Large, private swimming pool with electric cover. Vacation in a charming, kama`aina style plantation home surrounded by the beauty of nature. Kulike is a unique vacation property in a very tranquil, rural setting. The unique style, and freshness of the home complements the 'off the beaten path' location. It is the perfect location to return to after a day of exploring the island.

Kulike has been used in Pottery Barn photo shoots, and was featured in the February 2012 issue of Coastal Living Magazine. Coastal Living is quoted as saying 'Coming here is about being outside, enjoying the views and spending time with each other'.

Kulike is a classic Hawaiian design with modern amenities. It offers a very quiet country setting, with several acres of property, lovely ocean views, hundreds of tropical plants and trees, AND a 40ft swimming pool (with electric cover). Enjoy our little nature walk showcasing rare palms and plants. Many are labeled for your reference.

Our home was completed in 2005 and building materials were chosen to blend with the coastal elements - Douglas fir walls, hickory pecan floors, and mahogany window frames. We also wanted to be sustainable, and have catchment water, solar hot water, photovoltaic system for the pool pump, and of course our fresh air 'solar' clothes line (of course we also have a clothes dryer in the house).

The interior was designed in the style of a Kama`aina plantation house for a casual easy-going lifestyle. It has wide covered decks, full kitchen (including a commercial style range), two bedrooms with queen beds, one children's room with 2 single beds, laundry, TV/DVD, high speed wireless internet access. Many of the furnishings are antiques.

This is a very special environment for the guest that truly wants to feel as though they have escaped!

This property has a vacation rental permit issued by the County of Maui, and is subject to the rules and restrictions imposed by the County for all short term rental homes. Please understand that we would be unable to accept a rental that does not agree to abide by these rules. Note: properties without a short term rental permit are subject to closure by the County.

1. Neighbors - Please be considerate of our neighbors. Noise carries easily to their homes, particularly in the evening. NO loud music, NO parties, NO amplified sound of any nature at any time. Many neighbors must be up early in the morning to go to work, and it’s important that your use of this property does not impact them in any way.

2. Quiet Hours - Quiet time is from 9pm to 8am.

3. Use of the Property - Additional friends/family CANNOT be invited to the property and it cannot be used as a “meeting place”. The property can be used ONLY by the guests listed on the rental agreement. The County law allows us to accommodate a maximum of two guests x the number of bedrooms.

4. Parking - There is plenty of parking on the property. Vehicles CANNOT be parked on the street at any time. When vehicles are on the street, there is insufficient space for emergency vehicles, fire trucks, the trash truck or neighbors to get down the road.

Additional information with respect to care and maintenance of the house will be included in the rental agreement.

Why Cathy or Melody chose Maui

We visited Maui for years before deciding that we wanted to have our own property. We wanted it to be lush and tranquil. This location was perfect. We secured the land, and then started to design the house. We wanted something very different from our mainland home so that we'd come to Hawaii and feel that we'd escaped the hustle/bustle. The style resembles on old plantation home, but has top quality finish features.

We love our home, and hope that you will too.

Great stay with kids and grandparents

Excellent, beautiful property. Very well maintained, and well designed. We loved spending time in the pool and on the lovely outdoor deck.

Off the beaten path, but that is part of its charm. We are looking to rebook in a few months. :)

Perfect Oasis

Having never been to Maui I was a little leery to be off the beaten tourist path in up country, however, the location turned out to be perfect. Within a short drive of Pa'ia and Haiku, there are plenty of excellent restaurant choices (make sure to book a reservation at Mama's Fish House ... best meal of our trip). The other benefit of the location is the proximity to the road to Hana (really the property is right at the beginning) and a large number of hikes that would otherwise be an hour drive from the typical beach properties in the south and west of Maui. The property is set in a lush rain forest area that was terrific for the kids (5 and 10) to explore. The lanai provided a great spot to have a coffee in the morning or read a book at night. The house itself was very well done. The large family room area was the perfect place to relax and watch some Netflix at night.

Poo Management and House not being kept up

We stayed here for the first time about 1 year ago, we had such an amazing time that we rebooked for Nov 2016. We were dispointed on our arrival to see that the house has not been kept up as well as the grounds. There was some sort of weed killer on the lawn that turned all our feet blue for days. As other have noted there is a serious bug problem with both mosquitos and others. This particular area would not be advisable in the November time.

