This peaceful and quiet hidden gem of a studio is perfectly situated in the heart of the city. We're located in the bustling Castro district only a five minute walk to Market and Castro -- a convenient and fast transportation hub with Muni underground, trains and buses. Downtown is only 10-15 minutes away. It's possible to travel directly from SFO by Bart with only one transfer at Civic Center to the Castro Street Muni Station. You won't need a car to get around -- most of our guests enjoy the city without one -- but if you do drive, parking is easy and free on our block.
The Castro is a friendly neighborhood with well cared for classic Victorian and Edwardian buildings, parks, cafes, restaurants, small groceries, shops and the venerable Castro theater. Although it is a flat walk to transportation and Castro street shopping, we have lots of hills nearby with hidden staircases and wonderful views. Start your day with a walk to Tartine Bakery on Valencia for croissants & coffee or up to Twin Peaks for the views. We are perfectly situated next to some of the city's hottest restaurants -- walking distance from the Mission, the Valencia Corridor, Duboce Triangle, Hayes Valley, Lower Haight & Noe Valley
This studio apartment was newly built in 2012 at the garden level of a renovated 1907 Edwardian. Accessed through a side door and corridor to the back, it's great for folks who prefer not to climb a lot of steps. It's a spacious 440 square feet with 9' ceilings, hardwood floors, recess lighting and Anderson sliding doors to a patio and shared garden.
We've set up the apartment for the way we'd like to live if we, family or friends were to stay there for weeks at a time. The sitting area has a comfortable couch and chair, a 32' LCD TV w/cable and DVD, the fabulously comfortable king size bed has lots of great pillows and high thread count cotton sheets. There are bathrobes in the closet and the tiled bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer, bath products and lots of room for your things. Upon request, there is a single mattress for a third person and for our smallest visitors a travel crib or child's cot.
The kitchenette with refrigerator, convection microwave, induction burner, toaster oven, coffee maker, tea kettle, rice cooker and crock-pot, etc. has everything you'll need to eat in when you're not in the mood to take advantage of numerous restaurants nearby. There is a supermarket three blocks away and farmers' markets all over town.
Your hosts, Jan and Wandralee, are happy to direct you to neighborhood cafes & restaurants, interesting places to walk or bike, and all of the wonderful amenities San Francisco has to offer.
I've lived in San Francisco for almost 50 years and can't imagine ever moving. I still appreciate the parks, museums, cultural activities, great food and being able to walk everywhere. I'm a bicyclist, avid reader, traveler, mother of two grown daughters, grandmother, scuba diver, ceramist, Realtor and work for social change.
My partner and I love spending time with friends, enjoying a walk across town, and hosting travelers from around the world.
Jan Medina purchased this studio in 1992
I moved from the Mission district to this wonderful 2 unit Edwardian about twenty years ago because it's both quiet and only a few blocks to the center of everything. I love that I can walk to Muni-Metro (which connects to BART) in five minutes and get anywhere easily and quickly -- it's one of the easiest places to catch a bus, train or taxi in SF.
Although street parking is fairly easy, in 2011 we raised our building to put in a three car garage. At that time we built out a new large studio at the garden level.
I often walk to Tartine on Valencia for croissants & coffee or up to Twin Peaks for the views.
This studio apartment was very well-equipped and looked directly out on a beautiful garden. It included a small kitchen with fridge, microwave, coffee maker (delicious coffee was provided) and a toaster oven (but no cooker). The furniture was comfortable and the bed was a king-plus size with a very good mattress. The location was 5 or so blocks up the hill from Castro Street, which is loaded with restaurants and cafes and some handy grocery stores. My daughter and I shared the apartment, and while she had no problem hiking the hill to its location, it was little hard on me, so I simply hopped on bus 33 at the corner of Castro and 18th St. and got off right near the apartment. (I highly recommend purchasing a "Clipper Pass" at the Muni station. We had one for unlimited rides on the bus, tram, cable car, and light rail good for 7 days. Note- the pass does not include BART.) I would definitely recommend this apartment for visitors to the San Francisco area..
My partner and I stayed at Jan and Wandralee's beautiful garden studio for 11 days during the Frameline film festival. It was immaculately kept, well-appointed and very quiet. Photos / lists of amenities were very accurate. Bed was extremely comfortable! We also thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous garden back of the studio. It was a short 7 minute walk into the Castro - even less to Mollie Stone's for groceries. Lots of nearby restaurants, etc. Recommended without reservation for anyone looking for a well-kept, quiet place near to the Castro.
We rented this apartment for a 9-day stay in San Francisco - we absolutely loved it!
We arrived on a Friday afternoon. The Muni stop is within easy walking distance to the property, and the 33 Muni bus runs up the (very steep) hill to the apartment. We didn't know about the 33 bus when we arrived, and dragged all our luggage up the steep hill, so I would definitely recommend the bus!
The apartment was clean and well stocked. There were enough dishes, linens, pillows, and other items that we needed (appliances, iron, etc.). These were easy to locate and we had everything we needed for the week. The garden off the back was just lovely - as beautiful as it was in the pictures! A great place for coffee and breakfast.
Jan was quickly responsive to any questions we had, and we had absolutely no issues getting in and out. The Castro neighborhood was vibrant and fun, and though it's slightly removed from most of the San Francisco attractions/shopping, the Muni metro line runs right from the neighborhood to anywhere you might want to go. I would highly recommend this apartment, and we will certainly stay here again if we come back to the city!
For our first visit to San Francisco this apartment was an ideal place. It was well appointed and felt homely. The outside space was perfect for relaxing in after a busy day in the city. The area of Castro is full of good places to eat and drink and its links to the metro make it easy to travel to and from. I would highly recommend this property
Really functional and beautiful studio with a marvellous garden. The location is good, easy to take street car or metro to downtown. Less than 10 minutes to a really good Mollie's grocery store. Great sushi restaurant, small good cafe's. The owner, Jan Medina was really helpful and kind when needed. We really recommend this Sun-Filled Garden.
Our hosts were very accommodating and gracious. When we had a small need, it was met immediately.
We enjoyed the quiet room and were pleasantly surprised by the garden.
Close to several of SF's hippest neighborhoods including the Castro, Duboce Triangle, Lower Haight, Hayes Valley, Mission Dolores and the Mission, the Fillmore, Civic Center with Opera, Ballet, Symphony etc.. Use one of our bikes to ride to Golden Gate Park or around the city.
