout the planning process and our stay. And staying in one location allowed us to have the comfort of our own bedrooms and plenty of space to join together for meals and socializing. And the 17 grandkids all got to bunk together, an added bonus. I cannot say enough to truly explain how perfect our visit was! Well worth a visit and very reasonable. You won't be disappointed! Ireland and Westcove were a wonderful vacation we will always remember!
The Perfect Alternative Wedding Venue
We were looking for something different from the usual wedding venue and when we first found Westcove we knew we were on to something. When we finally had a chance to visit the property and meet with Suzannah and Katherine and discuss with them the ideas we had for our wedding, we knew we had found what we wanted.
Westcove House is such an amazing property and is absolutely ideal for a couple that wants to create their own wedding - from scratch. With plenty of help from friends, family and Katherine and her team we pulled of an amazingly unique and special wedding with trad in the main house and DJ and dancing in the Stables and our closest friends and family staying with us in each of the properties for the wedding weekend.
Katherine and team created a delicious menu for us and the food and service was impeccable, despite the fact that we had a few more guests for the meal than they are used to! We just want to say thank you once again to everyone at Westcove House for helping us create such a unique and intimate wedding. It's a weekend we will cherish forever!

Idyllic Retreat by the Atlantic Ocean
Westcove House is situated in a fantastic location, surrounded by lush green fields, mountain peaks and vast blue sky. The private harbour lends a wonderful quaintness to the property.
The eccentric house is stylishly decorated, the grounds are beautifully kept and the views of the Atlantic estuary and Kerry mountains and Bearra peninsula to the South are spectacular.
Katherine's cooking is hearty and homely in the very best sense. All of our catering requests were enthusiastically met.
The property is located close to beautiful sandswept beaches, Staigue Fort and other points of local interest.
A wonderful choice for a family reunion, intimate wedding or anniversary setting, or in our case, a yoga retreat.
Wonderful Wedding Week at Westcove
My Husband and I had our wedding celebration at Westcove House in August 2014 and it was perfect. We were able to house our guests on site for the week- the houses were all beautiful and very comfortable. The setting is peaceful and beautiful. We had everything we could need and more at the house. Susanne was excellent to work with when booking and planning our trip- provided many excellent tips and was easy to access for questions. Once we arrive Katherine made us comfortable and was there to help with anything we needed. The house was the perfect location to take day trips and hikes from. We cannot wait to visit again.
The house worked perfectly for a wedding celebration. We did a small ceremony on the front lawn, had dinner in the dining room, local musicians playing, and celebration in the stables. It could not have been more perfect of a location to get married. The food by Katherine and others was superb. We had dancing lessons with Bernie the night prior which allowed us to attempt some Irish dancing during the reception which was a blast. The venue was perfect for a wedding and made all guests feel comfortable and at home. I highly recommend Westcove House for anyone considering for vacation or wedding accommodations.
There is plenty to see and do within 15 minutes drive of Westcove:-
Visit Derrynane House , ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house, surrounded by beautiful sub-tropical gardens is open to the public daily in the summer., and weekends all year round.... the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes! The house overlooks Derrynane bay, with it's spectacular dunes - great for dog walking and horseback riding and one of the loveliest sandy beaches in Ireland, where there is an excellent watersports centre in summer - with many facilities for all ages.
In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a traditional local pub, - or go to The Blind Piper, a younger atmosphere with excellent, home-cooked food and live music on Thursday evenings. In summer, there’s a bustling market in the Community Centre on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts.
The largest and arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, Staigue Fort is about 3 miles above Castlecove, less than 15 minutes drive away. ...well worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking.
Follow the Ring of Kerry clockwise to the West and explore Waterville with its famous sea trout lake and great restaurants. Take the Skellig Ring - one of the most scenic routes along the 'Wild Atlantic Way' - to Port Magee , cross the bridge over to Valencia Island with its many tourist attractions.
A boat trip to Skellig Islands - famous as a location in the 2 latest Star War films, is a must! On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skellig 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.
Kerry is a paradise for walkers. Stroll along the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane or venture up into the hills and follow the well signed 'Kerry Way'.
40 minutes drive east along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare Estuary, is the picturesque town of Kenmare, well-known for its many tempting shops and excellent bars and restaurants. On Wednesdays there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouth-watering selection of cheeses, pates and other home-made delicacies!
Drive south from Kenmare over spectacular mountain passes, to explore the Beara Peninsula which has so much to offer visitors, including the imposing stately home, Bantry House, the Sculpture Park and many beautiful gardens ...
The one hour drive to Killarney is probably the most scenic in Ireland - a winding road with magnificent views over its famous lakes and mountains. The town itself is now overly popular, teeming with tourists, huge hotels and souvenir shops, however it's well worth visiting Muckross House and Gardens and the 15th century Muckross Abbey on the lakes shortly before Killarney.
Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce.
