About David Schroedl

La Jolla resident for 43 years. Retired La Jolla residential real estate broker. Legend status with Prudential California Real Estate. Former real estate developer. Three degrees from MIT.

David Schroedl purchased this house in 2004

Why David Schroedl chose San Diego

One of the very few redwood and glass mid-century modern homes in La Jolla. Rich redwood texture. Updated with high quality touches. Extremely high quality furniture. Super-high speed internet. Enjoy the romance of soft lighting with Lutron dimming on almost all the lighting.

Vistas or ocean views from all rooms!

Enjoy all the advantages of Apple TV including ability to view NETFLIX and all your photos and video on the 65' TV screen. Relax on the Rouche-Bobois couch and lounge chair or on the zero gravity Human Touch 'Perfect Chair' featuring tempurpedic foam. A second large screen TV is located outdoors for your enjoyment while sitting in the large outdoor patio off the great room.

For computer use, six foot glass topped 'desk' in FR with two Knoll office chairs. For dining, tables and chairs for ten (twelve when using the office chairs).

What makes this house unique

Enjoy being indoors with the feeling of being one with nature. Glass just disappears into the ceilings and many of the walls. YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE OUTDOORS WHILE INSIDE THE HOME. Eight huge skylights bath the home with light while the cedar roof overhang providing natural sun control. Two of the skylights in the bathroom area are ventilating.

And speaking of ventilation, with operative sliding glass windows next to the ceiling in all rooms, catch the ocean breezes and enjoy SUPER cross ventilation. That ventilation eliminates all the hot air that typically rises to the ceiling and creates higher interior than exterior temperatures. No need for mechanical airconditioning nor is any featured. ENJOY LA JOLLA'S FANTASTIC WEATHER WHILE INSIDE YOUR HOME!

Although there is little need for it, enjoy radiant hot water heat in the floors on those cooler winter nights.

Wonderful huge patios and much lush vegetation. Extreme privacy.

Note: Door clearances are 6'2' to 6'3'.

Great place for a guys weekend.

  • 5 of 5

We had a guys get away weekend, and this house was perfect. It was set up perfect for us to watch lots of football. The house is well set up with everything you need. The house was very clean and looked great. I'd definitely use it again.

My only complaint is that it is located next to a very busy street. Getting to the beach takes a little work, and it may not be ideal for someone with small children.

Perfect for our family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the house recently with our children and grandchildren. There was ample room for everyone to spread out and the home was perfectly prepared! The outdoor spaces were taken advantage of by all, especially the upper deck that had a view of the ocean. David was easy to talk to and made sure we had everything available to make it like staying at home. Was very easy to get around and all the conveniences you can think of are close by. Would definitely stay again, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit!

Great family gathering spot

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Wood House. it was perfect for our two families--two couples, two college students, a fifteen year-old and 9 year-old twins. The house was comfortable and well appointed. We loved the clean, mid-century modern design and the abundance of easily integrated indoor/outdoor spaces. The layout offers privacy and nice communal space. We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay--all as advertised--and David responded immediately when we had a couple of very minor issues. He was a very pleasant host and delightful to deal with.

A key advantage of this home is its proximity to La Jolla Village, which has everything you could want or need, and a public beach. Both are walking distance, and we found it a joy to be somewhere in southern California that did not require us to drive everywhere. The only downside of this walkable location was that we were on Torrey Pines Road. As other posters have mentioned, it's a very busy street. The house is well shielded from the road by mature plantings, and it is nicely set back, particularly by La Jolla standards. The sidewalk is on the opposite side, but the road is not that difficult to cross on foot. Even when the traffic is heavy (and there are plenty of times when it is not), it comes in predictable waves that provide regular breaks for crossing. There is traffic noise most of the day, but we got used to it quickly. It is mainly auto traffic, so it becomes white noise after a while. We thought it was a minor inconvenience that was outweighed by the location, the unique character of the home, and the setting.

It is difficult to find a large, attractive vacation rental that is not outrageously priced in a popular destination like La Jolla. This house is also on a very spacious, well-landscaped lot (significantly larger than any of the others in the immediate vicinity) that offers a great sense of privacy despite being on a busy road. Most of the property is behind the house and it slopes upward. At the top, there is an expansive deck with outstanding views of the ocean and the sunsets. Perfect for evening cocktails! Thanks for a lovely stay, Dave!

Stunning historic home: perfect with one exception

  • 4 of 5

Our family gathered from Virginia, Arizona, and Sacramento for a reunion and loved The Wood House. Its beautiful design with high windows at the ceiling that opened and multiple doors to the two patios and walkways around the house allowed ocean breezes to cool the house comfortably. Its living and dining area and kitchen at the center of the home had all the amenities we required plus more. Four bedrooms shared two baths on one side of the house and one bedroom with bath was located at the other end , which fit our family of ten perfectly. This was our first trip to La Jolla and we enjoyed our stay tremendously. However, while the owner made us aware of the location of Torrey Pine Road, we never expected its volume of traffic and noise. The house was a haven, but getting in and out of the driveway was always a wait because of traffic. And while walking across the street was certainly possible, we had to wait for up to five minutes at times to have the left lanes clear enough to cross the street half way. After that the right lanes of traffic always stopped for us to continue, but walking along the sidewalk to the Village was not pleasant with all the traffic rushing by so close. For this reason alone we regret we won't be returning. If only The Wood House could be picked up and moved closer to the ocean. Alas.

We had such a great experience. David was definitely the "Host with the Most"! He was so informative and available for anything and everything that we needed. He even brought us more flowers & orchids to make the home even homier then it was. It was the perfect layout for 3 families with kids of all ages. We thoroughly enjoyed the outside with the large flat screen tv as well as the upper deck to watch the fireworks. The location was great as we could walk to everything and where we were at first nervous about being on such a busy street as Torrey Pines, it was easy to walk across so we could walk to the beach and the wonderful town of La Jolla Shores. We absolutely loved it and would stay there again. Thanks David for helping to make our stay so wonderful.

Graduation Party to Remember

  • 5 of 5

This past weekend was my college graduation and I spent a few months looking for the perfect place to host my graduation party. I had narrowed the search down to Pacific Beach or La Jolla but immediately stopped looking after finding this place. David was incredibly nice and accommodating, even allowing us to stay an extra night upon short notice. He thoroughly walked us through the house and explained many features that may have stumped guests, like how to turn on the TV and operate appliances. The house itself is unique, completely made of wood and provides a very indoor/outdoor feeling with all of the windows. I was searching for a place with a great backyard or patio space because I wanted to celebrate out in the beautiful San Diego sun. The backyard yard had ample seating, heating lamps, barbecue, and even a flat screen TV! On top of this beautiful space there was a viewing balcony situated above the property which gave some of the bests views in all of La Jolla. The location of the house is perfect, incredibly close to restaurants, shops, grocery stores, but also is well equipped to host a party in or prepare a meal to dine in. The kitchen was spacious and modern with enough cutlery, plates, and serving dishes to feed an army in a very stylish way! Overall I was very satisfied with the location of the house and the amenities it provided. I will always think back to my graduation party and remember the breathtaking sunset from the viewing deck, the comfy beds, and the perfect outdoor space.
