About Mark Volkmann

I'm a retired Professor from the University of Missouri-Columbia. My family has been coming to Colorado for the past 15 years, renting vacation properties for a week at a time during summer and winter. Our love of the outdoors (hiking & skiing) took us to several Rocky Mountain locations, including the Collegiate Peaks that surround Salida, Colorado.

Mark Volkmann purchased this house in 2006

Why Mark Volkmann chose South Central Colorado

About 10 years ago, I decided to purchase a gathering place for my adult and growing family. I wanted to create a place to spend summer vacations and winter breaks. I considered several of the locations we had stayed in the past, but finally settled on Salida. I purchased the Little Brown House (LBH) because of its spectacular setting and its proximity to all the things my family loves about the west - skiing, hiking, biking and more.

What makes this house unique

What my family loves about the LBH is its privacy on the one hand and its closeness to Salida, hiking, biking, and skiing on the other.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wanted to let you know that our entire party really enjoyed the LBH. It was our favorite stop on our CO trip. Because we have younger kids, we visited the Agnes Vaille Falls, per your recommendation in your Notebook, it was perfect for our group. The last night we were there, a herd of elk came down out of the tree lines north of your place. We counted over 50 of them. Just as it was getting dark, they made their way through the lot just north of yours. They were so close we could hear them snorting and eating, amazing.

Great Weekend away from the city

  • 5 of 5

Me and a close group of friends stayed at the Little Brown House for the weekend of 8/12-8/14. The house was exactly as described and fit our group of 6 no problem. We enjoyed being able to watch the Olympics on the tv and the internet work more than sufficient for our needs. Its also worth noting that we had 4G service on our phones while there so that was nice as well.

We cooked several meals there, all the necessary tool, oils, spices ect that we needed were provided. The dishwasher works great which made clean up a breeze. The grill was also nice to have, we brought charcoal and there was plenty of lighter fluid provided to get it started.

Our favorite part was learning how to and becoming experts are using the telescope to look at the AMAZING views of the Milky Way. We saw no less than 25 meteors over mt shavano while hanging out at night, as well a great views of Mars and the moon, the international space station even by chance made a pass over us while were looking up, needless to say the view at night was great. Our other favorite part was watching the sun set over the collegiate range, so beautiful and with the expansive views watched a thunder storm pass over 1 peak while having seller red, orange, blue sunset over another.

Thanks for such a great weekend away form the noise crowded front range we all needed.

Owner's Response: The 4" reflecting telescope requires perseverance - I've tuned in the 4 moons of Jupiter and Saturn's rings. Sunset from the deck is quite a treat. I'm glad you found the kitchen to be well-stocked.

Amazing views, peaceful, clean

  • 5 of 5

The LBH is a wonderful property. When we arrived we found it to be very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was amazingly well-stocked with basics and in his welcome folder Mark made it obvious that he wanted to share his property and possessions with his guests - from providing various hot tea bags, many items in his pantry, his guitar and bicycle... Thank You Mark! The town of Salida is only 10 minutes away and there you can find anything you would need at Walmart and many restaurants. Our favorite part was sitting on the deck in the peace and quiet and looking at an absolutely amazing view!! The views were actually 360 degrees - anyway you turned you had a beautiful view. Having a son with us that enjoys astronomy, we were given the gift of a clear sky and we were able to see the Milky Way for the first time and many shooting stars! The beds and furniture were comfortable. You will not be disappointed in the LBH!

Little Brown House in Salida, CO

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our family of 2 seniors, 2 adult children and 2 grandchildren while we slid down the Mt Princeton water slide, toured St Elmo and fed the chipmunks and watched the rafters ride the rapids in downtown Salida. The layout was perfect for kids to watch tv while the adults watched the wildlife and scenery from the deck and living area. Everything we needed was there. My GPS on Safari on my IPhone took us there exactly. It was a great place to stay!

Great house, great location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great weekend getaway to celebrate my father's birthday and the 4th of July. Mark was responsive and very helpful -- his instructions are clear and easy to follow. The house is well equipped, clean, and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay and will likely come back in the future when we are in the area.

Strongly recommend this property -- it is a great value! There are a lot of things to do in the area, regardless of the season.

Clean and Comfortable!

  • 4 of 5

We were in Salida for a long week and to attend the beer festival. The LBH was clean and Comfortable and very well stocked. However, i was disappointed that there was not an iron and ironing board provided. Also, the interior of the house was well kept but exterior could use some help with weeds and grass, very unkept.

Overall , it was a great place to stay.
