If you are an artist, a bird watcher, or outdoor sports fan, you will love this location. Right on the Back River with incredible views of ospreys. Walk to beach and to canal. See colors of sunset reflected in water! Relax!
This is a very private location sitting on 2.3 acres of protected marshland, with commanding views that expand to over a mile. There are 3 osprey nests in the back. Kayak to the beach. Great food and ice cream nearby in quaint Monument Beach. I have two driveways with parking for four automobiles. New home (built in 2002) with radiant heat, fireplace, A/C, and large windows to let in natural light all day long.
The master bedroom has a king bed on the first floor with sliding doors that let you view the marsh all day and all night long. The guest suite is the largest room in the house with a queen bed and room to deploy air mattresses, crib, or pack and play space for children. The room has a door. The cozy nook, also on the second floor, has a full size bed and a privacy screen, but no door.
The hot tub is open to guests most of the year, except for extreme cold and snow. The kitchen has recently been updated with new appliances. There is a TV and sitting area in the guest suite and a larger TV with comfortable furniture in the living room. Use the gas fireplace on those chilly Cape Cod nights. Small sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards can be launched from the shore. I can provide you with names of rental outfits nearby. Feel free to use the outdoor shower when you return from your adventures. Several Adirondack chairs are on the lawn, and there is a large deck for relaxing.
The beds and furniture are of top quality, fairly new, and extremely comfortable. Driving distance to Boston is exactly one hour and to Providence 50 minutes, longer during rush hours. Historical New Bedford is 30 minutes, Newport 1 hour, Provincetown 90 minutes, Hyannis 25 minutes, Falmouth 15 minutes.
Holly Berry's is a great breakfast and lunch place across the street. The Lobster Trap is a very popular restaurant and gathering place within walking distance. Trading Post lounge is a 5 minute car wide and offers a pub atmosphere and good food. Beaches and ice cream are nearby.
Shore Road can be busy at times, so use caution when entering or exiting the driveway. At night you may want to close the street facing windows if you are sensitive to occasional traffic sounds. Shore Road is also a bike route. You will see hundreds of bicyclists during your stay. It is a busy road though, so practice safe biking. Peter Pan and local Cape Cod bus has a stop close by. Buses go all over the Cape as well as directly to Boston, Logan Airport, and Providence.

About Richard Menard
I moved to Cape Cod 5 years ago after becoming a widower and my sons' finished college. For the past 3 years I have been a live-in airbnb host, earning Super Host status with many 5 star reviews and my responsiveness to guest inquiries. I have recently become engaged and will be living in mid-Cape. I have come to know much of Cape Cod in these years, and love the life style and beauty of this special and unique geography. I have enjoyed meeting folks from around the world who come here for a week or two. Coming from a family tradition of hospitality, I find happiness in providing a place for you to make memories, rest, and recharge your batteries. I started a kayaking club 3 years ago and it has grown to over 100 members. I work for Cape Cod Health Care as a Population Health Analyst.
Richard Menard purchased this House in 2012
Why Richard Menard chose Monument Beach
This property has had 5 owners since colonial times, the first being the Bourne family. A famous artist lived here for 30 years; her sculptures are exhibited throughout the world. The house was rebuilt in 2002 by a researcher at Woods Hole who admired the view for years. The house he built is a labor of love, with thick walls, solid doors, and impeccable workmanship.
What makes this House unique
A wall of windows on the first floor provides an ever-changing salt water view due a four foot tidal differential. Ospreys arrive in March and leave at the end of September, providing a spectacular show of nature. At certain times of the year you can see the water bubbling with fish as they struggle to escape from stripped bass. Sometimes you see the bass themselves becoming the osprey's dinner. There are three osprey nests in the back yard; each nest has one fledgling plus the parents. You can easily view them with binoculars, which I supply. At low tide, the egrets and herons appear to find their dinner. There are always birds to see. I also keep a bird feeder which attracts cardinals, finches, and an occasional hummingbird. The grounds are planted with fragrant flowers and shrubs.

The location is gorgeous, the house was clean and beautiful, and the host was professional, organized, and very helpful in everything. Overall, a wonderful stay.
