About John Ryan

I live in New Orleans and own three beachfront condos, in Pass Christian, Mississippi and Dauphin Island, Alabama and a mountain getaway in Sapphire, North Carolina. I have my kites and my birding interests. I don't like to walk across the highway to experience the beach. I like to live on the beach. So here you have direct beach living with nothing but raw nature between you and the sand, dunes and water.

John Ryan purchased this condo in 2012

Why John Ryan chose Alabama Gulf Coast

This is island living at its best. Having lived on several islands in the Aegean Sea, I know the experience of island living. I know how it feels to see the mainland in the distance while knowing you are not part of the mainland environment. You are in a separate, different world inducing an island state of mind. The rawness of this barrier island captures that sensation. On the island you can experience the intimacy of nature and the beauty of the shimmering Gulf of Mexico in its primal, unadulterated form. The island is a unique place, and this unit at the unique Holiday Isle resort offers everything: opulent condo, luxury resort, with truly incredible views of the beach and Gulf of Mexico from this special high-rise condo (while of course staying high and dry!).

I am a birder. The island is a major stopping point for birds migrating back and forth from Latin America. I like to watch the herons, pelicans, cormorants and other sea and air creatures while enjoying the spacious balcony, using the powerful optics provided. Of course I also like the amenities of a quality resort, in an opulent setting, and we certainly have that here. On the island you witness the divine sense of nature in a pacifying setting without the unnecessary and distracting trappings of modernity and commercialism so prevalent on the mainland. Enjoy the unique harmony of this haven of serenity suitable for undisturbed reflection.

What makes this condo unique

Huge balcony with stunning views in all directions--south, north, east & west. You'll find nothing like it on the mainland!

The whole island is a bird sanctuary. Please use our high-power binoculars and scopes and our tripods. We have a great library focusing on birding, boating, the Gulf of Mexico, and regional wildlife and history.

Extravagant furnishings and distinctive original modern art !

You know you are on an island when you see the Gulf of Mexico before you and Mobile Bay behind you. This is NOT Orange Beach or Destin! No fast food joints! This is supreme luxury and beach living as it was decades ago, except you experience the wonders of the Gulf of Mexico from 80 feet in the air and in an opulent and extremely comfortable setting.

You will not see a traffic light or a crowded beach. You will experience relaxation and stupefying views you will remember and cherish! This resort has all desired amenities: an outdoor pool overlooking the ocean, an indoor heated pool with hot tub, steam room, sauna, tennis court, and a state-of-the-art work-out room overlooking the pool and ocean.

This beautiful 6th floor, 3 BR, 2BA condo is brand new and incredibly spacious! No bunk beds!

Enjoy knock-out views, including miraculous sunrises and sunsets!

Experience serenity as the seclusion and tranquility delude you to feel that your family is alone on the island!

We appointed this condo with quality furnishings for selfish reasons -- because we wanted it to be perfect for us. Expect quality linens, elegant decor, and a well-stocked kitchen, pantry, laundry and bath. We want our guests to enjoy the condo and island and not worry about the picayune details, e.g., toiletries, detergents or condiments!

You will want to come back. We want you to come back.

Stay at Dauphin Island's Holiday Isle Resort. Let the crowds stay on the mainland! Enjoy the seclusion!

Experience the Redneck Riviera like your parents did, but with 21st century luxuries!

We loved staying in this condo. The view from the balcony is amazing!! The condo is so well appointed - everything we needed in the kitchen. I was so amazed at the owner's generosity - extra toilet paper; paper towels; shampoo; etc. I also loved the fact that we felt like family friends allowed to use the condo. We tried to leave everything as clean as possible - wiped down all the kitchen counters; the second load of linens was washing when we left; etc. We only have ONE complaint -- it is a LOOOONG haul to the beach. We clocked it and it was about 1/4 mile each way (because we had to walk down and around the gully). Luckily, my husband had borrowed his twin brother's fishing cart. We had our grandbaby with us and we were able to load up all the beach paraphernalia needed in that cart. You might note somewhere that "wagon needed if you have small children and plan to go to the beach." The information on all the restaurants, etc. was invaluable!! My husband and son caught pompano on the beach and we had fresh fish two different nights - there is something amazing about gulf to table. Thank you for allowing us to rent this condo - we had a great time and will be back!!

