Kohala Coast Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Lovely cottage on 8 acres with wide open vistas

The house has 1 bedroom and a lovely designated sleeping area on an enclosed lanai. It sleeps 2 with extra sleeping arrangements for 2 children or familiar adults. This charming rental is truly a unique way to experience Hawaii with expansive ocean views and wide open spaces. This little house has personality plus with cathedral ceilings, warm lighting and a large wrap around lanai. The lanai on two sides is enclosed with windows from floor to ceiling. Dining is stunning with views of fields and tropical trees to the Pacific. The house sits on eight acres so there is privacy and quiet. Sliding glass doors and many windows offer a sense of being indoor-outdoor. There are no stairs to navigate. All is kept clean.

There is 1 bathroom, and as often in Hawaii homes, there is the option of an outdoor shower with a colorful garden to provide privacy.

The surrounding area is lush and beautiful. The quiet winding roads are perfect for long walks through farmlands, flowers, coffee, guava trees. In some spots both the mountain Mauna Kea and the ocean can be seen. Wild pheasants and turkeys even a few peacocks scurry along the roads.

The location is a central stepping off point to explore the island -- the volcano to the east and world class beaches to west less than an hour away. The historic Honokaa Town and gorgeous Wiapio valley are nearby and Kalopa Park created to protect native species is just 4 miles away.

There are beach chairs, snorkel gear, swimming noodles, boogie board, and beach towels provided.

A fenced in area adjoining the lanai is available for visiting pets to enjoy.

Away from the madding crowds. Bird Lovers will appreciate this Cottage.

We loved our stay at the cottage. We stayed here our entire time on the island. It is remote and nestled in country with views of the ocean from inside the cottage as well as the lanai. It is very quiet, no traffic noise, just the crowing of nearby chickens and the singing of the birds. It would be best to arrive at the cottage while it is still light outside. The directions are good. We knew we would be arriving after dark, Jane made sure there were lights on in the cottage upon our arrival. There are solar lights at the driveway entrance. We googled mapped the cottage using the aerial view, if we hadn't we would have driven past the narrow paved turn off road that meanders through farms/plantations and another home.

The cottage uses solar with a back up generator. We had no problems. Jane makes sure that there is plenty of power and just minutes away if needed, but we did not require her assistance as the cottage provided everything we needed for a great vacation. The bed inside the house was comfortable as well as the sofa and chairs. The kitchen is well equipped with dishes, pots and pans, and eating utensils. There is a gas range and full size oven, good size refrigerator with a freezer. There is plenty of hot water, fluffy towels and lots of privacy. There is even a washer and dryer, best used when there is sunshine, but a big plus.

We loved all the birds that came to the bird feeder in the yard. Jane had bird seed in a container on the lanai to fill the feeder. There is a resident cat by the name of Shadow, he is very friendly and will greet you daily but does not stay in the house. He also doesn't bother the birds at the feeder. Nice Cat!!

We enjoyed being on the East side of the island..the Kona side is to commercial and way to crowded for us. We did drive to the Kona side to Whale watch and snorkel, we found that Kona is easy to get to via Highway 190 off of Hwy 19, and Hilo is even easier just follow Hwy 19 south and you there. Near the Cottage are several villages to visit and shop and several have farmers markets.

We will stay here again, when we come to the Big Island.

Lovely, peaceful, simple

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the cottage in November! Yes, it rained quite a lot, but it was so relaxing to sleep at night to the sound of the rain. It's an easy drive to the dry side of the island if rain isn't your thing.

The cottage is well-equipped and had everything that we needed. It is definitely "off the beaten path," which we loved, but if resort vacations are your thing, this probably isn't the best choice for you.

Jane, the manager, is super helpful and responded to questions by text almost immediately. Lilo, one of the cats, is super friendly, and we fell in love with him during our week-long stay.

