A Turn of the Century Shingled cottage, Tastefully renovated with winding stair cases, 3 Bedrooms, Loft & a Sterns & Foster sleep sofa in the living room Sleeps 8. 2 Baths open concept down stairs with modern Kitchen. Located in a quiet section of Peaks Island away from the hustle and bustle of the village yet only a 15 min. walk to, it's resturants, library, shops, grocery store, lobster shack, bike rental, Art stutios, filling station Health Center, Churches and more. We are also close to our tennis, sailing, and social club. and of course the famous 'Rock Bound Cost of Maine' on our back shore with its panoramic views of the open ocean and the outer islands of Casco Bay which makes a wonderful place for Surf fishing, picnicking, cookouts, barbeques and lobster bakes. Nearly the entire back shore is in the public domain.

This has been Russ & Shirley's home since 1969. We raised our four children here. It began as a summer cottage and has long since become our year round home. We are both now retired and spend our summers in the Willard Beach area in South Portland where we take care of our granddaughter, Aminah. We had previously considered selling our property but due to our great success with VRBO we have taken it off the market.

We believe we live on the best part of the Island. We are away from the hustle and bustle of down front and from the traffic on the back shore and we are only steps from the beach.

Relaxing and Great Sunsets!

Thanks, Russ, for a very relaxing week. The sunsets from your porch are amazing. This is probably my fifth stay on the island, and this was the nicest place I've stayed. My daughter especially loved our treasure hunt for all the wood animal statues.

Peaks Island Vacation

We loved the location especially. Nice quiet street down to the beach. The view from the porch is spectacular. The afternoon sun can be intense but Russ has blinds on the porch so we could still be out there.

House was well stocked with everything that we needed. It was clean and well maintained.

Will definitely go back.

Disappointed in owner

Extremely disappointed that one month from our departure I have still not received my "refundable deposit" from the owner. Have sent many emails to the owner and he has ignored all of them. I brought my Mom up for her 86th birthday surprise my sister and brother in law and niece and my daughter and her husband brought my 5 yr old grandson up. My cousins who are "Islanders" were there for a visit as well. So tgere werecpkenty of witnesses. We couldn't get warm and kept blankets and coats on. We arrived on Friday night October 7, 2016 to a home with no heat as the owner said he would have it on for us (that didn't turn on until Saturday when he showed up to gather his personal belongings)and vacated the home (in pristine condition) on Monday October 10, 2016. We vacation on Peaks every year and my family has been visiting since the early 1900's. Seriously? The stove was unsafe and you could not read the knobs and the smoke detectors went off when the cooktop was turned on. The bad reviews are accurate. Never again. Watch out.

Owner's Response: Tara requested by phone that I supply heat during thier stay. She agreed to pay an additional $50.00. She gave me the times they would be getting up in the morning and the time they would be going to bed. I explaind to her that our oil heater was programable and I would program the heater to go down to 60 degees,1 hour after the time she said they would be going to bed and the heat went up to 72 degrees one hour before the earliest time they would be getting up. If she felt it was cold when she came in, It must have been after 11:30 P.M. that was when the heater was programed to go down to 60 degrees and even then the heat was on. Yes Tara, the heat was on when you arrived. I also told her there is an electric space heater in the upstairs bath that would work very well as supplimental heat if they wanted to turn it on when they went in and turn it off when they left. It warmed the bathroom very quickly. I asked Tara to keep the doors to the bedrooms closed while the heat was on as oil is awfully expensive on the Island and she willingly agreed. When I went in to check the house after they had left it was very clean. When I went upstairs it was hot in the hallway. The bathroom door was open. I went in and found the thermostat set on 75% for the electric base board heat and the space heater was warm to the touch but unplugged. One of the bedroom doors was open and the room was hot. Someone had put a window fan in to cool it and it was running when I went in. I later discussed this with Tara and told her I had to wait until I got my electic bill for the period they were here before I could return her adjusted security deposit. Tara Emailed me that my stove wasn't working. I checked it out and it is fine. When I told her this she said, she turned a burner on and it smoked and set the alarm off there was probably some fat on the burner. They didn't eat here anyway, she said. Last year we put brand new knobs on The stove. I returned $424.00 of thier deposit on Nov. 19 2017. I retained the balance for Heat as agreed and $26.00 for the wasted electricity. Russ

What a great house! We have stayed many years on the island, and this was by far one of the best cottages we rented! The location is ideal, the view is great and the house was perfect! Thank you so much for letting us enjoy your house for the week!

Russ does his best to make you feel comfortable. The porch is an extremely welcome part of this property. We spent many hours especially the sunsets. Enjoyed falling asleep listening to the waves. The surround sound & flat screen TV was enjoyed by all during the rainy day. We did not have any problems with the neighbors, in fact, we exchanged quite a bit of conversation with both sides during a vacation. Walking up & down the beach, picking up shells was a lot of fun during low tide.

Should not be rented

The location is indeed perfect. The kitchen is not equipped to cook . There are not enough pots or pans to serve a family of 4. The stove top is so old that the numbers on the handles needed to be written in with magic marker. The house is filled with unnecessary decorations that just get in the way. The kitchen window leaked all over the sill. There were leaks in the upstairs bedrooms. The pull out couch was not fit to sleep on. The neighbors on both sides were rude and complained about us using the beach. There has been issues with the one neighbor as she told us for years. The closets in one of the bedrooms was made of cardboard. There was not enough lamps or lighting to read at night. The owners have not put any money back into fixing the rental at all. The porch needs tons of work along with painting. The washer and dryer did work fine. The beach was great but the neighbors were awful. We were not loud or did not have any parities and they were the rudest people I have ever met. Their is definitely a problem with those who rent and those who do not on this island. I would never pay that money to stay there again. I am amazed at the reviews that are listed here. The fact that we struggled to cook every night due to the lack of pots and pans made me furious. Never again. we have used vrbo many times and this was one of the worst experiences. We managed to have a good time, but would not recommend. We received our deposit right away without a problem. When we did called about the lack of utensils and cookware they sent us into the a closet that had some much junk it we never found what we needed. We also own a rental on a lake and would never leave our renters without the kitchen essentials needed.

Owner's Response: Frankly were puzzeld as to why Lou Ann waited since July of last year to post her comments. But it does give us an opportunity to point out to future Guests that we havent been unresponsive to the needs of our guest. Since Lou Ann stayed here, we have put on a new roof, we have new porch funiture, the Jenn Air has new knobs and works just fine, we bought new lamps for the bed rooms and we have the materials on sight to replace the kitchen and bathroom sky lights as soon as weather permits. Please note we have two five star reviews and one four star review since last July.
