About Mark Volkmann
I'm a retired Professor from the University of Missouri-Columbia. My family has been coming to Colorado for the past 15 years, renting vacation properties for a week at a time during summer and winter. Our love of the outdoors (hiking & skiing) took us to several Rocky Mountain locations, including the Collegiate Peaks that surround Salida, Colorado.
Mark Volkmann purchased this House in 2006
Why Mark Volkmann chose Salida
About 10 years ago, I decided to purchase a gathering place for my adult and growing family. I wanted to create a place to spend summer vacations and winter breaks. I considered several of the locations we had stayed in the past, but finally settled on Salida. I purchased the Little Brown House (LBH) because of its spectacular setting and its proximity to all the things my family loves about the west - skiing, hiking, biking and more.
What makes this House unique
What my family loves about the LBH is its privacy on the one hand and its closeness to Salida and outdoor activities on the other. Below, is a short list of natural attractions within easy reach of the LBH: Ski Monarch is a hidden gem only 20 minutes from the LBH. Enjoy inexpensive lift tickets and short lines. The resort is family-owned and friendly with skiing and snowboarding for every level. Monarch receives 350 inches of snow on average - some of the most in Colorado. For those of you who like to snow shoe or cross country ski, try Old Monarch Pass Trail. The Trailhead is located one mile west of Ski Monarch on US 50. This is an easy-to-moderate 3-mile hike/snow-shoe/ski to a Continental Divide view of the Rocky Mountains. After a day of skiing or hiking, a trip to the Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort (25 minutes north of the LBH) or a soak in the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center pool (10 minutes east of the LBH) is in order. A short drive from the base of Mount Princeton is the ghost town settlement of St. Elmo, a historic mining town. St. Elmo offers tranquil viewpoints to take in autumn colors. A visit to the country store is a must! Seven miles north on County Road 250 is access to the Colorado Trail. It stretches across the entire state. Hike or bike the Colorado Trail east to Brown’s Cabin or west to Angel of Shavano Camp Grounds. If you are up for something more strenuous, you can hike to the summit of Mt. Shavano (14,229 feet). Plan to reach the top before noon and bring plenty of water. Browns Canyon National Monument and the Arkansas River offer whitewater rafting, kayaking, fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, camping, hunting, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. From the Arkansas River to the Continental Divide, the elevation rises 4,000 feet through forests and canyons to unparalleled views of the Sawatch Mountains and the Collegiate Peaks (Chaffee County boasts 15 of the 53 tallest mountains in Colorado).

Great location, super quiet.
Like the title says, the location can't be beat. Looking out my bedroom window every morning at a 14er is awesome. It was well stocked, comfortable, clean and simple. I'd come back for sure. Thanks!
Great place to stay in the Salida area!
Would recommend to anyone.
Great Stay at LBH
We thought the LBH was one of our best VRBO experiences in Salida. The location is great with beautiful views and the house is really comfortable. We loved the fact that we could go out on the deck at night and have great views of the stars. Mark was really good to work with as well. We will look forward to coming back to stay at the LBH during a future visit to Salida.
Great views from the back patio
We enjoyed our stay and found the place adequate for our family's vacation needs. Great location, isolated and quiet.
We had 6 adults staying for 5 days and this place was perfect for us. We enjoyed the views everyday. Both the front of the house and the back have wonderful mountain views. The house was very clean and the kitchen was well appointed. The owner was very easy to get in touch with and we did not have any issues. It was even warm a few days but the breezes were great through the windows and doors. There is a portable A/C unit that we used a couple times. Thanks for a great place to celebrate a 60th birthday.
Great spot! Comfortable home!
We enjoyed our stay with another small family. It rained almost the entire time, so we were glad to have such an accommodating space, equipped with toys for our children!
The Little Brown House (LBH), located 6 miles west of Salida, 7 miles from the Mt. Shavano Trailhead, and 12 miles from Monarch Pass and the Monarch Crest Trailhead (great hiking/biking on the Continental Divide). Salida is a community of 5,500 people. We are surrounded by the greatest concentration of 14 thousand foot peaks in Colorado (15 of 54). The town is a haven for hikers, bikers, campers, and skiers. The Arkansas River winds its way along the edge of downtown, inviting rafters, kayakers, fishers, and “beach lovers” alike. Known for a mild climate, Salida is a perfect setting for your outdoor adventure. The Monarch Ski Resort offers downhill skiing & snowboarding, and the surrounding ski area offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