We were also blamed for not cleaning properly, we have 4 small children and we had asked for a later checkout to help do a final clean but nobody was available to answer the phone that day. Not sure what their expectations are for cleaning but be sure to get clarification..

All in all its too bad this house is not being managed and kept up as it was a real gem.

Owner's Response: I thought I'd share the email received from Dan the day after he arrived at Kulike. This is an exact copy of his email: "Thanks! House is just as great as we remembered from last time!" We value all of our guests and do everything possible to be sure they have a fabulous Maui vacation. Late check-out: We try to accommodate this when it fits the schedule. Dan left a message on Thanksgiving Day at check-out time asking for a late departure. By the time we got the message and returned the call, they had already departed. Each of our rentals is somebody's personal home, and we ask our guests to treat the home with respect. In this case, the housekeeper was appalled when she went to clean the house. There was food on the floor, food on appliances etc, and everything in the house needed serious scrubbing and laundering (including all of the furniture covers). We all know that it’s nice to be on vacation, but we ask guests to leave our homes tidy, with the exception of normal laundry, mopping etc. We don't expect our guests to scrub, but we don't expect the housekeeper to walk in and be ready to cry. We ask that trash be moved to the outdoor cans daily, so don't expect to find the indoor trash cans overflowing, including dirty baby diapers. Nobody has ever left this charming little house in such horrid condition. I wish I could post, as "a picture is worth a thousand words". Despite this, we refunded their full security deposit, but informed the guest that we would be unable to take a future reservation from them. It seems that this has resulted in the review that was posted.

Haiku House

Property management was a pleasure to work with and accommodating. The house is located in a dense vegetation rural area with no air conditioning or afternoon breeze and gets very hot and humid with constant stagnant air and an odor of mold, which I suspect is from the humidity and hot rain that happens frequently in the area. It was so hot and humid in the house our family was not getting any sleep and asked the property management to bring us some fans which helped circulate the air but not cool the house.

Since this house is in a highly vegetated area, there are A LOT of mosquitoes both inside and out (I had a total of 18 bites, most of which were received during the night while sleeping). There are a couple of screens missing from the windows, as well as gaps between the window screens and framing, which let the mosquitoes in the house. Lizards are prevalent on the property and come out at night in fairly large numbers (mainly from dusk to dawn) and crawl all over the outside the house making it impossible to enjoy the patio at that time. The lizards do get in the house quite often as well. While the lizards tend to crawl up the walls rather than across the floor be sure to check your bed sheets and suitcases as I found a couple of the lizards in mine. VRBO does not have an option to post pics from reviewers otherwise I would post the ones taken of our bites and the house lizards. For these reasons, unfortunately, I have to rate it only three stars.

We hope the below response helps to better explain your experience on the north shore of Maui. The little lizards you refer to in your note are geckos, common throughout the tropics and Hawaiian islands; their beauty and acrobatic movements are considered charming by many visitors. Unfortunately, while there is much we can control to make our property comfortable, we cannot control the weather and the lack of trade winds during your visit (the Northeast trade winds and the north shore’s temperate climate provide a very comfortable environment the majority of the time). We have ceiling fans in most living areas and decks to help out on warm down wind days. The tropical north shore maintains its beauty through regular rainfall (although we have seen drought as well) and with this natural irrigation comes limited mosquitoes. Most remain in the forest and are not a problem on the property. The house is constructed of handcrafted mahogany windows and doors with custom screens, to keep the house mosquito free. We will most certainly perform a review to ensure all are secure. Mahalo nui loa for your note, it will help us better communicate with guests in the future.

We had a wonderful time It was one of our best visits. We thought the house was definitely the best value that we can ever remember.

We loved the way the kitchen was set up specially the good quality kitchen knives plates etc. We always bring kitchen utensils and this year they were not required.

Amazing Property!

This is truly an amazing property. With the perfect balance of the feeling of home and all the comfort that entails and the exotic and magnificent setting absolutely grounded on beautiful Maui, I felt instantly transported to paradise. The casual but put-together feel of the space takes attention to detail, a good eye and care. That the owners of this property created and now share such a spot is my great good fortune. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on Maui. Mahalo.

A vacation in Haiku Maui is an opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle, and experience a different side of Maui. Set just a few hundred feet above sea level, Kulike is surrounded by tropical vegetation, with a view down to the ocean.
