Where do I begin. The pictures and descriptions of the property don't begin to explain how large and beautiful this location is. We vacationed with our 2 daughters and their families, 6 adults and 4 children total, and there was more than enough room for all. The house is three levels. The bottom level has 2 bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms, and a large bathroom.
The next level (entry) has a bedroom, hugh kitchen, dining room, and family room. All the floors are stone and the walls and ceilings have wood beams everywhere.
The upper level has 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms.
Outside is amazing, with 2 separate shaded areas for gathering and dining. There are plants, trees, herbs, etc around the property. There is a green lawn area the size of a soccer field. Everything is beautiful.
Lucca is about ten minutes away by car. About a block away from the house, there is a bar/coffee place, small corner store, and butcher. There was also a vegetable/fruit stand that opened about 5 days a week, with fresh produce available. Not sure if he shows up all year. Train station about 10 minutes away by car.
Bottom line, would highly recommend this site.
We stayed at the villa Tre Cancelli for a week at the end of August 2011 and really enjoyed our stay. The villa has been completely renovated in typical rustic style, very tastefully done with quality finishes. It was very clean and well-maintained. The rooms are large and comfortable with a feeling of plenty of space for up to 11 people, with many different places to sit and eat. The gardens are extensive and attractive and there is a feeling of space all around with views of the vineyards to the north. The outside eating area is covered by a pergola and vines and overlooks the pool area, which is great for children and teenagers.
The villa is about 5 minutes drive from the centre of Lucca and within a couple of minutes walking distance from a bar, grocery/bakery shop and butchers. Rossanna who owns the villa looked after us very well, and even showed us how to work the pizza oven - we spent one evening lighting the fire and baking pizzas on the stone, not as easy as you might think!
We were a group ranging in age from 14 to 83 but found that there was plenty to do there to keep everyone happy. We hired bikes in Lucca to go round the walls and through the town, went to Florence on the train for the day, visited the local vineyard, went to a local antiques market and an open air evening concert in the town.
Lucca is such a lovely place full of interesting little shops, and good just to wander around and sit outside the cafes or explore the churches. We needed another week to go to the coast or up into the hills which will have to wait until next time.
Our two families had a wonderful week here with our 5 teenage children. The property is very spacious and newly renovated, whilst maintaining its character. The grounds were also very spacious and private with plenty of space for ball games as well as lounging beside the pool and eating under the pergola. Small bar and convenience store within walking distance good for buying breakfast supplies. Everything was well maintained, well equipped, spotlessly clean and in working order. The owners speak good English, live nearby and were very friendly and anxious to help, but did not invade our privacy. We did not find any restaurants in walking distance. The pool is brand new and is the same depth all across which was fine for us but may be an issue if you have small children. The road is fairly busy, but the house is set well back from the road and there are lots of mature trees in the grounds so there is no traffic noise. When you can tear yourself away from the beautiful house and peaceful garden and pool, Lucca has lots to offer and the coast, Pisa and the Garfagna mountains are all within easy day trip distance-beware small winding mountain roads and Italian drivers! We took the train from Lucca to Florence-inexpensive and easy but not very fast. If you are looking for somewhere in Northern Tuscany that is pretty and peaceful but not remote, which provides a good good base for exploring and has a beautiful small town nearby, this is the place!
This beautiful farmhouse is only 2 kms away from the famous walled city of Lucca with it's tree lined avenue circumventing the town. It is a fascinating area with picturesque countryside, olive groves, vineyards and many famous antique villas nearby to visit.
Further afield is the well known seaside town of Torre del Lago where the famous composer Giacomo Puccini had one of his residencies which is open to the public. There is also the theatre where his operas are performed every year at the edge of Lake Massciucoli.
Very near the coastal towns of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi.
Very near to the mountain area known as the Garfagnana