Owner's Response: Dauphin Island is a barrier island. It is quite raw and in a natural state. Don't expect an Orange Beach or Gulf Shores beach scene. The condo is directly on the beach but there are protected dunes on the beach and there is a boardwalk through the dunes to get to the water. Please see the photos. It is a good walk to the water.

Another year, another terrific time

  • 5 of 5

We had even more fun the 2nd time around on Dauphin Island, and specifically in this uni. The water and sand seemed cleaner this year (perhaps due to fewer storms), and there isn't anything that can beat the view from the balcony for relaxation. The condo is clean, the beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well-stocked, and there are plenty of little extras provided as well. To let you know what kind of owners John and his brothers are, we had an incident where the canopy they provide was either stolen on the beach or taken down by the Beach Patrol. When I notified John and his brothers of what had happened and offered to purchase a new one for them, they said they understood and not to worry about it. We definitely hope to be back next summer!

Beautiful, clean and well stocked

  • 5 of 5

I just returned home from a week at the condo with my daughters and grandchildren. The condo is beautiful, clean and spacious. It is well stocked with paper goods, trash bags, laundry detergent, soaps, shampoos, etc. Kitchen has lots of items also as well as tons of dishes and a great selection of pots and pans for cooking. John was very helpful sending lots of info about the island, places to eat and explore. He even called and checked in on us mid week. I've never stayed at such a well stocked rental and I have stayed at lots of rentals!! None of us were ready to leave and go home after our week was up. The complex has two wonderful, clean pools and a hot tub. We enjoyed all of them! We had steamed shrimp from Skinners which were delicious! We also ate at Islanders and had take out from Miguels Beach'n Baja. Food was all good. We made a trip to the Outlet Mall in Foley and of course ate at Lamberts. We visited the USS Alabama and had lunch at Ralph & Kacoo's on Battleship Pkwy. We also went to the West End beach to get some gorgeous sunset photos. Everyone was most hospitable and friendly. I would definitely return to the condo and island given the opportunity. Maybe two weeks next time instead of one!! Loved every minute!

Fantastic vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this condo. It was very comfortable, clean and extremely well equipped--truly more like being in your own home than at a rental. We very much appreciated the thoughtfulness of the owners in providing everything from birding information to toiletries and beach toys. The view was fabulous -- a real treat even for a Mobile native who has spent time on Dauphin Island for almost 50 years!

Spacious, nice and clean

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with our stay. The condo was very nice and stocked with everything we could possibly need. We took advantage of the indoor pool during the last two days of our trip due to the rain. Will definitely stay here again but next time will take more groceries - the island's restaurant selection was not the best.

Owner's Response: You should bring groceries. This ain' t Orange Beach or Gulf Shores. There is a fairly decent store in Bayou LaBatre (Food Tiger), which you should pass if you are arriving from the west. This is about 20 miles from the island on Hwy. 188. There are a couple of small convenience stores on the island. There is also a decent grocery about sixteen miles from the island on Hwy. 193. It is called Greer’s. There is the Ship ’n’ Shore store on the island near the main stop sign corner of Bienville Blvd. and Hwy. 193. Ship ‘n’ Shore has some groceries and also DVD’s and a lot of hardware and stuff you might find in a country store.

Car: recommended

Dauphin Island is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Enter the island by crossing a three mile long high rise bridge which opened in 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from Fort Morgan offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 ¾ miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. Approximately 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island is a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations from Latin America.

Many species of birds migrate between North America and Latin America. A great many stop at Dauphin Island in spring and fall. We provide two sets of binoculars and a tripod. We also provide several powerful zooming spotting scopes with tripods to permit you to examine detail.
