About Rita Todd-Kornbau
We discovered the beautiful Elk River Wilderness area in 2003, when we purchased an unfinished cabin. (Which is located across the road from this Retreat) One of our passions is renovating propertys and putting Rita's interior design skills to use. So, we turned that unfinished structure into a unique family retreat. It has been the site of our annual family gathering, which included some years as many as 40 attendees! The property turned from a quaint cabin on 13 acres, to a RV/Tent campground with night time gatherings around the bonfire to cook up S'mores and share great stories! And we mustn't forget the many fun times spent swimming, lounging, and fishing at the boat launch located near the Elk River Fish Hatchery! We live just an hour away, so we can enjoy it even for just a night. And other family menbers travel from the Portland area several times a year to just enjoy the peace and quiet and beauty of both the river and the beach~ just a 15 minute drive away. We have expanded our horizons and now winter in sunny Mexico. Life is an adventure that we enjoy sharing with people.
Rita Todd-Kornbau purchased this House in 2012
Why Rita Todd-Kornbau chose Curry County
We have lived near the Southern Oregon Coast since 1973. Discovering the amazing beauty of the Elk River was a hidden treasure that we had missed out on for many years. Once we discovered it's aqua-marine pristine waters set within the beautiful tree lined canyon where waterfalls abound~it was as if we had traveled far away from home, but it was just an hour away all along! All we needed to do was to take a drive and enjoy the adventure of discovering what life has to offer. So now we want to make that experience available to others. And, if you love the beach, it's just a quick 15 minute drive to the magnificent Port Or ford coastline. Here, you can enjoy awesome ocean views, go for long walks on the beach, fly kites, (wind is often present at the coast!) or maybe even get lucky enough to see a seal or whale poke their head up to take a peek at you! Also, if you love fresh seafood, stop by the marina and see what the 'catch of day' is!
What makes this House unique
Most of the the river frontage where much of the fishing is done on the Elk is privately owned, which limits water access. Our River House gives us and our guests the freedom to enjoy the river right out the back door! Plus, it is just 1/4 mile from the public boat launch at the fish hatchery! The spacious living area creates the perfect gathering space for family and friends to share meaningful time together.... Forming memories that last a lifetime! And reliving those exciting fish stories about the 'big one that got away' or showing the photos of the one who was not so lucky! During the fishing season it is quite entertaining watching all the boats drift by. Since the river does not allow motor boats, the serenity is never disturbed. Guests have shared that the low level of the river during summer is a benefit because it allows children to play safely in the water. But, that there also are deeper pools near by for adult swimming. Perfect for aqua babies of all ages!

Great location - some amenities lacking
The property was clean, spacious, and large enough to handle six overnight comfortably and nine for dinner. The group thought that it was a good deal with great ambiance for a fishing trip.
Negatives were that there was no cell service nor wi-fi at the house, so we were out of communication. Nobody was happy about that. The other smaller issue was that there was not enough hot water the day we arrived. We were able to talk with the owner the 2nd day and she asked us to re-set a 2nd water heater located under the house. The re-set worked and the hot water was fine thereafter, but not being able to take a hot shower the first night may some of the group unhappy.
We were happy to hear that your fishing trip was a success and we hope that you will return to our Elk River Retreat in the future.
We regret that there was an issue with the hot water on your first night. It is understandable that one would be unhappy about not enjoying a nice hot shower after being on the river all day in November! We found the problem and have fixed it.~ Hopefully our offer to refund some money to you will help compensate for this disappointment.
We understand that we now live in a world where people are used to ready communication. Our vrbo site does notify guests, that at this time, wi-fi is not available at our retreat. This is due to it being located 7 miles up river from 101. However, we have researched this and found a new company that looks to be available for next year! .. Cell service is iffy depending on ones provider.
We do have several guests who return yearly to the Elk River in spite of the communication challenges. But, I imagine, they will appreciate the wi-fi once it is available. It is our desire to make the experience in the beautiful wilderness area of the Elk River a satisfying one ~available to all.
What a nice getaway home on the river.
Kitchen with all the amenities.
This is a great place for a family or friend gathering.
This is a great hidden gem on the Oregon coast. Far enough inland to keep you warm, near enough to the coast to keep you cool. Pets, kids welcome. Could sleep 3 families easy. If you ride bikes, bring your road bike. Each ride from the house features a tailwind going uphill and and a nice downhill section. Elk River is actually a scenic bikeway with little to no traffic. World class fishing and golf nearby. House is fully stocked for cooking and laundry. Its an easy 10 min drive into Port Orford for supplies. But the best part is the deck and direct access to the river. My kids played in the water all day. In the summer, the water is high enough inner tube but shallow enough in most spaces to wade knee deep. Full of critters, salamanders, frogs, crawfish, beavers and even an otter up river 50 yds or so. Owners are really nice and accommodating. Been here twice already so shhhhh, don't tell anyone ;)
Nice place, lots of room/beds, I'll be back if I need a place for 4 people or more
Clean, and just right for a fishing trip for 4 or more.
No cable/dish, tv, wifi internet or we could not find it. Also be aware that there is no cell service in this area. All of this is not really a big deal, because we were fishing, so who cares about being connected!
Everything was just like in the pictures on the net.
Had a great time!!!!
Great home! Great location!
This is the second time I have rented this home and have loved both experiences. It is right on the Elk River and close to amazing swimming. It is kid friendly so my son and nieces and nephews love it but it also gives me a chance for privacy in the master suite. It has all the amenities that I have ever needed. I will definitely rent here again.
small family reunion
This is a great place on the river for families. Plenty of space for everyone to be together or alone. The deck is accessible to those with mobility issues. Plenty of space for cooks to feed the crowd. Lots of beds tucked in nooks so there is a bit of privacy. Even tubes for playing in the river!
The only drawback is the lack of any kind of phone service.
The Elk River is a Wilderness area and Fall and Spring are noted for fabulous fishing on the pristine Elk River. A serine spot as well, since only drift boats are allowed! The Fish Hatchery is a short walk from our riverhouse where boats can be launched and fish can be viewed.
Salmon spawning is happening there late Fall and is a great chance to view large fish as they return to the hatchery. Early June the hatchery hosts free fishing for children up to the age of 10. Three miles up from our riverhouse, the Elk River is spectacular after the rains have replentished it. It is aqua-marine in color~ an incredible sight up the canyon! And there are numerous waterfalls as well!
Cape Blanco Lighthouse is just 15 minutes away and offers an awesome view of the Pacific ocean plus interesting facts about the history of the lighthouse.
Port Orford marina offers a possible glimps at migrating whales in Spring and sealions throughout the year too! And always a view of the picturesque Oregon coastline!
The Animal Park, where one can actually touch wild animals! is just a 20 minute drive north.
Golf at Bandon Crossings is just beyond the Animal Park and Banon Dunes is a 40 minute drive along tree lined 101.
Shore Acres Botanical Gardens are located 1 1/2 hours to the north out of Charlston harbor. Thousands of lights during the Christmas season create a fantasy land as they glow in the night. The shoreline there is very interesting as well as the history of the Simpson family who originally owned the gardens.
South 30 minutes, at Rogue River, there are exhillarating jet boat rides up that beautiful river. Continuing south along a magnificent coastline you will arrive to the Giant Redwood Forest. This drive takes about 3 hours, but if you have the time to venture out, it is an awesome sight.