Great location without all of the Cape traffic!
Wonderful spot for bird watchers, paddle borders and kayakers. We pretty much had the whole marsh to our selves. It was so relaxing to be able to paddle without motorized boat traffic around. House is stocked with all of the basics and then some...Washer, dryer, sheets, towels & kitchen necessities. We loved the daily hot tub soaks 😀. Easy access to Upper Cape locations. We would definitely return again. The road out front is pretty busy so if you are family with small children who tend to wander this may not be the best location.
Bourne Vacation House Review
I don’t usually write reviews but since I make my decisions on HomeAway from reviews I thought I would share our experience. House was nice and pretty much as described on HomeAway site. We really like the area and have stayed on nearby Mashnee Island several times. The Back River Marsh area behind the home was also very nice and as mentioned there are several Osprey nests and an abundance of other birds and wildlife. We enjoy Kayaking so we brought our Kayaks with us and paddled around the Back River area as well as out towards Mashnee Island Beach. Watch out for tide if you go Kayaking out towards Mashnee Island under the bridges by the Lobster Trap because if you’re going against the tide it can be difficult. Also putting in Kayak behind the property is somewhat difficult. There is really no good spot to launch even though its mentioned in the home description about a point to launch kayaks and boats the area is obviously marshlands so it’s very muddy and you sink in about 6 inches on every step. Obviously we were able to launch but not the greatest conditions. As mentioned in Home is right on road so it is a little noisy and very difficult to get in and out of driveway. Overall home and area is very nice and as I said earlier we like the area because of its proximity to several beaches and easy access on/off the island being right near Bourne Bridge. My son like the Hot Tub and used it quite a bit. We ate at Holly Berry’s and Lobster Trap which are very close walking distance so that was nice. A few things did put me off a little. Not very big deals but when you pay good money for something they did bother me a little. Reservation very clearly said check in 4pm and check out 11am. We checked in at 4pm but day before checkout he texts me that checkout is at 10am and he is coming early to do yard work. I indicated to him that reservation says 11am and after several texts he said he made an error and to stay to 11am but if I could leave early he would appreciate it??? We left before 10 to avoid any hassle. Like I said not a big deal but during the week he also sent an artist out to property to do something for a painting of back yard sunset. Once again not a huge deal I said ok to her coming but it was our vacation and didn’t really expect people to be around. Home was not as clean as it should have been especially when there is a cleaning fee involved, left over food in fridge, outdoor shower was filled with cobwebs and leaves (Which I cleaned)
Thanks for staying at my home. I really goofed with the check out times - the house is listed on multiple web sites and it is challenging to keep all in sync.. Usually checkout time is 10 am but I didn't communicate that to you and apologize the I made you uncomfortable, I like to meet my guests whenever possible.
Regarding the kayaking, we've had scores of launches from the point just as the water curves to the South, but we usually launch just before high tide to grab the outgoing tide. You're right! Fighting the tide is difficult and dangerous.
I'm glad you had a chance to meet Laura, the artist. Her painting was a wedding present and I wanted her to see the view in all it's summer glory.
Thanks for cleaning the outdoor shower. It had been shut down for repairs.
Great home in a great location!
The home was clean and spacious. Perfect for entertaining or just relaxing on the outside deck overlooking the pond
Great views, clean home & wonderful stay.
We rented this property for the weekend, it was very clean and bright views that were amazing. It certainly helped that the weather was beautiful for February. There was plenty of space for us and would rent again for sure.
Located in between Monument Beach and Gray Gables, this property offers access to many fun activities on the water, or, you can just hang out and enjoy the view and sunshine. The head of the Shining Sea Bike Path is a 15 minute drive away. Great salt water fishing on the canal or from the shore, plus many stocked fresh water ponds. Shell fishing is also very popular year round, and can be done in the back yard from November to April. There are many good places to eat nearby, along Shore Road and also across the bridge at Buzzards Bay. Bourne has lots of conservation land for hiking with views of bogs and ocean. The house is close to the Bourne Bridge so it is easy to get here and to leave. Along the Buzzards Bay coast the traffic is light to moderate even in the peak season. Firework displays many towns on and off Cape are visible from the beaches.
