Overview

Shenandoah Valley Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 4 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 4 Baths (Sleeps 8-10)

The best log cabin in Jewell Hollow, Luray Virginia and yes it is ADA compliant! Located near the peak of the Shenandoah Mountains/Skyline Drive, “A Buck’s Peak” is a quiet hide-away that accommodates peace and tranquility to help you and your family relax and “re-charge” the batteries. Four master bedrooms – 3 king beds and 1 queen, “A Buck’s Peak” sleeps 10 (with built in bunk beds) and brags the best views on the mountain. One jet-soaking tub in the upstairs master bedroom and the queen bedroom has an ADA compliant bathroom and shower. Both basement bedrooms have full baths! Hot tub (8-person, 120 jets), 55-inch Sony television with DIRECTV, stainless steel appliances, DVD with DVD library, screened-in porch, jet bathtubs upstairs, and a game room complete with a shuffleboard table, dart board and a Sony Play Station 1 (with games) are just some of the amenities that will ensure you and your family enjoy your stay. We have a super large fire-pit and wood is provided. Additionally, we have two grills; one charcoal and one propane gas (propane is provided; charcoal is not). Kitchen has granite counter-tops and stainless steel appliances and is fully stocked with all the pots, pans and plates to cook your meal and enjoy it! Sure, you can do your laundry at the cabin - full washer and dryer units are located next to the game rooms. Wi-fi/internet is NOT available; some guests use a cellular device with personally-owned hotspot - dependent on your cellular carrier. Verizon seems to be best. Pets are certainly welcome and we have a fenced in pet run for exercise. Please do not leave your pet in the pen if you leave the area; pets are confined to that space and other wildlife are interested. Additionally, if you leave your pet alone in the cabin, you must put the pet in a crate; crates are not provided i.e. you must bring your own. Pet fee is $40 for one pet, $80 for two pets or more. Gravel road takes you up the mountain to this quiet hide-away. Four-wheel-drive highly recommended between October and April; front wheel drive the rest of the year is recommended. Wounded Warriors should ask about a special discount. Discounts are offered to either military (retired, active, Reservists) or teachers – ask for your discount up front to figure pricing; please do not expect more than one discount - either military or educator (both are equal). Also, please do not request discount after first communication - tell me up front you are military or an educator; thanks. Have a wonderful stay and please leave feedback at VRBO Listing #438245 to help us make “A Buck’s Peak” the best Luray cabin. Book today.

Why Carl S. Ey chose Shenandoah Valley

A Buck's Peak resides in the Cabin Capital of Virginia. It is a brand new log cabin in the middle of nowhere but close enough to enjoy the fun stuff like Luray Caverns, Arrowhead Lake (3 miles away), canoeing and rafting on the Shenandoah River, zip-lining, wine-tasting, hiking (yes, you can hike right outside the cabin up to Skyline Drive), antiquing, all types of biking, great restaurants and nature enjoyment. This cabin will take your breath away with all of the accommodations from a super hot tub to a fully equipped kitchen to a large screen t.v. and incredible game room.

What makes this cabin unique

This is one of a VERY few ADA compliant log cabins in the Virginia's Cabin Capital, Luray, Virginia! Additionally, you can tell people you stayed in 'the holler!' A Buck's Peak is located in what Luray citizens refer to as Jewell Hollow or 'the holler.' We offer either a military discount or an educator discount (not both). Please tell me up front that you are an educator or an active/retired/reservist/former military member. This cabin is quiet and private - all of your distractions are removed; no internet option, cell service is practically non-existent as you are enjoying the middle of nature!

A nice weekend in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We went here on the occasion of my wife's birthday along with two other families. Carl was prompt in his replies and organization; directions were detailed and clear; the property was in great condition, essentially just as advertised; the hot tub large, hot and immaculate; and the view expansive. The Geminids meteor shower happened to be occurring while we were there and the deck a great spot to watch them arc across the sky. Hiking up to Mary's Rock from near the park entrance was also a highlight. We hope to return at some future date.

Milo and the Mountains

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great stay at Buck's Peak. We quickly acclimated to the beautiful view, deck and layout of Buck's Peak. We made ourselves right at home immediately, including Milo our dog, she loved it!

Members of our family were able to come and go in intervals over the 10-day stay, and we enjoyed days of hiking, fishing, kayaking, eating, drinking and playing games in the evening...oh, and especially sitting around the campfire too. We encountered two bears, one on Rose River Trail and the other on Hogback.

There is so much to do in the area, we enjoy Luray and the convenient foodies, especially 55East Main Brew House and Grill, the Mimslyn, Dan's Steak House and Thorton River Grille (EXCELLENT food). but also made a trip to Gadino Cellars (excellent) and Wild Wolf Brewery, tasted 11 beers and enjoyed lunch. We are ready to book this home again!

Milo and her Maryland and Virginia family!

Great vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

We rented Buck's Peak for an off beat bachelorette party for the weekend and had an absolute blast! The house was amazing and is kept exceptionally well. For the most part, we just hung out at the cabin and cooked in :) .... several ladies went Zip Lining at Bear Mountain which was a blast! While other ladies went for a hike around the property. We had great weather and it only sprinkled a little. Didn't stop the hot tubbing! We had a fire in their awesome fire pit one night (we brought our own wood).

Regarding the driveway - they warn you it's a steep one! But we got 4, non 4 wheel drive sedans/crossovers up with no issues. (On a damp weekend in April.) It looks more intimidating than it is.

Overall, a fantastic venue! And we're looking forward to a reunion one day!

