Guestbook comments from the owner

We chose Viper’s Quay for a May break on the basis of earlier reviews and were delighted. Devon hedgerows full of wild flowers on the way and when we got there location, ambience, comfort and facilities all lived up to earlier comments. We particularly enjoyed all the local prints, pictures and maps on the walls - great and eclectic collection of books too. Pleased too to find such a range of herbs in the kitchen racks when we needed a little Oregano. Every need seems to have been thought of.

Chose VQ also for the 55+ recommendations of previous reviewers as one of our party had limited mobility, and because the house was effectively on one level with a walk-in shower. It worked out fine in every respect and provided much interest and a splendid outlook if she just chose to sit and look. We found that the hills proved no challenge to a good mobility scooter, although the cattle grids, should you make the walk into Dittisham a few times as we did, can prove an interesting challenge.

The standard of the fish meals at the Anchorstone Cafe in Dittisham is astonishingly high: a local lemon sole that overhung the plate and fat plump scallops in their shells.

Excellent bitter at the Ferryboat Inn.

A Peaceful Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Vipers' Quay is a Modernist house, which has been tastefully modernized and practically furnished, with a large family's needs in mind. It perfectly suits twenty first century standards. The house and grounds nestle in a glorious setting on the River Dart, offering panoramic views of the river and gentle hills of the landscape. We see Agatha Christie's lovely house in the distance. Light and space abound in the house. We found it to be impeccably clean, so comfortable and obviously well maintained. Vipers' Quay has a warm spirit of place. One can imagine spending Christmas at the house, with a large Christmas tree standing proudly in the entrance hall. You will find many good books on the shelves to read, by Graham Greene or Zadie Smith or Agatha Christie, notable historians and correspondents. There is much to do in the area: visit fascinating National Trust properties, art galleries and splendid gardens, take long walks, sail, and more. It is marvelous to be able to use ferries to travel rather than one's car. The owner was very helpful and caring, always responsive. She sounds charming. Vipers' Quay is a gem.

Cant recommend it highly enough

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Vipers Quay a number of times now and never cease to be amazed at what a fabulous location it is.

Hidden away in the trees, the wonderful view make you feel like your floating on the river.

With its own private jetty you can catch a river taxi wherever you should need to go, or just stay at the house and enjoy the peace and tranquility.

I know there are plenty of interesting places to visit nearby but we never really want to stray all that far as its such a nice place to be.

Each time we have been the first thing we want to do when we get home is book another visit there.

Spacious Riverside home

  • 5 of 5

Vipers Quay is a spacious, comfortable home perched on a wide bend on the River Dart. Large windows display the river scene, with Agatha Christie's elegant house, Greenway, visible on the opposite shore. Dittisham, the local village, is a short drive or long walk away. There were only four of us, but the house would easily accommodate a larger party--families or groups of friends. The kitchen is large and well-equipped. The dining and lounge areas, surrounded by those windows and an outdoor walkway, are spacious. The bedrooms are comfortable. Everything--heating, dish and clothes washers, hot water, etc.--works perfectly. The house is immaculately clean.

Vipers Quay is particularly suited for those who want to spend much of their time enjoying the house and its immediate surroundings. You can take the ferry to Dartmouth and to Greenway, across the river. Driving anywhere means experiencing what people in Devon seem to regard as roads. I found it part of the fun, particularly with the hedgerows in bloom, but be aware that those hedgerows often allow only one car to squeak by.

Staying here is particularly pleasant because the hostess is so generous and helpful. From the first inquiry through various questions we had until we arrived, she was most responsive to our questions and needs. We also much appreciated the welcoming bottle of Chianti DOCG.

So, with a nod to those pesky roads, I can't imagine that there's a better place to stay in this particular part of the world.

Relaxing holiday with stupendous views .......

  • 5 of 5

A lovely relaxing family holiday in a stunning waterside setting a perfect place to sit and enjoy family meals. I last stayed in the property not long after it was completed in 1964 and although many features have been upgraded eg the new smart kitchen it is lovely that many of the modernist quirky features from the 1960s, such as the lighting are still there. The addition of the covered hallway adds a bright useful area particularly useful for storing wet dogs!

We ate out at Bushells in Dartmouth and had a lovely meal but also had great food at the Red Lion in Dittisham. The appearance inside is quirky but dont let this put you off the food was excellent.

Excellent Property

  • 5 of 5

The house is spacious, comfortable and well equipped but the icing on the cake is the view, just stunning.

Our group took advantage of the local amenities taking the small ferry from Dittisham to Dartmouth (and back) to shop and lunch, such a relaxing way to travel. The following day we visited Agatha Christie's Greenway, lovely house and grounds, popping in to the Ferry Boat Inn, Dittisham on our way back!

The terrain can be quite challenging for walking and the lanes very narrow re driving but well worth the effort. We found a small public car park in Dittisham but you will have to walk down and more importantly back up if you wish to take the ferry. Greenway is the same but the National Trust run a shuttle to and from the house and ferry if you are unable to make the walk.

We were a group of eight ladies who meet annually for a long weekend and we all voted this property in the top three we have visited over the years and will definitely return in the future.

A lovely weekend had by all.

Wow! What a fantastic property....

  • 5 of 5

We had our annual family gathering at Viper's Quay this last early May Bank holiday. It's a converted boathouse right on the River Dart at Dittisham. It's opposite Greenways (Agatha Christie's old house) and has fabulous views down the river. We saw plenty of wildlife including a couple of seals! The location is very rural and very peaceful, being surrounded by farm-land and down a long drive. There are plentiful walks, including a stroll into Dittisham to a great Cafe and adjacent Pub. The house is very well equipped with five bedrooms comfortably sleeping 10 - 12 (the last room is a four berth bunk room - great for children). It's obviously a well loved family retreat and has everything required for a comfortable existence. We absolutely loved it and expect to return many times in future! This really is a 12/10 experience!

Dittisham, an attractive village dating back to Domesday, lies about 3 miles upstream from Dartmouth and is a perfect base from which to explore the beautiful South Hams area.

The village has two pubs, a popular riverside cafe and an exceptionally good village shop.

There is a half-hourly water bus to Dartmouth, from where river cruises go to Totnes. Both these ancient towns have good shopping and excellent restaurants.

The river provides endless opportunities for entertainment, and boats - both sailing and motor - can be hired in the village or in Dartmouth. There is good fishing in the river and several local boats provide sea fishing trips.

The area provides a wide variety of things to do and see - attractions to suit all ages and interests. There are several sandy beaches and golf courses within easy range. Steam railways run from Totnes to Buckfastleigh, where there is an otter centre; and from Kingswear, on the opposite bank to Dartmouth, to Paignton. There is a delightful zoo at Paignton, a charming children's zoo at Totnes, a model village (popular with children) at Babbacombe, and an excellent theme park at Blackawton (5m). There are several glorious gardens and National Trust and other historic properties in the vicinity, - Greenway House, once the home of Agatha Christie, is just across the river, reached by ferry from the village.

For more information see our website www.vipersquay.co uk.

Shopping: There is a Sainsbury's and a Lidl just before Dartmouth and a Morrison's at Totnes.

On-line shopping/delivery is available from Tesco and Sainsbury's. There is an exceptionally good village shop (& post office) in the Red Lion pub where groceries, newspapers and a very wide range of other items can be obtained

Other Activities: Horse riding
