This Villas Catalinas Townhome #15, part of a gated community with security guards, is located near Playa Flamingo and within walking distance to the secluded Playa Prieta, Playa Penca, Sugar Beach, and Playa Potrero beaches, as well as several restaurants, bars, and local grocery stores. It is a short drive to Playa Danta and Playa Dantita, and Playa Tamarindo is 25 minutes away. There is an infinity-edge swimming pool with spectacular ocean views of Playa Flamingo and the surrounding area, a Jacuzzi, and a covered entertainment area with BBQ and bathrooms. It is perfect for an evening BBQ but even better for those incredible sunsets over the ocean and sweeping views of Flamingo!
This lovely, comfortable, new 3 bedroom/3 bath (sleeps 6 maximum) townhome is fully furnished with all the amenities of home, including a washer/dryer. Families are welcome. There is a spacious living room / dining room / kitchen and bar area with granite counter tops, two balconies, and amazing ocean views. Sit out on the balcony to hear the waves breaking, and listen to the symphony of sounds of howler monkeys, roosters, and the incredibly beautiful birds.
The Flamingo/Potrero area is one of the most gorgeous beach communities in Costa Rica, with many different and beautiful beaches to choose from to relax and soak up the tropical sun. It is also well known for world-class sport fishing, diving, snorkeling, surfing, zipline/canopy tours, sailboat sunset tours, horseback riding, ATV tours, volcanoes, waterfalls, eco-tours, kayaking, and other activities, including golf and tennis nearby, biking, and bird watching. Stay here and relax for your entire vacation, or use this as a home base and take day trips to nearby attractions such as Arenal volcano, Rincon de la Vieja, or Santa Rosa national park.
Beaches: Flamingo Beach, well known for its white sand, shade trees, and low surf, is one of the most famous beaches of the area and a popular beach among locals and tourists alike. Conchal Beach is just a short drive away and also known as 'shell' beach. This is a long soft white sand beach and most popular with tourists. Potrero Beach is where all the fishing and sailing boats are anchored and is a protected bay area — perfect for children to play. Playa Penca is usually not crowded and off the main road just like Playa Prieta. Prieta and Penca are a short 5-minute walk across the road from the townhomes. Slightly north is the famous Sugar Beach hotel and restaurant located right on the beach. You can have lunch there and use their pool as well as their wonderful beach area. And a few minutes north of that is Las Catalinas, a new development with a full activities center that has paddle boarding, surfing and instruction, bike rentals and tours, and great hiking/running trails. Then relax afterwards and have lunch at Lola’s Norte while taking in the ocean views of the incredible Playa Danta.
Restaurants: The area has many restaurants with different types of cuisine ranging from typical local food to international cuisine. All restaurants have fresh seafood and fish. You can walk to some local restaurants — Sol y Mar and Las Brisas beach bar, or drive 10 minutes to Flamingo and enjoy Marie's restaurant or Mar y Sol sunset lounge/tapas bar, an award-winning gourmet restaurant, or drive to Playa Danta to the new Lola’s Norte for lunch. Brasilito, which is just 15 minutes away, has the Happy Snapper with live entertainment on weekends and also the Golden Shrimp on the beach. Other restaurants in the area include Palaccio del Sol, Amberes, Mariner Inn, Marco Polo, Maxwell's, El Castillo, Outback Jacks, Il Forno, and Bahia del Sol.
This villa is very nice in many ways. The view is spectacular from the villa balcony and exceptional from the pool. It is a 2 storeys villa, one bedroom on main floor. Pictures on the web are exactly the way it is, no surprises. Located in a quiet area. Beds are very comfortable. Plenty of dishes, pots and pans. Something that one has to know is that there is a steep hill (pavement 100ft) and 57 steps from the villa to get to the pool which was not an issue for us 6. It is not wheel chair accessible. You can see all kinds of wildlife especially birds. If you walk to the nearby beach you will also have a chance to see monkeys on the way. A car is highly recommended if you want to get a better variety of groceries. Would recommend to anybody
We had a great stay at Villa Catalina - the condo was very spacious with an open area concept for the kitchen, living room and dining room area - it lived up to its description on VRBO. The kitchen was appreciatively well equipped and overall the condo was very well maintained. It was in close proximity to a few beaches that were only a few minutes walk. We appreciated that the condo was in a gated community and the staff (and condo neighbours) were very friendly and helpful - the local Costa Ricans were also all very friendly. The infiniti pool was only a minute's walk from the condo and was fabulous - great view of the ocean! There is a paved road to the condo which was nice as dust was minimal. The condo was only a couple minutes away from the community of Potrero. We appreciated that the condo wasn't located in a touristy area, although tourist resorts were nearby. We rented a vehicle, but you could do without and rely upon local transportation to get around. We found the owners to be very helpful in responding to our inquiries about the condo and community, and offering suggestions on recreational activities, restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing. The property management team was also excellent. And of course, the weather was nearly always perfect!
We had a lovely week at Villas Catalina. The townhouse was immaculate, and the midweek cleaning kept it that way. The view from the living room was beautiful and relaxing. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, so the six of us ( four adults and two 12 year olds) were very comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped, and the pool was great for midnight swims. We visited the nearby beaches several times and they were great for body surfing and poking around the tide pools.
We took a terrific tour arranged by Special Places of Guanacaste. Alex Moreno took us river rafting and zip lining at Rincon de la Vieja. The rafting was very fun and exhilarating, and the zip lining was beautiful--back and forth across the river. We then drove two hours to a river boat ride and saw all kinds of birds and monkeys and crocodiles. Alex gave us all kinds of interesting local info--definitely recommend doing a tour in the early part of the trip.
We wanted to hike to the 100 ft waterfall at Rincon de la Vieja but got there too late. It's a 5 hr hike and the park closes at 4:30 so the ranger wouldn't let us go. You'd need to leave the townhouse by 9 am at the absolute latest to do the hike. We did a shorter hike and saw the mud pots etc, and ended with a refreshing swim in a natural pool fed and emptied by two waterfalls.
Also enjoyed Tamarindo--it had a beautiful wide a shallow beach. The town had lots of surf shops and knickknack stores for the kids to buy presents for their friends. Had a nice lunch by the water.
We were a bit surprised by the bumpy dirt road that led to the townhouse, and the many empty concrete shells of buildings that had apparently been started then abandoned. And at times we felt like the last tourists on earth! We were actually happy to find our "tourist friends" at places like Tamarindo and Sugar beach.
All in all a fun and relaxing vacation.
This is such a great place to come with friends or family to relax by the beach just outside of town away from the hustle and bustle. Walking distance to local groceries, restaurants, beaches, and bars, even though the place itself is very quiet. The infinity pool tops it off with great sunset views while you lounge in the chairs or swim in the pool.
A few of my girlfriends and I spent a week at Villas Catalina Townhome #15. We could not be more pleased with the beauty and quality of Villas Catalina! The views are amazing (especially while watching the sunsets at the infinity pool), and the Villa is very well maintained and incredibly spacious. Kate & Tedd are excellent hosts and very anxious to make sure all of their guests are taken care of — they even left a list of all the best restaurants, spas, and activities that they had personally tested out themselves, and we enjoyed them all! We were especially fond of the gorgeous beach that was rarely occupied and was within walking distance from the house. It felt very much like our own private beach. If you are looking for more excitement, there is a nearby town called Tamarindo that you can drive to, but we were perfectly happy lounging by the pool and beaches and eating/drinking at the cute little restaurants in the area. My husband and I plan on returning soon and staying even longer.