Great Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect cabin for our weekend getaway! We had 8 people stay and there was more than enough space, bathrooms and beds for everyone. We could have fit a few more people without any problems. It was clean and the kitchen was very well equipped. The view from the deck was awesome and the hot tub out there under the stars at night was just amazing. We had two minor issues that I feel are important to mention. The first is that there were quite a lot of stink bugs inside, fortunately they were really only bothersome at night and only on the upper level. We didn't see any on the lower level. They don't bother me, but for those with an irrational fear of bugs it was quite stressful (but very entertaining for the rest of us!) :) The second issue is how steep the driveway is. We were told it was steep, and I assumed it would be fine, but it almost wasn't. It took a good 4 or 5 attempts for me to make it up. Others just parked at the bottom. So if you plan on going in and out a lot from the cabin you should definitely use an SUV, preferably with 4wd. Those two issue aside, it was just amazing! We all agreed we would stay here again in a heartbeat. I am already planning to bring my husband and parents this fall. Thank you for a great weekend!!

Owner's Response: We appreciate all reviews and this one is no exception. To all of the future guests reading this review, I have only two reminders to each of you. This cabin borders the Shenandoah National Park i.e. we are deep into the woods and we are encroaching on the wildlife's space. Stink bugs/lady bugs in Page County (Luray) are all over. The county sprays routinely for them and we have a cabin pest control program up there as well. In the check-in instructions, we tell all visitors that depending on the weather when you visit, you may or may not see a plethora of stink bugs. Additionally, we have a photo framed on the wall discussing this challenge and we have a dust buster attached to the wall to make sure you can sweep these bugs up without issue; they are harmless but certainly unpleasant. If you visit A Buck's Peak, you will see bugs up there, period. Secondly, the driveway is steep for the first 25 yards and I tell all potential guests that in my initial communication with them. Yet, after that initial 25 yards, the drive zigs and zags to the top of the hill where the cabin sits. Loaded down mini-vans and low-profile automobiles will be challenged going up the hill. However, many clients traverse the hill without issue. In the initial communication, I tell all clients that the first 25 yards are steep so if you are coming to the mountains but NOT familiar with driving in the mountains, be prepared to park at the bottom of the hill and take a long walk up to the cabin. If you are really troubled with hill driving in the Shenandoah Mountains, please find another cabin. We highly recommend all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive in the winter months but have a Ford Escort take the hill with front wheel drive in January during snowfall; it really has to do with how comfortable a driver is with driving in the mountains/wooded area.

Nice

  • 3 of 5

The view was great , cabin was full of dead bugs when we got there. I used the dust buster to sweep all of them off. Other than that the cabin was clean. Stink bugs are a real big problem, one fell into our food as we sat down to eat our dinner one night. The screen was torn on the front porch, I did call the cleaning lady to tell her and she acted as if she knew. I started thinking if she knew why wasn't it repaired before got there. Seemed a little strange, I tried to call Pete to tell him about the screen but the line was busy all morning the day we were leaving. Someone came to the cabin to check on a four wheeler in the shed, but never came in to talk to me and my husband. My daughter Faith and her husband went out to greet them. My husband and I were napping when he came, I told my daughter when I got up that I needed to talk to him. The over all trip was great. We really like the location. Thank you for sharing the cabin with us.

Owner's Response: We always enjoy reviews that provide us feedback on the cabin and how we can make it better. Unfortunately, this client's review is confusing. In the check-in instructions, all clients are told that we have a county-wide stink bug issue and we have a framed photo detailing the issue hanging in the cabin. Hence, we provide the dust buster to help while clients are visiting; I am not sure why she felt compelled to mention that she found the dust buster and vacuumed the bugs; at least she mentioned how clean the cabin was generally. Secondly, I am not sure why the client's kids didn't tell their mom that the handyman was out there, if she wanted to speak to him. He was kind enough not to disturb the client but her kids didn't honor her request. As the cabin owner, I don't know how to use that information. The screen is repaired so that was a great update but the patch job was completed immediately. Finally, for all future clients, everyone is provided the handyman's CELL PHONE number. If you get a busy signal when you call him, you have dialed the wrong number. The cell phone won't go busy and if the handyman doesn't answer right away, the voice mail message asks you to leave a message. All clients are encouraged to print out the check-in instructions with the handyman's cell number listed multiple times. If clients follow the instructions and have a hard copy of the phone number, they won't accidentally dial the wrong number; plus we post the phone number in a frame at the cabin. As mentioned, all reviews are appreciated, but to future clients reading this message, depending on when you visit, the stink bugs and lady bugs are a challenge for all Luray residents, not just our cabin visitors. Secondly, please read the check-in instructions and "frequently asked questions" thoroughly. Thirdly, make sure your kids listen to you when you ask them to do something. However, if they don't listen to you, I am not sure it is helpful to me or future guests to know that so I am not sure it belongs in the review. Hopefully, this guest comes again, understands that we are in the woods and encroaching on the stink bugs/lady bug's turf, reads the check-in instructions thoroughly, and gives her children a lesson in listening to their mom.

Right in the heart of the Shenandoah Mountain, A Buck's Peak is less than five miles off of the Skyline Drive. Biking, antiquing, wine tasting, zip-lining, Yogi Bear Park, Luray Caverns, whiskey tours, ATVing and the coolest movie theater on the East Coast are just a few of the attractions. Recommend you partake in Wine Tasting at both Gadino Cellars (Washington, VA) and Chester Gap cellars in Rhappahanock. Enjoy the antique shops in Washington, Virginia as well as Luray, Virginia. The Luray Movie Theater is a refurbished mansion that shows first-run movies. Finally, you can simply enjoy the 120 jet, 8-person hot tub on the log cabin's huge deck!