Breakfast at the table on the lanai is wonderful and refreshing. Wifi and TV worked great. Beds are comfortable. Shower indoors or out. Hot water on demand means it's always available when you need it. The cottage is completely off the grid, so just be aware that a generator will likely have to run periodically. It's a distance from the house, and is only barely audible in the bedroom if the windows are open. It didn't bother us at all.

If rustic, quaint, and avoidance of the party crowd on the Kona side are your thing...this is a great choice! Be sure to check out the nearby town of Honokaa and the Waipio Valley. We loved our stay on the scenic side of the island!

Beautiful place.

  • 5 of 5

This house and everything around it was beautiful. Jane was so helpful and kind. Thank God it was pet friendly, we made sure that we took care of the place like it was our own. A nice place to get away from it all. Also a short walk away from the Vanilla Company. Mosquitos were annoying, but bring spray and keep the doors shut. Glad we got to stay there :)

Peaceful country setting

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed three nights at the Paauilo cottage as part of our week long exploration of the island and were delighted by the country atmosphere here. The house was well equipped with lots of little extras that the friendly manager, Jane, invited us to help ourselves to. Because we arrived early, we first stopped in to enjoy a yummy vanilla shake at the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, which is just up the hill from the house, a delightful little place. There are no other eating establishments in close proximity, so plan accordingly. We were lucky enough to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle and used it to drive down the Waipio Valley. This unbelievably beautiful valley is only about 25 minutes from the house. If you don't have 4 wheel drive, you can book a tour to take you down. (The view from the top is pretty amazing too.) It was fun to explore the northern Kohala coast via the loop drive out of Waimia. So many different landscapes on this island. We spent our third day in Captain Cook snorkeling at Two Step beach (amazing) and then to Kona for some shopping and shave ice. When I booked, I did not realize that Kona is a one and a half hour drive from Paauilo, so be aware of that--this is the BIG Island after all. This house was comfortable and clean. We opted to sleep on the enclosed lanai as it made us feel as though we were sleeping outdoors. The sunrise was beautiful.

Peace, Quiet and Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We spent three weeks in this rental, two weeks with just the two of us and the final week with three of our grown children. What a gorgeous setting high above stands of Eucalyptus trees on property that was once sugar cane land, as is most of this side of the island. The cottage is well equipped - no need to bring anything (i.e. hair dryer, iron). It is off the grid so one needs to be aware when using electrical appliances - there is plenty of power and it even runs the washer and dryer, just be aware that running too many appliances at once is not a good idea. It is a bit of a drive to just about anywhere but we soon got used to that - just check out the location if distance to beaches, Kona, Volcano Park, is an issue for you, The trade off is possibly the most peaceful spot on the island with no other house in sight and views that will blow you away. The dawn from here is particularly gorgeous. If you desire a Luau we can recommend the Mauna Kea Beach Resort, again a bit of a drive but worth it. Last but certainly not least, our thanks and gratitude go out to Jane the Manager. What a lovely soul. She is a mine of information and is attentive without "overdoing" it. We would recommend this rental to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat and a chance to recharge.

Excellent peace and quiet with good uplands walking

  • 5 of 5

We spent two days here in November 2014, and wished we’d booked a couple more. This is a nicely designed and well-equipped cabin, surrounded by green fields and a Koa forest, and quite near the Vanilla company show-room and coffee/lunch place. We especially liked the dining area and comfie bed on the glassed/screened lanai, and the option of showering outdoors. This is a great retreat for a couple looking for total peace and quiet, as well as for anyone looking for a chance to do some walking along the lightly-trafficked backroads of upland Hamakua coast. If you are interested in walking, do be sure to ask Jane for directions to Maniene road – we had a lovely 90 minute walk up there, past some giant trees (koa or euculyptus robusta?) and through lovely stands of ohi’a. There’s also good walking the other direction, past the Vanilla company. We appreciated the book left in the cabin: Quentin Tomich’s Hawai: Perspectives on Hamakua History. Have a look if you are interested in the human or ecological history of the area. Thanks to Jane for helping to make our stay so comfortable, enjoyable and interesting
