About Mary Anderson

My name is Mary ('The Manager'). I am also a licensed real estate agent in the state of Georgia and I would love to help you shop for a 2nd home.

Mary Anderson purchased this house in 1985

Why Mary Anderson chose Savannah

The owner has kept this 3 story townhouse as his 2nd home because he loves the downtown Savannah life.

What makes this house unique

This home was not staged or decorated in a contrived faux antique style but instead was already a genuine treasure trove of Savannah lore and antiques. For vacation guests it was kept true to its historic roots, simply cleaned spotlessly and given fresh linens.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The location was awesome and we felt at home. The history about the house, along with the photos, add character to an already unique home.

Spacious and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the house. There was plenty of room for our family to spread out and the beds were very comfortable. This house is not for someone who enjoys technology though. There were very limited channels and the wifi did not work great. Overall our experience was nice staying here.

Fun townhouse for a fun Savannah weekend.

  • 5 of 5

Property is as described. Its fun an cozy house. We had fun meeting the Mckenzie's through all the old pictures and the family tree. Addie became the conversation for the weekend and it made the stay a lot of fun. The kids give it a thumbs up and would love to stay again.

Best vacation in years!

  • 5 of 5

We could not have been more pleased with the time we had on our vacation. Staying at this property was one of the biggest factors in the success of our trip. It's located on one of the most picturesque streets in town. Parking was supremely easy with spots right out front on the street. We parked and pretty much left the car there as everything was within walking distance. Plentiful dining options are nearby with Clarys, made famous in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, being an absolute highlight for us. Excellent value with this property, its interior possessing a welcoming and cozy decor. The whole home was tastefully appointed and full of interesting antiques. Was like walking right off the pages of a history book. We would absolutely recommend it to friends and anyone in the market for a top-notch vacation experience. Can't wait to come back next year!

Cozy Home with lots of Historic Charm

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to Savannah, and we were very pleased with this lovely historic home. It is in a great, quiet neighborhood on the famously pretty Jones Street. The home is about halfway between the river and Forsyth Park, and you can easily walk to each in about 15-20 minutes. It was very convenient to leave our car right out front on Jones street and walk everywhere throughout the city. The furnishings are cozy and antique-y, and add to the historic charm of the house. There's a great side porch overlooking The neighborhood that was our favorite place for afternoon drinks. The manager was very easy to work with and knowledgeable about the area. We would certainly recommend this great house to others, and we will aim to stay here again next year.

We felt so at home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I found this house to be exactly what we hoped for during our family trip to Savannah. We slept 4 people very comfortably. The location was perfect, we wanted to be in a historic neighborhood rather than on a commercial strip. This is close enough to walk to stores and restaurants but quiet at night except for cars driving by. It has a lot of character, and is cozy rather than spartan or stark like some vacation rentals. It does feel a lot like you are visiting a friend or a family member rather than staying at a hotel. There are family photos on the walls and the bookshelves are full of books, so you know you are borrowing someone else's home, but in a good way. Plenty of toilet paper, bath and dish soaps were provided. The home was remarkably clean. Beds were comfortable. We used the kitchen mainly to make coffee and breakfast. We sat on the side porch before and after dinner, with cocktails and we very much enjoyed the neighborhood atmosphere. Check in process was easy. We have no complaints and would choose to stay again when we return to Savannah.

I don't like giving poor reviews, but I have to say McKenzie House was very disappointing.. I was very excited to stay in this historical house, but upon arrival it was clear that this lovely old home has not been taken care of. Although the walls have been painted with interesting colors, and all the woodwork in the house has been painted white, the white paint has been slapped on right over chips and gouges and areas needing repair. Doors don't close properly and in the case of the door to the master toilet area, instead of fixing the problem, there is a hook and eye screwed in to hold the door closed. There are dirty fingerprintson the walls and doors, and knobs are loose throughout the house. Towels are old and worn, and the bath towels are the smallest I've ever seen anywhere. The three drawer dresser in one of the bedrooms has one drawer that is full of wood, and a second drawer full of tools and empty juice bottles, leaving limited space for clothing. TV in one bedroom has reception so bad, it is almost unusable. The house was only surface clean. The porch off the master bath could not be used and had a sign saying, don't go on this porch. Ongoing repairs. There was no evidence of any repair work. The furniture downstairs is basically a hodgepodge of old furniture in too bad shape to be called antique. There was a very musty smell in the downstairs rooms, and one of the upstairs bedrooms had a very strong turpentine-like odor. Essentially, this is a lovely old home that has not been loved enough to repair properly. My overall reaction to this home was sadness. Considering the age and history of this home, one would think the owners would take pride in it and put the effort into repairing it and maintaining it properly. I hope the owners will read this and take this criticism in the helpful way it is intended. With not too big an investment, and a little TLC, this wonderful historic home can be a wonderful journey back in time.

Owner's Response: The owner takes so much pride in this house, if he see this review we will have 2 sad people out there. He is the coolest 80 year old man in Savannah and is here every single week and loves to upgrade his house. The house is 141 years old. Without me even asking he has added an entire bathroom, upgraded the back bedroom to a King size, and added a 2nd bedroom television within the past 6-12 months. He leaves to stay at the beach when we have vacation guests but then he is back and is usually the first one in the house after each guest checks out. He just replaced the blinds in the sun room with plantation shutters. The "turpentine" smell may have been from some fresh paint. The 3rd floor side porch has always had that sign asking guests not to use it. This is for safety reasons. You get to use two other private porches: a different back porch on that top floor, and the side porch off the kitchen, on the middle level. Hook and eye closures are indeed the way you lock some of the doors. The presence of hook and eye locks has bothered one other person as noted in another review but personally I cannot see why it is so off-putting as it does not alter how the door shuts. So many people have been totally happy with this home, and since we launched it on VRBO years ago it was never in any better condition than it is now. I will suggest to the owner that we look for any places where fingerprints are on the wall and that they get touched up or repainted. I will also try to figure out which towels might be frayed, but all are normal size bath towels and it is my intention to provide nice towels to everyone (this is one of the few areas where the owner is not involved). It costs a small fortune to own and maintain a home this age in the Historic District of Savannah. Overall, it is clear that some guests are not aware of the cosmetic imperfections they may observe when staying in someone's historic 1875 home. The photos show the house literally, with its character and old furniture. I would certainly encourage those who prefer everything to be new and perfect to stay at a hotel, or one of the few new construction rental homes we have here in Savannah. Before you book this home discuss your expectations with me so I can try to prevent a mismatch like this one. -Mary (agent, friend and neighbor of the owner)
