Joe & Mimi
We are Joe & Mimi, the owners who live in the main house upstairs in this beautiful Victorian. We purchased this house in 2012, did some major renovation and decided to rent out the units below as vacation rentals. We would love to share our home with you and even give you some insights as to what to do, where to go and be of help if you are unsure of how to get around in the Bay Area, during your stay with us.
Joe Pappaly / Mimi purchased this apartment in 2012
We bought this property because we always wanted to live in a victorian and we simply love Alameda. The people, the weather, the proximity to everything and most of all the tranquility of this island.
We chose this particular property because of its unique Victorian look & feel of it. This home was built in 1891 by Peter Christiansen who was a very well known builder during his time. History books claim that he had built several Victorian homes in Alameda. This particular home that he had built was for himself. Historians claim that because of that, he used the best types of wood and construction materials available during his era to build this home. It sure seemed like that during our major remodel.
We LOVED this cute & cozy guest apartment. Highly recommend to anyone!
We were parents w/ 12 y.o daughter & 15 y.o son. The kids slept in the living area on the pull-out couch and we got the awesomely super comfy, memory foam, the best bed we've ever slept on.
The decor in the unit was so pretty and perfect. The backyard garden patio was nice and relaxing to sit at. We didn't have time to BBQ on this action packed city trip and ate dinner out in Alameda. There's parking in Alameda in front of the restaurants or you can walk; it was 5 blocks to the Main Street where all the action is. Yet the apartment was in a quiet neighborhood. No street noise. Beautiful historic homes.
We drove to the ferry terminal in Alameda in the morning and took the ferry to Fisherman's Wharf. What a beautiful way to travel. The views of the city were breathtaking!
Thanks Joe & Mimi. We truly enjoyed our stay and will return when we decide to come up to the Bay Area again.
We are a family of 4 with two teenagers that were on a two week northern California vacation. It isn't easy finding a hotel or VRBO in San Francisco for under $250/night (at least in August 2016 when we traveled). This apartment worked great for us. First logistics ---We had a car, parking is on the street, free and safe right outside the apartment. To get into San Francisco it's about a 5-10 minute drive to the Alameda Ferry where there was lots of FREE parking for the entire day. The ferry is a beautiful ride (20-30 min)into the SF Ferry building or you can continue on to Pier 39. From there you can catch a Muni to anywhere in SF. Round trip was about $35 for all of us. Buy tickets on board. No traffic to deal with, no driving in SF looking for parking - easy, relaxing, ride that makes you feel like you are living there. If you are planning to stay late in SF this is not a good option - the last ferry leaves at 9:30 pm weekdays and 10:30pm weekends https://sanfranciscobayferry.com/route/sffb/alameda
The apartment - wonderful! This is our 10th VRBO rental and I'm just amazed that any family stays in a hotel anymore. The size is fine for what we needed. We were there for sleeping and a couple late night dinners where we got home and were so happy to have quiet and a kitchen to make some spaghetti. The kids used the pull out sofa which was comfortable for them. Beautifully decorated and many, many thoughtful extras to make you stay more enjoyable- like spices, some coffee, and a well stocked kitchen of appliances and cookware.
The Oakland Airport is right nearby. I booked flights before finding places to stay so we had a 6am flight out of SF airport and had about a 30-45 minute drive there at 4am. So if you stay here and are flying in, try booking through Oakland Airport, its very close by (but we never heard planes...just some dogs barking early in the morning)
We enjoyed our stay very much and hope you have a chance to stay here too.
This is a perfect place to stay!!! The description of the property was spot on, Joe and Mimi have done an amazing job making their property very cozy. Joe greeted us as soon as we arrived and offered recommendations for local restaurants. We really enjoyed Speisekammer , Ole’s Waffle Shop and of course Tucker’s Super Creamed Ice Cream. We highly recommend this property to anyone traveling to the San Francisco area.
We stayed with Joe and Mimi to explore the S.F. area. The apt. is very well equipped, the place is quite and peacefull. Lots of restaurants and small shops are in walking distance, you need a couple of minutes by car to find a large supermaket.
The owners are very friendly and helpfully. Simply, it was very nice to stay there.
Fabulous and friendly hosts. The wine and chocolates were such a nice touch. Fantastic location with easy access to both Oakland and San Francisco. The most comfortable bed ever! We would return again and again.
We were greeted as soon as we arrived and given all the information we would need.
The house had everything we needed (incl a window A/C unit), nice private outdoor patio with grill and heater for later nights.
The location / town is beautiful! All the stores you would need are nearby.
We took a ferry to San Fran which took an hour of the day and $38 for the family. We drove the next day and located a garage by Pier 31 for $25 for the day! Parking at the pier was $45 for anything 3.5 hours +.
Lastly , do a DOUBLE D hop on / hop off bus tour right away. You can do the pier later. This way you know what you want to do and where you want to go after you see all there is to offer.
Back to the house.....it is great as well and I would definitely recommend it.
